Customer engagement is increasingly key with the benefits of ‘big data’ providing detailed analytics for campaigns. Media planning is becoming more scientific and measurable, moving customers up the loyalty ladder to generate content for brands. Advertising is the catalyst to delivering integrated campaigns and Southampton Solent’s MA Advertising and Multimedia Communications programme prepares students for making a strategic contribution.

Recognising the close relationship with marketing and public relations, the course focuses on emerging forms of advertising which blur the boundaries with journalism and the importance of content marketing. Teaching is delivered by a team of industry professionals and the course covers the development of contemporary integrated marketing campaigns.

As the roles of multimedia advertising management, digital newsroom manager, marketing professional, and corporate PR manager are converging, students are encouraged to develop a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, and will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience by preparing campaigns for live client briefs. Students are also encouraged to seek work-placement and freelance opportunities through the University’s student run agency, Solent Creatives, as well as prepare competition briefs for the Design & Art Directors Association (D&AD) and the Young Creative Network (YCN).

What you will study

Year one

Advertising in a World of Converging Communication (30 credits)

This unit covers contemporary advertising practice and theory combining traditional mass media approaches with emerging social media and mobile channels. This unit develops practical skills and a critical awareness of the issues and practices within advertising in a world where increasingly the target audience can skip ads and brands combine paid, owned, earned and shared media to engage consumers. After introducing advertising principles, the unit moves on to explore the digital mix, content marketing, native advertising and immersive, augmented experiences. The traditional advertising roles of art director, copywriter, account manager and media planner are still important industry pathways but are increasingly challenged by agile practice, this unit considers the implications. Assessments are designed to test application of your learning in both theory and practice. 

Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits)

Students get the practical opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)

This unit introduces students to the challenge of measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement)

Research Methods (15 credits)

This unit raises the students’ research skills to Master’s level, including SPSS and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest (Shared Unit)

Professional Practice (30 credits)

This unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a PDP, which forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project- and informs the student’s choice of Major Project or dissertation

Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

The culmination of the MA degree, where the theory and practice learned in the previous units informs the student’s principal learning outcome- a campaign that demonstrates their professional attainment or a dissertation that critically examines a crucial industry issue, generating original thinking. Both project and dissertation require primary research to a master’s level.

The course is taught by industry experts who have established practitioner careers and who have strong links within the industry. Students have the opportunity to work on live client briefs and are encouraged to gain a work placement or freelance project.

Past students on the University’s creative advertising courses have benefitted from visits to London-based advertising and creative agencies.

Students who are in work while taking the course have the opportunity to adapt the topic of their assignments in several units to suit the needs of their employers.

Placements

The Professional Practice unit requires students to undertake a work placement or complete a freelance project. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The minimum requirement for a placement is two weeks, however placements and projects can vary in length, depending on client needs.

Solent’s fashion and beauty programmes have strong links with industry, giving students the chance to work with experienced academics and industry professionals. Students can leverage these industry links when they are looking for work placements as part of the essential work-based learning unit.

Students also benefit from a programme of guest lectures throughout the course, with representatives from fashion, beauty, media, retail and other creative industries coming to campus and sharing their experiences. Research Methods

The research methods unit prepares students for their MA final project by equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to define a research project, select an appropriate methodological approach and investigate a key research topic utilising secondary and/or primary research.

Professional Practice

This unit will explore and critically analyse the fashion, beauty and creative industries around the world. The unit will equip students with advanced skills to enable them to research the industry they seek to work in and to critically analyse opportunities. Students will be supported to produce a professional development plan - key to this will be an element of work-based learning.

Concept Development

The primary focus of this unit is on developing the wide range of conceptual skills necessary to effectively and innovatively communicate to a consumer audience. This unit provides the opportunity to develop, in response to a range of set briefs, concepts for different outcomes (for example digital, film, print and fashion shows).

Technical Image Design Skills 

This unit covers the technical aspects of creative and art direction. Using a range of software students will focus on understanding technical specifications and design problems aligned to producing web, print and time based outcomes.

Masters Project

In this unit students will design, execute and present an individually demanding piece of work that deploys a systematic and in-depth understanding of the skills and debates relevant to their particular discipline of study.

The course structure is theory and practice based. Southampton Solent’s media academy offers a comprehensive media loans scheme, giving students free access to a range of modern filmmaking equipment including high-definition (HD) video cameras and DSLR full-frame cameras. Students are also able to access a wide range of top-quality lenses and lighting kits. Investment into 4K technology has already begun, giving students access to the latest professional standards. The media academy is also home to three green-screen studios, a large visual recording studio with capacity for 200 seated audience members and a range of industry standard post-production facilities.

The growing scale and significance of sports ‘mega events’ means there is an increased requirement for those working within the industry to understand the impact of the expenditure of public and private resources on connected developments in infrastructure, architecture, transport and tourism.

A key element of the course curriculum is the research paper, and you’ll be supported in developing your understanding of the postgraduate research process, as well as the theoretical and procedural requirements of critical investigation. A number of Solent’s undergraduate media technology programmes are Skillset-approved, allowing access to a range of industry events, such as the RTS Masterclasses at the BFI in London. Close links with the Royal Television Society locally ensure students are able to attend their events, including ‘Meet the Professionals’.

Placements

Although work experience is not compulsory, you’ll be encouraged and supported to seek relevant placements wherever possible.

At Solent, we have a very strong focus on employability and work experience. Our extensive relationships with professional film and television editors, sound designers, colourists has meant that we have been able to offer unique placement and mentoring opportunities.

You’ll also have the opportunity to access some of the best work experience opportunities imaginable. We are the official university partner to the Glastonbury Festival and you will have the chance apply to work there. Likewise, our links with Bestival, Camp Bestival and Boardmasters mean you have great opportunities throughout the summer. We have close ties with some of the country’s top post-production houses and have been able to offer work experience opportunities with companies such as Envy, Halo and The Mill. Our alumni also offer work experience opportunities to current students.

Southampton Solent’s MA PR & Multimedia Communications programme is designed to help graduates build on traditional paradigms of public relations, exploring critically how the PR industry relates to advertising, marketing and journalism.

With an emphasis on the emergence of ‘peer-to-peer’ communications on digital platforms, this course can help improve the employability of both recent graduates and existing practitioners.

The ‘Professional Development’ unit gives students work-placement and freelance opportunities, enhancing their professional skillset. Students will also be able to pitch for paid work at Solent Creatives, who specialise in connecting students with businesses who need creative support. These projects can help students to strengthen their portfolio of professional work. For full details of each individual unit, please see the ‘course content’ tab.

Learners are encouraged to carry out additional work experience alongside their regular studies. The course team’s close links with industry have helped past students to negotiate placements at top local and national agencies.

The course concludes with a major project or dissertation. This is another opportunity for students to specialise their knowledge, conducting in-depth research into an area that complements their unique career ambitions.

What does this course lead to?

As the roles of digital newsroom manager, multimedia advertiser, marketing professional, and corporate PR continue to converge, it is increasingly important that students gain first-hand experience of these functions. With opportunities for networking, live client briefs and portfolio development all built into the course, graduates leave Southampton Solent with a wealth of industry relevant experience to show potential employers. 

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at graduates in a PR or communications-related discipline. The course content is well-suited to graduates who wish to build upon their existing knowledge and explore new and emerging communications channels. 

What you will study

Year one

PR in a Multimedia World (30 credits) 

This unit covers how the theory and practice of PR changes as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shifts from traditional PR approaches are considered in the context of actual PR campaigns currently running.

Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits) 

Students get the opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)

This unit introduces students to the measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement).

Research Methods (15 credits) 

This unit raises the students’ research skills to master’s level and includes SPSS software and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest. This is a shared unit.

Professional Practice (30 credits)

This unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a personal practice programme. This forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project and informs the student’s choice of dissertation topic.

Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

The culmination of this MA programme. Theory and practice learned in the previous units inform a final research project.

Facilities

We have a fully equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

Southampton Solent is proud to offer students a range of high-end media facilities. Students also have the opportunity to access an extensive media loans service, where they can borrow high-end video production and photography equipment.

Industry links

Live client briefs are used for the ‘Multimedia Campaign’ unit. The ‘Professional Practice’ unit requires every student to undertake a work placement or freelance project. Students who are in work while taking the course have the opportunity to adapt the topic of their assignments to suit the needs of their employers. Adaptable units include:

There is a strong relationship between the course and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, as evidenced by the participation of the CIPR Presidents in our eBook in a day events. These events have been organised by the MA students for the past two years.

Students benefit from a range of guest speakers and practical events including a crisis simulation, an ‘eCampaign’ in a day, and participation in industry events. 

Placements

Work placements and freelance projects are a core part of the curriculum, helping to ensure that students graduate with a range of relevant workplace experience. 

Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The course team will be available to provide support and guidance as necessary.

The placements and projects vary in length, depending on client needs. The minimum required is a two week placement, but on average the client projects last much longer.
