-Master of Arts in International Business by ARU Cambridge

This programme is designed for students with a wide interest in international business and management, who are aiming at a management position. All subjects and modules are placed in an international context. The demands placed upon the manager are subject to increasing changes, which arise from the changes that take place in the international business environment and usually effects all business operations.

The Master in International Business and Management programme is a 17 month full-time postgraduate programme for graduates of business-related disciplines, e.g. economics or management studies. The programme challenges students to apply business management theory to current international business practice. It prepares graduates for international management positions by focusing on corporate strategy, marketing, operations, accounting and human resource management, all from an international business perspective.

Educational concept

Our educational concept is characterized by small group sizes, and intensive contact between students and staff. Next to lectures and workshops, students work in teams as well as individually on practice-based and experience-based projects and case studies. Students interact with the world of practice through guest lectures by entrepreneurs, senior business executives and knowledge experts, seminars and company visits. Our teaching staff is selected to ensure a interesting mixture of business experience and expertise in applied research. Throughout the programme the integration between different knowledge areas is strongly emphasized. The full programme is taught in English.

The programme consists of two semesters of course work and one semester of applied research in a business context within a period of 17 months, starting in September and ending in January. The total size of the programme is 90 ECTS. You may opt to participate in a double degree programme, in which case you get the opportunity to spend the second semester at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, England.

Course Overview

The MIBM programme consists of three semesters in which a wide variety of courses are taught.

Semester One

The first semester begins with an intensive introduction programme. You take part in a variety of activities and do exercises to enhance group cohesion and personal effectiveness. Of course you will also get an introduction to the city of Groningen, Hanze UAS and its facilities and services, the MIBM programme and its staff. After the introduction, the following courses are offered:

Semester Two

In the second semester you deal with more complex, inter-related management issues. Acting as a boardroom member or manager of a company you develop creative solutions to complex problems in a dynamic international business environment. The following courses are included:

Semester Three

The third semester is focused on conducting applied research within a relevant business setting which is the basis for writing the master's thesis. Besides providing the essential knowledge of international business and management during the first two semesters, students are required to select a topic and a business setting for their Master thesis already during the first semester, and further develop their thesis proposal during the second semester. The Master in International Communication (MIC) is an ambitious double degree programme for those who aspire to an international career as a communication practitioner in senior managerial or consultancy positions, responsible for the external and internal communication of an organisation.

Four universities across Europe, all specialising in communication and public relations in international professional contexts, have joined forces to create this unique joint programme offering you the full benefit of their collective expertise and international networks. This consortium consists of:

• The Netherlands: Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen
• The United Kingdom: Leeds Beckett University
• Italy: IULM University, Milan
• Lithuania: Vilnius University

The MIC offers you the opportunity to study at two universities and graduate with two Master’s degrees and the Geert Hofstede Consortium certificate. The programme starts each September and consists of three semesters (90 European credits). During the first semester you will study at one of the consortium universities, and for your second semester you will study at one of the other consortium universities. During the third semester, you will write your dissertation under the supervision of these two universities.

Career Focused

How is the career perspective built into the MIC programme? Throughout your study, you will analyse and solve real corporate communication problems provided by companies and governmental and non-governmental organisations. While acquiring the necessary expertise, you will at the same time acquire the knowledge and skills you need to be able to work within an international, complex and ever-changing business context. In doing so, you will not only be achieving an academic milestone, you will also be building your business network and complementing your résumé with work experiences.

MIC Curriculum Overview

Semester 1: Core Programme (30 European credits)
The first semester introduces you to the full breadth of the profession. What are the roles and responsibilities of the communication professional in an organisation from a strategic perspective? Which main functional areas are there? How does culture influence communication? What is the relationship between the organisation and its international and intercultural environment? You will complete this semester at one of the consortium universities of your choice.

Semester 2: Specialisations (30 European credits)
During the second semester you will complete a number of specialisations from another consortium universities of your choice. The specialisations are, by definition, in tune with what is happening in the professional field and can change according. The specialisations include:

Semester 3: The Graduation Project (30 European credits)
The graduation Project consists of a master’s dissertation and a personal development portfolio. You must demonstrate mastery of those competences required to obtain the title Master in International Communication. You will choose a professional role and analytically solve a problem for an outside client or stakeholders (working in-house or as a consultant). The result of this project will be based on applied research and the use of an appropriate methodology. Every problem requires a solution from an international or intercultural perspective. The dissertation is completed under the supervision of two universities.

MIC graduate profile

As a graduate of the Master in International Communication you will be an interculturally competent communication professional able to work in a global context. You will be able to anticipate changes and develop, implement and manage sustainable and innovative solutions to communication issues. As a graduate, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to work at managerial or consultancy level.

Career Prospects

Based on the MIC Alumni Evaluation conducted in 2015, 91.6% of the MIC graduates have found a job within a year after graduating. Graduates have found jobs as Communications manager, Communications consultant, Director of communication and external relations, Image and communications manager, Marketing & communications executive, Content and media manager, Social media research officer, Senior international relations officer, Events officer and Project manager. Companies where our graduates have found positions include Google, Edelman PR, Ogilvy Group, Walt Disney, Hewlett Packard, IBM, ABN-Amro bank and governmental institutions.

Admission requirements

• Previous study in one of the following fields: communication, humanities, social sciences, business, management. Extensive work experience may also be considered.
• English language requirements: IELTS: 6.5, no subscores below 5.5 or TOEFL: 90 (internet). IELTS or TOEFL must not be older than two years.

Artists doing strange things with technology. This sums up our MADtech Programme. To imagine, interpret and change human interaction with a transforming world you will use and artistically explore different technologies. You will do so with a tinker mentality: play and experimentation are important aspects in your development and will carry a special emphasis on the research you do. This mentality, combined with a critical reflective attitude and conceptual skills, will lead to unexpected perspectives, resulting in multimedia artistic work.

The Frank Mohr Institute at the Minerva Art Academy offers two international Masters of Arts:

-MA MADtech (Media, Art, Design & Technology)*, each consisting of a two-year curriculum.


Past, present and future

At MA MADtech we are constantly searching for the dialogue between different viewpoints from the past, present and future: between art and science, laboratory and applied research, stable and unstable media, old and new technology, local and global forms of society. As your art engages with the world, you will grow as an individual as well as in your artistic profession, reinforcing the power of your imagination and exploring your own connection to a transforming, technologically charged society.

Art & Research

MADtech is all about combining art and technology, creating hybrid forms of art, using traditional as well as brand new, unexpected means, content and media. Experimentation, tinkering and playing are vital methods for developing your work, backed up by thorough reflection. Artistic technology research is therefore a major part of the master programme. You will take part in collaborative artistic research projects, exploring the possibilities and limitations of transdisciplinary and transmedial situations in contemporary culture. This will help you to understand the links between aesthetics, technology, materiality, thinking and politics.

Enriching your work and ideas

You enter this programme with your own research topic. You will develop and refine these ideas during your first year, enriching your ideas through the knowledge and skills that you will gain, the experiments that you will carry out and the collaboration that you'll encounter. The second year is almost entirely devoted to your graduation work and artistic research, leading to your master thesis. During your time with us you will be part of a community where education, research and the artistic practice meet and reinforce each other.

Hybrid Arts Lab

For most of your work, research and lectures you will go to our building on the Praediniussingel. There you will find our Hybrid Arts Lab, also called HAL 24/7.
It includes an artistic technology research lab, seminar, project, lecture and exhibition rooms, media and photography studios, common workplaces, common kitchen and individual studios. You also have access to your studio 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At HAL we provide plenty of facilities, which you can use, technologically and otherwise as well as sufficient technical support. If you require more complex, technological facilities, you are welcome to make use of the Hanze facilities at the Institute of Engineering in Assen.

Expert meetings, artist's talks and exhibitions

You can attend interesting expert meetings, artist's talks and exhibitions, for instance by lectors of the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society. During the 'Energize Festival' an international workshop called 'Recycling Electronics' took place here. Another interesting example is the expert meeting concerning photography research in cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural artistic practices, which involved current students and alumni. Every year, the course Research & Development/New Media Art Practices organises different collaborative projects and workshops, for example, with CREW Immersive Media and Blast Theory.

Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society

The Art & Society research centre of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen covers the practice based research of Minerva Art Academy. The Art & Society research centre consists of three research groups: Lifelong Learning in Music, Image in Context and Popular Culture, and Sustainability & Innovation.

To help you to reinforce your artistic profession you will visit relevant institutions, centres of expertise and art fairs. This way you will meet a broad range of people from the professional field so that you can build your own network of useful and inspirational contacts. In addition, you will work within an open, cross-media network of artists, technologists and scientists to develop your entrepreneurial attitude, realise your ideas, sharpen your vision and share your questions and solutions. What is just as important, is your artist attitude. We expect you to think and act like an investigative artist in an international practice, bringing together different perspectives in exciting work and projects. As such, we will help you to master these organisational skills, to raise funds, organise support and promote projects to the public.

To allow you to meet the right people and work with the technology you need for your projects, we have strong ties to a number of institutions and organisations. Like our Art & Society Research Centre, which covers the practice based research of the Minerva Art Academy and consists of three research groups: Lifelong Learning in Music, Image in Context and Popular Culture, and Sustainability & Innovation. Through these partners you will be able to get in touch with researchers of the University of Groningen.

Working with the University of Groningen

We also work closely with the University of Groningen, where you can attend lectures. Furthermore, we have contacts with different university researchers working at an expert level, for instance in the field of cultural geography. Depending on the nature of your artistic project, we will also help you to meet new partners. In addition, we organise international trips and visits to relevant biennials and triennials, cultural institutions and exhibitions in order to broaden your perspective. This includes a trip to New York in your second year.

Experimental art spaces

As a master student you can take part in exhibitions and projects of several of our partners. We collaborate with NP3 for instance, one of the experimental art spaces in Groningen for projects and exhibitions, with three totally different locations. We also work with Sign, a gallery that focuses on interdisciplinary, experimental and contemporary art, with the Visual Arts Centre in Groningen, Assen and Emmen and with the PeerGrouP in Donderen. Another partner is the Institute for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam.

Room for debate around art

During this master programme we encourage you to show your work and present your findings in a public debate. This allows you to enter into a dialogue with society concerning your artistic position; transforming the way people experience art, shaking them up, responding to their reactions and allowing others to influence your view of art. It is therefore not only the final result of your work that counts, but the process you go through to get there.

To show the world what you are doing, you are invited to join projects and take part in national and international projects and exhibitions. In the past our students have taken part in our own Energize Festival and the International Student Triennial Istanbul, for instance. We also participate in exhibitions and projects with Forum Images and other cultural institutions. During our Open Days Show you can show your work and get the possibility to work with a professional curator.
