The course will develop your understanding of the practice and management of the creative and cultural industries, as well as the political, economic and cultural contexts in which these industries operate. You'll develop your skills and critical understanding of the cultural and creative media sector, and the management of cultural organisations in a wide variety of contexts including drama, creative writing, visual arts curation, festival and theatre management. You'll also have hands-on experience of producing or managing a project.

If you want to develop your career in arts, media and cultural organisations then this course is for you. In addition to being taught by a highly experienced and qualified team you will also benefit greatly from the internship element of the course. This mix of practical experience, combined with academic rigour will provide you with a set of applied and transferable skills - critical analysis, problem solving, and research techniques – as well as specific knowledge related to the International cultural and media sector.

Timetable

Year 1 class contact time is typically 8 hours per week plus individual tutorial plus independent study.

Teaching and learning

The course offers one-to-one supervisions in three modules.There are regular additional support events, such as visits to galleries and performance viewings. The course now boasts a new shared production office, which allows to you to work on projects collaboratively in an environment similar to that which you could expect after graduation.

Placements

The course offers you the opportunity to take part in significant work experience placements in London, the UK or possibly abroad. Both the preparation for the placement, which we guide you through, and the placement itself are assessed modules as part of the course. Our positioning in Central London, and our developed industry links means that we are exceptionally placed for students taking part on the placements.

Working with an individual experienced mentor on a project is also an alternative to the traditional placement.

Past placements include: Royal National Theatre Archive, Golley Slater Marketing, Saatchi Gallery.

The MA will be delivered in partnership with major London cultural institutions, including the Lyric Hammersmith, where you'll take part in a low-residency intensive program of work at their impressive facilities.

The course is offered through a low residency model that makes it unique in the country, and particularly attractive if you wish to further your studies and enhance your career opportunities but cannot commit to a traditional full-time offering.

Methods of assessment are both practical and written. They reflect professional working methods (e.g. a professional performance outcomes) as well as critical responses to the course content (e.g. through essays, reflective journals and research projects).

Teaching and learning

The low residency MA in Contemporary Performance Making is following the model based on the Visitors and Residents theory by David White (2015), which describes a continuum of modes of online engagement and learning. This has proven to be a useful way towards understanding individuals’ motivations when they use the web in differing contexts. We are proposing that no mode of engagement is better than another, so we offer a blended approach that includes intensive face to face residencies, alongside online meetings and content delivery. We want to acknowledge that in today’s fast-changing world it is important to employ different modes of learning that allow for flexibility and can support individual learners’ context, circumstances and preferences.

The innovative low residency model, which is currently unlike any other offerings in the UK within the field of Drama and Performance, entails short intensive practical modules, masterclasses and workshops led by industry professionals during the residency weeks, alongside theoretical and critical e-learning and blended learning modules that run throughout the year.

The collaborative aspect of this programme makes it unique in the market and particularly attractive to those who wish to expand their professional networks and diversify their techniques.

Between the intensive residencies you'll maintain contact with the University through monthly supervisory meetings with your personal adviser (either face to face or online), and through completing the online and blended learning modules.

A dedicated performance and rehearsal space with a 90-seat capacity that can be set up in numerous configurations. The main auditorium, 30-seat studio and backstage facilities are used by drama, performance and technical theatre students. Facilities are available for commercial hire.

MA Development Journalism is an interdisciplinary course offered jointly by LSBU’s School of Arts and Creative Industries and School of Law and Social Sciences. It brings together our established expertise in Development Studies with our industry-informed provision in journalism education.

Development issues such as migration, poverty, the environment, aid and governance are increasingly relevant in journalism, and this course develops a theoretical understanding of these issues alongside practical journalism skills.

The course also provides you with a solid grounding in key theories, concepts and debates around development and contemporary development journalism. It offers hands-on practical professional training in broadcast and podcast radio journalism, equipping you with skills in audio production, interview techniques, editing, mixing and ‘live’ studio operation.

Good quality housing is one of the most basic necessities in producing thriving communities and ensuring the health and wellbeing of individuals, so the job market around housing provides plenty of opportunities to graduates.

The Masters element requires the submission of a 20,000 word dissertation in the third year.

The first year concentrates on housing policy and the changing role of the housing professional. You'll examine housing and planning issues, and running the social business.

Teaching and learning

All students take part in a field trip in the second year to the Netherlands to help relate theory to practice. You'll visit Dutch housing organisations and local government, and on your return develop a comparative case study for the assessment.

Teaching is delivered through seminars, lectures and workshops. The course makes full of our blended learning platform, Moodle. Online tutorials will be made available, allowing you to enhance your skills in self-managing your studies. This supports the more traditional teaching methods.

The full Masters course is accredited as fulfilling the academic requirements for the Chartered Institute of Housing professional qualification. Our students can register as student members and go on to become full members after completion of the Institutes' professional experience requirements. Students applying for full membership of the CIH must have work experience in a housing related field. This is included in the course fees.

We explore the role of planning as a set of regulatory mechanisms but more importantly as a means of identifying opportunities and assisting developers (be they in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors).

We have been running professionally accredited planning education courses at LSBU successfully for over 40 years (50 in 2018).

This MA is aimed at graduates from a variety of disciplines who are looking to pursue a worthwhile and challenging course that can lead to an exciting and stable career in spatial planning and related fields.

The qualification is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute, which means you can become a licentiate member on graduation. With two years' relevant work experience (in some cases one year) you can apply to take the RTPI Assessment of Professional Competence and become a full member. Students will get free RTPI membership and RTPI bursaries (subject to availability).

The qualification includes a compulsory one week residential European field study visit. In recent years students have visited Barcelona. Venice or Dortmund. For all new entrants, field study visit fees are included in the tuition fees. Our one-day and week-long residential visits include presentations and Q&A with practitioners in London, the UK and beyond.

This is both an academic and a professional qualification with all successful graduates are eligible for registration as professional social workers with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Founded on holistic, service user-centred model of care, the course produces creative, innovative and reflective social work professionals committed to working in partnership to promote well-being and make a real difference.

On MA Social Work practice-based learning complements university-based lectures, seminars and workshops, drawing on established, contemporary and innovative approaches to work with a diverse range of service users. The course is underpinned by a commitment to inter-professionalism, service-user and carer empowerment and involvement, anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory values and evidence based practice. The course adopts a systematic approach to the development and assessment of your social work skills and includes a specific programme of social work development.

There are five core areas of knowledge and understanding relevant to social work:

• Social work services and the needs of service users
• The service delivery context
• Values and ethics
• Social work theory
• The nature of social work practice.

These areas are systematically explored throughout the course in relation to the key roles of social work, which include:

• Assessment
• Intervention
• Support
• Managing risk
• Managing your own practice
• Demonstrating professional competence.

Employment based route

It is also possible to study the MA Social Care on an employment based route (EBR). Candidates need to be sponsored and supported by their employing agency to undertake this. It is taught alongside the existing MA Social Work and the structure is the same, but students have the option of doing the dissertation in a third year and completing their qualification over a three year period.

Timetable

On the full-time course you will attend the University generally one day per week and the remainder will be on placement.

You will undertake a 70 day placement in year one and a 100 day placement in year 2.

This course has been developed in partnership with local authority and voluntary sector partners, with input from a wide range of service users and carers. We work in partnership with a number of London local authorities, and other organisations on both the public and private sector, who contribute to planning the programme, to learning and teaching, and to the provision of practice learning opportunities. The MA Social Work is both an academic and professional qualification and is approved by The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is the regulator of health, Psychological and Social professionals.

Social work as a career

You will normally specialise in a certain group of society, such as children. Much of the work is around helping decide the level of support or protection required, responding to requests for help and working with other agencies and professionals for the best outcomes. Most opportunities are with local authorities, where salaries can vary substantially between regions - you are likely to earn more working in London. However there are also opportunities available at private care homes, charities and NHS Trusts.

A patient, non-judgemental mind-set is needed, with the ability to communicate effectively with a host of different people and gain their trust. The work demands a level of resilience and a genuine desire to help people, as some cases may be disturbing, and some people won't want your help.

It is a broad area of work that can require many different skills and others the option of specialisation – be it protecting the historical environment or urban design.

PgDip/MA Town Planning programmes are accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute. The courses enhance student's employability in planning, property development and research roles in the public and private sectors. This is through focusing not only on the planning system but on broader themes that influence the economic, environmental and social contexts in which we live.

The course enables you to study an area of spatial planning in some depth as many of modules are within a specialist area (urban design, urban regeneration or environmental planning).

Residential

It includes a compulsory one week residential European field study visit, recent destinations have been Venice and Germany. For all new entrants field study visit fees are included in the tuition fees.

Town Planning PgDip

You can also choose to study the PgDip for six modules; Full-time (10 months) or part-time (15 months).

Study hours

Year one class contact time for full-time students is typically 9 hours per week supplemented by study visits, tutorials and independent study.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by a range of coursework, design and practice-based projects, presentations and a dissertation. There are no exams on this programme.

Town Planner as a career

Currently there is a national shortage of qualified town and environmental planners in the UK so the demand for our postgraduate courses is particularly high.

The natural career path for graduates is to work as a town planner – this can be for a local authority, as private consultants or for planning government agencies.

Role and responsibilities:

General activities for town planners range from developing creative and original planning solutions to satisfy all parties, to writing often complex reports which make recommendations or explain detailed regulations, to conducting research and analysis to help determine strategic developments.

Most jobs will be largely office-based, but visits to meet clients and attend external meetings are not uncommon. There are opportunities available throughout the country, as every local authority employs planners.

Career progression

Graduates from the programme will emerge with a range of knowledge and skills of value to potential employers and to career progression opportunities. Employment prospects are excellent with demand exceeding supply. Successful planning students are likely to find jobs with local authorities, private consultants in property and planning government agencies.

Government advises that good planning and good design are inseparable; this course focuses on urban design as a part of town planning. Our approach to urban design emphasises the continuing nature of planning responsibilities (as opposed to the contractual nature of most design professions) and focuses on the everyday use of places and spaces.

Site project work

Initial modules contextualise ideas of urban design and its evolution. The core of the course is project work on sites where there are current urban design issues and we have established links with the planning authority or a client. We have worked on the hinterland of Bankside, Great Yarmouth Sea Front, and Central Hackney.

Field trip

The Field Trip module (a compulsory part of the MA and PgDip) prepares you for work in unfamiliar places. Field trips offer our students a unique learning experience. We think of the trips as visits to living laboratories where you'll learn through active, hands-on experience. Beyond your studies, you'll also have the opportunity to develop and enhance their self-confidence and leadership skills. Recent field trips have involved postgraduate planning students visiting Barcelona, Spain; Ruhr Valley, Germany; and Venice, Italy. For all new entrants the field study visit fees are included in the tuition fees.

Dissertation

The dissertation is a research-based urban design project which engages with critical thinking, such as Chris Jones' concept of urban design as 'bringing about change in a man-made world'.
