The School of Arts offers a Masters programme in performance creation that draws upon the vast resources of London and the facilities and expertise of Brunel. This innovative MA will provide you with the space to nurture your creativity through the practical and critical exploration of contemporary multi-media performance. The programme offers a combination of critical engagement and practice-based research.

The aim of the programme is to provide a bridge between academia and the professional world, giving you the opportunities to network and engage in a variety of supervised and self-managed projects.

You will undertake a programme of study under the auspices of Drama at Brunel, which is well known for its innovative approach to contemporary performance study and practice. The learning environment encourages independent thought, creativity and craftsmanship through workshops, seminars, lectures, self-directed exercises, tutorials and practical master classes. Many of Brunel’s lecturers and guest artists have international reputations in performance and direction including Helen Paris (acclaimed performance artist and director of curious performance company) and Fiona Templeton (playwright, author and theatre company founder).

We offer specialisation in directing, solo performance and performance writing and there are opportunities for professional work placements/apprenticeships that allow you to develop your own project work under professional circumstances. Students benefit from opportunities to showcase their final pieces – including solo performances and directed projects – in professional venues such as Battersea Arts Centre. These performances help to launch their entry into the professional arena.

Brunel’s proximity to the diverse performance and theatre environment of London allows for direct contact with the work of established as well as cutting edge professionals working in the industry. The programme offers you the opportunity to develop skills, increase employment possibilities and build up a network of professional contacts.

Programme Content
The MA programme has a flexible modular structure designed to accommodate both full time (30-40 study hours per week) and part-time students (15-20 study hours per week). All students will undertake four core modules and a practical project or, if preferred, a written dissertation.

Modules
The modules available are likely to include:
·Specialist options
This module runs in term one as a practical workshop and rehearsal. Students will normally elect one of three specialist perspectives - Performance Directing, Solo Performance or Performance Writing. However, students could choose to explore more than one option, but will be required to choose one option only for their final Performance Project or Written Dissertation. Students will produce two practical pieces (10-15 minutes duration, one focusing on the performer and one on mise-en-scene) together with documentation of their work.
·Approaches to Performance/Mise-en-scene Making
This module addresses the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary performance. It will give close attention to the multiplicity and diversity of approaches to performance making used over the last 100 years at an advanced level.
·Professional Placement
This module runs in the second term. In the first five-six weeks of the module students will attend lectures and workshops on professional development with staff and guest lectures/leading experts in the field. In the second part of the module, students will undertake a placement/apprenticeship (minimum three weeks/90 hours) with an established partner organisation, such as a national or international theatre company, festival organisation, or university with whom we will sign a Learning Contract. We have MA students on placements in London, the US, Canada, Romania and France.
·Research Methodologies
The aim of the module is to enhance the development of independent student thought and an understanding of interdisciplinary research methodologies in performance studies. This will be achieved through an engagement with abstract concepts and group discussions of advanced ideas and current trends in performance. In this way students will be encouraged to discuss and analyse their own and other’s approaches. This will also serve as a platform for students to test their ideas and present a series of short papers on selected topics.
·Performance Project/Dissertation
During the summer term you will work towards your practical performance project or, if preferred, dissertation. The performance project will take the form of a final presentation-performance (lasting approximately 50 minutes and including documentation with visual material and a written commentary) either in directing, performance writing or solo-performance. In the first part of term two there will be a set of intensive workshops where students will be working within their chosen specialist area with guest artists.

There are 2 x £1,500 bursaries/scholarships available for the next 2 years

Your application for a scholarship will be judged on your your written sample and your Statement of Need. If you do not have an appropriate written sample please answer the following question in 1,500 words "How do you see contemporary performance?".

The Novel in Society: Internship Programme
As far as we know, this course is unique to Brunel and highly popular with our students. You will study the publishing industry and the strategies adopted by successful authors within it, and will also learn how to build your profile as a writer and prepare a submission to a literary agent. After the taught course, we will place you as an intern within a company in this field to learn at first hand how and why a novel is published. Students should budget both time and funds for a two-week work placement in Central London.

Dissertation
You will be able to work one-to-one with your Dissertation Tutor to write a novel extract, novella or fiction collection of up to 40,000 words accompanied by a related critical commentary. Most students then continue to complete a full-length novel. The dissertation is designed to allow you to work with your tutor to create the optimum submission package for a literary agent.

The Curtis Brown Prize
Curtis Brown Ltd, one of Europe's oldest and largest literary and talent agencies, will endow £1,500 prize for the best student on this programme from 2008 onwards.

What is it that makes for a good game design and good gameplay? What cultural and social values do games carry in terms of their design and form? What types of theories and concepts might we use to help make games that engage and excite players?

This new and innovative masters programme will help you to answer such questions through intensive creative game-making as well as providing the opportunity for you to reflect in theoretically informed ways on your own creative practice and on your own experience of playing games. The programme is taught by game design professionals and theorists who have played significant roles in developing digital game studies as an academic discipline. It offers a unique opportunity for you to analyse in depth what constitutes good game design through a range of practical exercises and written papers. Whether you have experience of making game mods, are already working in the industry, or you are a games’ enthusiast without a technical background, this programme is designed to appeal to those with a desire to explore game design, the theories behind such designs and the place of games in culture.

This Master of Arts programme is designed for those with an interest in the design and cultural significance of digital games. Students will engage in, and experiment with, practical games creation, with workshops led by designers working in the industry, as well as exploring a range of theories and concepts with which to analyse the values of games, play and pleasure.

The programme will be delivered by a team of experienced games researchers, some of whom have played a pioneering role in making digital game studies a new academic discipline. You will engage with a range of game types and styles, from first person shooters to massively multiplayer role-playing games. This MA focuses on conceptual game design as opposed to software development/programming, unlike many MScs focused on interactive media. We take a back-to-basic-principles approach to game design, something often advocated by key industry figures looking for innovation in the field, which will allow you to gain a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of creating original, enjoyable and challenging games.

TYPICAL MODULES
Game Design I
Investigates the principles behind the rules and play of games. A detailed study of how games function to create experiences, including rule design, play, mechanics/structure, game balancing, social game interaction and the integration of textual strategies to create the gaming experience.

Critical Approaches
Explores the criticism and analysis of games. A detailed study and evaluation of the different methodological and theoretical approaches used in the study of games/videogames.

Game Design II
Building on work in Game Design I students will develop, individually, a design for a game for a particular platform (phone, PC, handheld, console etc). The game can be delivered in digital format for those with technical skills or as a storyboard, character profiles, visual ‘mood board’/style palette, sound-effects/music profiling. The project will demonstrate practical application of ideas explored in Critical Approaches.

Socio-Cultural Contexts
Provides theoretical frameworks used in the analysis of the relationships between games and social-cultural contexts. A detailed study of work conducted on the social-cultural implications of games from across a range of disciplines. There is a focused study of an existing MMoRPG (massively multiplayer on-line role-playing game).

Project
A dissertation of 15,000 – 20,000 words or 10,000 words with practical component delivered in either digital format or as a design document.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

The course is delivered over two long and intensive days per week, in the first two 12-week terms from September/October to December and from January to March. Part-time students are required to attend on one day per week, though are strongly advised to also attend the early-morning Teeline session on the second day also. We deliver this way to ensure students are allowed sufficient dedicated time for freelance work, weekly work placements and private study (including set journalism assignments). In Term Three, Teeline delivery continues, and students work on their major research project and also take their NCTJ preliminary exams in law, public affairs, shorthand and news-writing.

Term One

Journalistic Practice 1
This module will introduce the contextual models and practical tools and techniques of news journalism in all its forms – print, online and also writing for broadcast. Delivery includes Teeline shorthand, news values, news sources, writing intros, writing full stories, interview techniques, covering court, council, police, emergency services, human interest stories and much more. Assessments will be through news-writing targeted at a range of print and online outlets, plus a self-reflexive report. You will be encouraged to get your work published from the outset, and there will be plenty of input from real-world journalists.

Journalism in Context
A critical account of the various contexts in which journalism operates today, with particular focus on journalism law and local government , as well as the structure of the industry itself. You will work alongside real-world journalists as you put your knowledge into practice, attending court cases and local authority meetings. Assessment will be by two written assignments.

Term Two

Journalistic Practice 2
You will be able to follow either a broadcast or a print/online pathway. In either case, you will further develop your knowledge of the current journalistic environment and the multi-skills necessary to thrive within it, including Teeline shorthand, writing, interviewing, packaging and production for a range of different target audiences and lifestyle groups. Here, emphasis will be given to features and investigations, plus further news gathering, voice and presentation skills for broadcast journalists. Assessments will consist of a number of pieces of editorial work, plus a self-reflexive report.

Issues in Journalism
This module will concentrate on the analysis of the main contemporary issues in the journalistic field; for example, the role of journalism in the political process, ‘spin’, the impact of new technology on journalism, freedom of information, the impact on journalism of 9/11, and so on. You will further develop your knowledge of law gained in term one. The operations and institutions of central government will be explored through class-based and real-world reporting exercises. Assessments will be by two written assignments.

Term Three

NCTJ Preliminary Exams and the Major Research Project

You will produce either a 12,000 – 15,000 word dissertation or a combination of substantial practical journalism with a report.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
The programme is also innovative in its interdisciplinarity. Unlike other childhood studies programmes, which are almost exclusively located in a single department and taught from a single disciplinary perspective, the proposed programme allows you to select options modules that draw upon expertise and modules from a range of disciplinary traditions.

The programme is based in the School of Health Sciences and Social Care, with the core modules delivered primarily, but not exclusively, by members of the Human Geography Research Centre within that School. This Research Centre specialises in geographies of children and young people.

However, the MA programme also benefits from expertise within Brunel's Interdisciplinary Centre for Child and Youth Focused Research. This represents a concentration of over thirty academic staff from across the University whose research interests lie in the broad field of children and youth. Many of the Centre’s members conduct research with young people in the global South, from a range of disciplinary perspectives including geography, sociology, anthropology, psychology, health sciences, social work and sport sciences.

In both core and specialist option modules, students will be explicitly exposed to innovative high profile research that relates to the fields of children, youth and international development.

The programme combines four core taught modules (accounting for 90 credits) with 30 credits worth of options. The core modules focus on key issues relating to international development, children and youth, and in particular the rights and participation of young people. They also prepare students in research design and practice, in preparation for the dissertation. The option modules offer a unique opportunity to appreciate in depth how children and youth-related issues are addressed from alternative disciplinary perspectives.

The programme is intended to relate to the needs of organisations working in the field of children, youth and international development. Students will have the opportunity, should they wish, to undertake a sustained project with an external organisation as part of a placement module. This may be an organisation with which they already have links, such as a current of former employer. They may also choose to apply their 60 credit dissertation to the needs of an identified community or organisation.

A range of teaching and learning techniques are employed on the programme, most of which stress the active involvement of students in discussion and debate. The programme also emphasises reflective, independent learning, both by individuals and groups, and students are well supported to achieve this through, for instance, tutorials, workshops and seminar discussions.

Staff place a strong emphasis on tutorial support and regular tutorials are integrated into the programme. Tutorials focus on the development of study skills (critical reading and writing), careers support, exam and assignment preparation, feedback on assessments and help in developing research proposals.

Aims

The Master's in Teaching at Brunel University London:

-engages students in intellectually challenging research and experientially-based exploration of questions of teaching, learning and schools, while systematically developing their professional knowledge and understanding, and awareness of current problems and new insights;
-helps students to develop an informed, enquiring, self-sustaining approach to professional practice and to professional learning;
-equips students with the strategies necessary to identify, locate and critically evaluate relevant research and theoretical literature, and other forms of evidence that could usefully inform their practice;
-enables students to conduct worthwhile practitioner enquiries in their own professional setting, including research and development projects specifically intended to improve pupil outcomes;
-encourages students to work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals or stakeholders (including parents), engaging them in the processes of research and its findings
-helps students to develop a creative and constructively critical approach towards educational innovation.

Course Content

The Masters in Teaching at Brunel University London is designed for early career teachers who are interested in developing a research-informed, critical approach to the development of their practice. The focus is on the processes of teaching and learning and the programme is rooted in participants’ own school-based experience. It involves carrying out investigations in school, supported by appropriate reading, and attendance at three intensive conference days normally held on a Saturday at Brunel University London each year. Throughout the programme there is a strong emphasis on collaboration. The university’s Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard Learn) is used extensively to support the school-based tasks and to sustain critical discussion.

Year 1 - starts by focusing on pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning that can positively impact, and make a real difference to, pupils and schools.

Students will have some seminars together, and work in smaller groups with teachers from a range of subject areas or phases.

For example, the Responsive Teaching module provides a lens through which students critically explore a range of contemporary issues relating to educational provision and their own practice framed around five key themes: folk pedagogies; funds of knowledge; culturally responsive teaching; pupil voice; and, assessment for learning.

Year 2 - the programme begins by focusing on pupils, and then considers how teachers and schools can respond. Students will have some seminars together and work in either subject-specific groups or general groups.

For example, the Learners and Learning module provides a lens through which students critically explore a range of contemporary issues relating to educational provision and their own practice framed around four key themes: learning; designing learning/mediating a curriculum; assessment and motivation; and, schools, equity and achievement.

Year 3 - all students will undertake a Research and Development project which involves implementing a new strategy and reviewing its progress, while working with colleagues.

Core teaching for all students will be supported by work in supervision groups and action learning sets exploring the specific applications and implications of these key ideas in their curriculum areas.

All students are expected to contribute to an annual conference held for course participants by presenting ideas about effective research instruments and strategies to evaluate the efficiency of the teaching innovations they have introduced.

Today more than ever before national governments, international agencies and most major international corporations have an increasing need for staff with a strong grasp of intelligence and security issues who can also demonstrate first-rate skills of research and assessment.

Taught by the internationally respected scholars of the Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies, backed up where required by practitioner expertise, the MA in Intelligence and Security Studies offers a unique opportunity for practical, policy-oriented graduate study of intelligence issues. It will be of value to individuals seeking to go into security-oriented careers in both the private sectors, as well as to individuals engaged in the security professions who seek further qualifications and professional enhancement.

A distinctive feature of the course lies in its combining the rigorous study of intelligence and security policy studies with practical opportunities to develop intelligence skills through case studies and simulation exercises dealing with intelligence analysis.

Analytical Simulation Exercise - ASE is the jewel in the MA/ISS crown. It provides students with an opportunity to undertake a simulated intelligence analysis on a real-world subject. ASE is designed to emulate the interdepartmental assessment methods of the British Cabinet Office Joint Intelligence Committee, and gives students a chance to apply hands-on analytical principles and methods they have learned abstractly in the MA/ISS taught courses.

Dissertation: The final leg of the programme will be a supervised research dissertation of 15,000 - 20,000 words.


Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies:

Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies is Britain's first academic centre dedicated to intelligence scholarship and policy-analysis. It includes one of Britain's most innovative scholars in the field, Dr Philip H J Davies, as well as former CIA officer and noted scholar Dr. Stephen Marrin. Dr. Kristian Gustafson, an expert on Covert Action and military intelligence doctrine, is the current director of the programme. The former senior military imagery analyst, Geoff Oxlee, OBE, joined BCISS as an Honorary Fellow and completes the core team. Together, these scholars not only produce important original research, published world-wide, but actively contribute to the success of government and business in the UK.

The centre, though, is a an inter-disciplinary endeavour, and includes participation from some of the leading Brunel University academics in the fields of cryptography, computer networking, imagery, economics and even law. Many of these experts already assist our teaching. As well, the centre benefits from the assistance, from time to time, of various officials of Her Majesty’s Government. MA/ISS, therefore, benefits from practitioner input and insight as well as instruction by leading international academics.

This MA is designed to provide you with a training in classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theory. It provides you with a clinical grounding through its emphasis on the clinical writings of Freud, Klein and Lacan. Classic case studies, contemporary cases and case presentations by practising analysts are central to this course.

The MA also offers the opportunity to develop a psychoanalytic approach to contemporary socio-cultural issues, in particular questions of political ideology, social conflict and violence. It engages with the relations between the psychoanalytic and social fields by exploring how to conceive of a psychoanalytic social theory. It questions how we can provide a specifically psychoanalytic account of social relations and it engages with issues raised by post-structuralist and feminist accounts of sexuality.

Who is this degree for? Previous and current students have included art and film students, teachers and art historians as well as psychologists and analysts, and recently a performance artist. Many overseas students have also undertaken this degree, not only from European countries but also from Latin America and further afield.

Careers
Upon graduation you will be equipped to further develop your interests in psychoanalytic practice and in the study of contemporary social issues. Some students have gone on to teach and lecture in this area while others have become (Lacanian) analysts, or have taken other intensive analytic training courses. Several students have subsequently undertaken PhD degrees not only directly in psychoanalytic studies but also in art history. Others have used their degrees in different ways through careers in business and the commercial sector, or in youth work and management.
