The Children, Youth and International Development MA will equip you with the conceptual understanding and breadth of empirical knowledge to critically evaluate policy and practice in the area of children, youth and development.

The core modules focus on key issues relating to children, youth and international development, including the rights and participation of young people. They also prepare students in research design and practice. The optional modules offer a unique opportunity to appreciate in depth how children and youth-related issues are addressed from alternative disciplinary perspectives.

This MA provides a varied programme with a global perspective that equips students for roles at senior levels in international development organisations, government ministries and global agencies.

The conceptual understanding and breadth of empirical knowledge that will enable you to critically evaluate research, policy and practice in the area of children, youth and development.

Course Content

The programme combines four core taught modules (accounting for 90 credits) with 30 credits worth of options.

The programme is intended to relate to the needs of organisations working in the field of children, youth and international development. Students will have the opportunity to undertake a sustained project with an external organisation as part of a placement module. This may be an organisation with which they already have links, such as a current of former employer. They may also choose to apply their 60 credit dissertation to the needs of an identified community or organisation.

High value placements: Students may opt for the ‘Applied Learning’ module which involves a short placement (one or two days a week for 10 weeks) with an organisation that works in the field of children, youth and international development. Through the placement, a series of workshops and coursework assignments they will examine the relevance and responsibility of their academic studies to community work, voluntary action and paid work, as well as having the opportunity to develop transferable, personal and subject specific skills to enhance their employability on completing their postgraduate degree.

Pioneering research: In both core and specialist option modules, students will be exposed to innovative high profile research in the field of children, youth and international development.

Eramus Exchange: An Erasmus agreement exists between the Brunel University’s MA in Children, Youth and International Development, and the MPhil in Childhood Studies at the Norwegian Centre for Child Research (NOSEB), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. The exchange programme has two places for students from the MA Children, Youth and International Development. The exchange period is the second term / semester (approximately January to May). Erasmus students do not pay tuition fees at NOSEB, and are entitled to an Erasmus grant (€375/month) to cover any additional costs.

Teaching

A range of teaching and learning techniques are employed on the programme, most of which stress the active involvement of students in discussion and debate. The MA also emphasises reflective, independent learning, both by individuals and groups, and students are well supported to achieve this - through tutorials, workshops and seminar discussions.

Staff place a strong emphasis on tutorial support and all students are assigned to a tutorial group. Regular tutorials focus on the development of study skills (critical reading and writing), careers support, exam and assignment preparation, feedback on assessments and help in developing research proposals.

MA Creating Writing students are taught by some of the most talented, original, exciting and experienced writers publishing in the industry today. Brunel’s creative writing staff have between them published over 80 books and have written for television, film and radio. The team includes writer and broadcaster Will Self and renowned performance poet, writer and broadcaster Benjamin Zephaniah.

The broad range of forms, techniques and strategies taught on the MA Creative Writing gives you the opportunity to experiment and discover which suits you best. The programme is designed around the core activity of producing a major prose fiction project, which can be a novel fragment with synopsis, a novella or a collection of short stories, of publishable quality and produced in a marketable form.

Dissertation in Digital Games Design: Theory and Design - either 12,000-18,000 words or 8,000 words with practical component - delivered in either digital format or as a design document (term 3, 60 credits)

Students are expected to use the MA forum for discussions and are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular support activities such as game jams, local game related and networking events in order to practice the creative and technical skills developed throughout the programme and foster conversation and connections that are an invaluable part of the post-graduate experience.

Special Features

The university’s Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard Learn) is used extensively to support the school-based tasks and to sustain critical discussion.

Year 1 - starts by focusing on pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning that can positively impact, and make a real difference to, pupils and schools.

Students will have some seminars together, and work in smaller groups with teachers from a range of subject areas or phases.

For example, the Responsive Teaching module provides a lens through which students critically explore a range of contemporary issues relating to educational provision and their own practice framed around five key themes: folk pedagogies; funds of knowledge; culturally responsive teaching; pupil voice; and, assessment for learning.

Year 2 - the programme begins by focusing on pupils, and then considers how teachers and schools can respond. Students will have some seminars together and work in either subject-specific groups or general groups.

For example, the Learners and Learning module provides a lens through which students critically explore a range of contemporary issues relating to educational provision and their own practice framed around four key themes: learning; designing learning/mediating a curriculum; assessment and motivation; and, schools, equity and achievement.

Year 3 - all students will undertake a Research and Development project which involves implementing a new strategy and reviewing its progress, while working with colleagues.

Core teaching for all students will be supported by work in supervision groups and action learning sets exploring the specific applications and implications of these key ideas in their curriculum areas.

All students are expected to contribute to an annual conference held for course participants by presenting ideas about effective research instruments and strategies to evaluate the efficiency of the teaching innovations they have introduced.

This MA is designed to provide you with a training in classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theory. It provides you with a clinical grounding through its emphasis on the clinical writings of Freud, Klein and Lacan. Classic case studies, contemporary cases and case presentations by practising analysts are central to this course.

The MA also offers the opportunity to develop a psychoanalytic approach to contemporary socio-cultural issues, in particular questions of political ideology, social conflict and violence. It engages with the relations between the psychoanalytic and social fields by exploring how to conceive of a psychoanalytic social theory. It questions how we can provide a specifically psychoanalytic account of social relations and it engages with issues raised by post-structuralist and feminist accounts of sexuality.

Who is this degree for? Previous and current students have included art and film students, teachers and art historians as well as psychologists and analysts, and recently a performance artist. Many overseas students have also undertaken this degree, not only from European countries but also from Latin America and further afield.

Assessment
Assessment is by coursework and a final dissertation of up to 15,000 words.

Careers
Upon graduation you will be equipped to further develop your interests in psychoanalytic practice and in the study of contemporary social issues. Some students have gone on to teach and lecture in this area while others have become (Lacanian) analysts, or have taken other intensive analytic training courses. Several students have subsequently undertaken PhD degrees not only directly in psychoanalytic studies but also in art history. Others have used their degrees in different ways through careers in business and the commercial sector, or in youth work and management.
