Well-crafted communications strategies are central to the positioning of international organizations, national governments, and the diverse range of actors composing civil society. As civil society's importance grows globally, understanding its dynamics is increasingly central for anyone who wishes to intervene on its terrain.

The optional development communications track within the Master of Arts in Global Communications (MAGC) explores how civil society actors use communication to achieve their goals. A cutting edge curriculum offers a combination of practical branding, PR, production, and social media courses complemented by crucial theoretical and analytical courses treating actual cases.

Theoretical foundation for broad understanding

This track is designed for both professionals seeking broader academic training and new students seeking a range of specific training and broad understanding. Students study specific issues of global civil society relating to broad categories of freedom and expression, advocacy, governance, and the rule of law. The theoretical part of this degree examines issues of power, political and institutional agency, discourse, and mediated communication. Current trends in governance, non-state and civil society organization will be studied.

Hands-on training for practical application

In addition to equipping students with new or expanded communications skills, the hands-on practical courses and modules enable students to think critically, on the basis of case studies, about interaction between the State, private business, and the third sector. Themes studied include both internal and external communication in organizations.

Practica have been run outside France in Morocco and India. Students will gain insight into communication between NGO members, within the NGO world and civil society, between NGOs, donors and governments, and between NGOs and the corporate world.

The optional Visual and Material Culture Track (VMC) within the Master of Art in Global Communications (MAGC) offers an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural consideration of the increasing importance of visuality and interactivity in today’s world.

Students acquire in-depth knowledge of visual theories, contexts, and practices and their relationship to the global media—and develop critical thinking about the cultural forces behind visuality as a communicative practice.

Vision and visuality: more than meets the eye

Social, political, and economic conditions shape seeing and the production of objects and events for visual consumption. Reaching beyond traditional understandings of media and communication, we examine such things as imaging systems, screen practices, data graphics, architecture, tourism, performance, gaming, body ornamentation, race, gender, and sexuality—and all of these on both a global scale and within regional traditions.

Incorporating non-Western contributions to the field, this track combines a critical approach to theoretical and scientific understandings of vision and visuality with a rigorous consideration of the functions of the viewer, object, and environment in specific circumstances.

Ideal candidates—and outcomes

Students pursuing this track will likely have studied or worked in art, anthropology, cultural studies, psychology, design, publishing, marketing, image-based journalism or film—or be interested in pursuing careers in those fields.

The VMC track prepares students for professional careers in communications or further graduate study.

The program requirements for the MAGC Visual and Material Culture Track are as follows:
-Three core courses (12 credits)
-Three core electives (12 credits)
-Four elective courses from the general Global Communications graduate course offerings (16 credits)
-Final project: thesis or internship (8 credits)

Core courses focus on the fundamentals of global communications and the physical and cultural conditions of vision. You may explore how people come to identify—and believe in—brands, or study representations of gender in a globalized media environment.

As for electives, you have the choice of several practicums, including in video, broadcasting, branding, and advertising, as well as courses as diverse as identify formation to color as communication in marketing and art.

The programme consists of research training, two compulsory 30-credit modules and two 30-credit subject options, plus a dissertation.

You spend the autumn and spring terms viewing and discussing films in modules that are designed to address a range of practical and theoretical issues, including authorship, genre, stardom, style, modernity, nationalism and internationalism. Seminars will also cover debates in philosophy and film theory on the nature of filmic representation and its relationship to language, art, emotion, and consciousness.

The spring term in Paris will allow you to focus more on French cinema and its context, and to consider the impact of French critics and filmmakers on the wider discipline of Film Studies. In the summer term you will complete your one-year MA by writing a dissertation of up to 15,000 words on a topic agreed with tutors.

Modules

During the first term, you take two 30-credit taught-course modules from your chosen MA pathway. You then spend the second term in Paris, studying two modules from a choice which varies from year to year.

This means that during the spring term you are free to construct your own programme from across the range of modules available (see Paris Module Collection), making it as focussed or as inter-disciplinary as you like. You have plenty of time during the autumn term to make informed decisions about your programme of studies in Paris.

All the spring-term modules have been designed to be specifically relevant to your experience of living and studying in Paris.You are encouraged to make full use of the city’s cultural resources and to integrate these into your studies which means you will be able to explore and discover connections between history, literature, the visual arts and other media.

The digital, the global, the local

As a MAGC student, you’re encouraged to develop a layered understanding of:
-Today’s digital revolution
-The economic transformations caused by brand globalization
-The intercultural challenges associated with new media and globalization—and the development of appropriate responses by governments, corporations, and NGOs
-The development of communications industries, including global advertising, social networking, search engines, and image management

You’ll study digital media development and globalization and become active world citizens in these processes. You’ll develop theoretical knowledge and critical research skills in media and communications, and receive practical hands-on training in areas including international advertising, branding, public relations, video production, and advocacy.

Courses are taught by academic researchers and top practitioners in their respective fields.

Challenging coursework, compelling experiences

The program provides students with theoretical core courses in global communications, global cultures, global media, rhetoric and globalization, as well as in new methodologies for emerging fields, branding, advertising, and cultural policy.

The optional fashion track within the Master of Arts in Global Communications (MAGC) addresses this misperception. It offers courses taught by theorists of fashion and professionals in the field. Students get the chance to explore the many facets of fashion communications.

From traditional to cutting-edge

The specialized fashion track of MAGC provides an in-depth background applicable to careers in traditional fashion communications, as well as in several expanding and cutting-edge aspects of the industry including:
-The marketing of global luxury brands.
-The rise of ethical fashion, such as cause-related marketing, Labor Behind the Label, and sustainable consumption.
-NGO fashion and textile production for sustainable development.
-Cultural implications of globalized fashion.
-The digital revolution in fashion journalism and marketing including blogs and websites.

Students take introductory background courses which provide theories and models to prepare them for study of specific fashion issues in modules. These modules are taught by visiting professionals and researchers, top in their fields.

You also have a choice of practicums in sustainable development, NGOs, or Branding and courses in PR and journalism.

Our Film programme, taught in Paris, offers a thorough grounding in postgraduate-level film and is suitable both for graduates in the subject and those new to it. Teaching ist by experts in Film and seeks to engage you with the key elements that make up the diverse nature of film and moving images. It is the only Film MA offered by a British university in Paris and taught in English.

You will spend the entire year in the French capital, which will allow you to participate in excursions to prominent cultural locations and make use of research resources that are only available in Paris, such as the French Cinémathèque. You will study film at postgraduate level within the context of a city that is central both to the development of film making practices and to critical and theoretical approaches to the cinema.

Students interested in taking this MA as a part-time option would take two modules each year (one per term), plus the dissertation in the final year. The Film MA can also be studied between Canterbury and Paris, with the first term at our Canterbury campus and the spring term at our centre in Paris. You can also study the programme at Canterbury only.
