This programme is for people who are interested in taking an international and comparative perspective on educational issues. We offer two pathways on the International Studies in Education, the general International Studies in Education and the Education and Development specialist pathway. The specialist pathway shares the same core themes and outcomes, however it has a distinctive focus and different compulsory modules.

The International Studies in Education programme may be of interest to teachers, headteachers/principals, education administrators, and those working with non-governmental organisations and international agencies that play a role in formal and non-formal education. It will enable you to have a critical understanding of key debates surrounding education as an international issue and to make analytical comparisons between educational issues in different contexts, including your own.

This programme is designed for people who want to gain an international perspective on education. You will be studying with a wide range of people from different countries, with diverse career aspirations, and with varied levels of experience. What you will all have in common is an interest in education, and a desire to understand its functions in different parts of the world, and as a global phenomenon.

Programme Aims

You will have a critical understanding of key debates surrounding education as an international issue
You will make analytical comparisons between educational issues in different contexts, including your own
Global social justice is a theme of all strands of this programme.

Specialist pathway

The Education and Development pathway is in collaboration with the International Development Department in the School of Government and Society. It follows the same broad lines of the core programme, but has a different focus and different compulsory modules.

The Management of Special Education in Developing Countries is a full-time programme is for teachers, administrators and non-governmental organisation (NGO) staff who are working in special education in developing countries and who wish to develop their management or leadership expertise. Although most students are not from the EU, this course is also suitable for UK/EU students. The programme combines modules in Special Education with modules in International Studies in Education, using theory and practice from both in order to enable participants to improve management practice in the national context in which they work. A research dissertation also enables participants to put together management and special education in a uniquely relevant way for them.

This International Studies in Education programme has been taught at the School of Education for 50 years, and the School has one of the largest SEN departments in the UK. In consultation with tutors, you will choose modules totalling 100 credits from those available in the International Studies in Education and Special Education programmes, with a minimum of two modules from either field. You will also need to take the Practioner Inquiry in Education (PIE) module. A research dissertation will enable you to put together management and special education in a way which is uniquely relevant way for you.

Our strategy towards research and research degrees is centred on three key principles:

Research should seek to combine scholarly and empirical work on fundamental issues with a concern for development work linked to practice; a dialogue between fundamental study and development work can enrich both
Research should recognise the importance of professional practice and be pursued through active collaboration with schools, colleges, LAs, and voluntary and other professional bodies in the UK and internationally
Research is often a multidisciplinary activity and strong links across specialisms must be encouraged and supported
The interdependence of research with development and professional practice means that we particularly welcome the contribution of research students to our work. We provide a comprehensive programme of research training, together with opportunities to take part in research seminars where speakers with national and international reputations present work that is at the forefront of current debates within the field.

The Education MA by Research:

The MA by Research is a pure masters level research course. Students will need to complete a thesis of 40,000 words maximum and a research training programme.

This programme is suitable for applicants who are interested in developing their independent research skills and many students who complete this course progress onto PhD study afterwards.

This Teaching English as a Foreign Language programme (TEFL, also known as TESOL in some countries) based in the School of Education, offers a unique opportunity to study for a qualification which links teaching English to wider issues of school-based education.

The modules will provide you with a strong grounding in theoretical literature as well as appropriate classroom methodology, course design and an introduction to the key research tools. The programme is designed to be practical and you will have opportunities to create bespoke teaching and learning materials as well as visit British schools to observe classroom teaching.

The TEFL programme is aimed at individuals with knowledge and understanding of current debates relevant to the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language. The aim is to support you in becoming a reflective TEFL practitioner, a competent educational researcher and an active member of the international academic and professional TEFL community.

There are three core modules for the Teaching English as a Foreign Language programme:

Communicative Language Teaching, Syllabus Design and Assessment
Language, Discourse and Society
Second Language Learning
These modules give you a strong grounding in appropriate classroom methodology, and course design with the opportunity to create your own teaching and learning materials. Other modules provide opportunities to visit British primary, secondary and language schools, and prepare you for your dissertation. The MA Education TEFL Dissertation Prize is awarded annually to the best TEFL dissertations in the School of Education whose work demonstrates significance, originality and methodological rigour.

We offer a wide range of options to choose from, including Curriculum Design in Global Contexts, Leadership for School Improvement, Personal and Professional Skills for Education Management, Online Learning, ICT in Education, Education as an International Issue, and Special Educational Needs of Children with Autism. You will have the chance to participate in events organised by our research centre MOSAIC, such as conferences and popular seminar series with renowned international TEFL researchers.

Please note that the acronym TEFL is mainly used in the UK, whilst TESOL is often used as an acronym in Australia or the USA. TESL is another term you may hear.

This Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) fulltime, campus- based programme is designed for educational and health practitioners that work with, or have an interest in working with, children identified as having special educational needs and disabilities. Read more
This Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) fulltime, campus- based programme is designed for educational and health practitioners that work with, or have an interest in working with, children identified as having special educational needs and disabilities. It provides opportunities for participants to reflect on their practice, to critique the conceptualisation of disability within culture and society, and to be analytical as to SEND practices and policies.

This course is internationally focused, and examines SEND practices around the world. Students will, however, be given opportunities to experience UK schools and to engage in research at both the UK and international level.

Awards available on the SEND programme
PG Cert – 3 modules (60 credits at M Level)
PGDip – 6 modules (120 credits at M Level)
MA – 6 modules plus a 15,000 word dissertation (180 credits at M Level)

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) programme will enable you to deepen and extend your knowledge and understanding of educational and social theories which are related to working with children and young people with a range of special educational and individual learning needs.

The programme utilises lectures, seminars, tutorials, school visits, practical tasks, and discussions. Lectures and seminars are facilitatedby academics who are leaders in research in the field of SEND.

The programme has been designed to allow opportunities for individualisation of content to ensure that it is relevant to your professional and personal needs. As a student on the programme, you will be expected to be self-directed in your learning, and propose projects that can be practical, theoretical, or both. If you choose to pursue the MA award, you will have the opportunity to design and implement research that will allow you to gain skills in research design and methodology.

This programme is designed to supplement professionals already working in the field, or those seeking a general introduction to topics within special educational needs and disabilities. In general, this includes educators already working with students with special educational needs and disabilities, support workers in places such as a university or workplace disability service unit, a social worker or nurse providing care for persons with disabilities, someone working for a non-governmental organization dealing with disabilities issues, or a staff member of a Ministry of Education or Ministry of Health, amongst other things. This programme is not intended to be a training programme for Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs), nor will it provide specific teacher training to directly work with students with disabilities in education or health settings.

The School Improvement and Educational Leadership programme is designed for those who are aiming to make a difference in schools through leadership that is focused on learning. Leadership in schools takes many forms: through school and departmental leadership teams, but also through collaboration between teachers and schools on specific problems in teaching and learning. You will be part of a research-led community which uses and develops evidence-based practice to identify and share approaches which can be shown to make a difference in particular contexts.

There are three 'M' levels associated with the programme in School Improvement and Educational Leadership.

Masters - 180 credits which are achieved by passing all four core (compulsory) modules, two optional modules and a dissertation (which is worth 60 credits).
Postgraduate Diploma - 120 credits which are achieved by passing all four core (compulsory) modules and two optional modules.
Postgraduate Certificate - 60 credits which are achieved by passing at least two of the core modules and one further optional modules.

Are you interested in a career in English language teaching? Are you already an early-career teacher of English and want to advance your professional standing?

Our distinctive MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed for those with less than one year’s language teaching experience. We explore different approaches to the teaching and learning of English and study the close relationship between language teaching theory and practice. The programme encourages you to use the concepts and theories that you encounter during your course of study in your own classroom.

You will study five core modules:

Language Teaching Observation and Practice
Second Language Learning and Teaching
Syllabus and Materials Design
Teaching and Learning Grammar and Vocabulary
Research Methods in Applied Linguistics

You will also choose two optional modules from a wide range of choices.

You will do a total of six assessed pieces of coursework over the year. For assessment purposes, one of the modules you take during the spring term will be ‘linked’ with the Research Methods module – that is, you will produce a piece of work in the field covered by that module, but with a particular focus on research methods. You will complete the programme with a 15,000-word dissertation.
