The MA in Physical Education and Sport Studies will develop and enhance the knowledge and skills of its students to provide them with the potential to make a significant contribution to the sport and education industries. The ever changing and complex nature of this area means that there is a need for high quality, effective managers and leaders with the knowledge and capabilities to drive evolving education and community initiatives. Thus, the course is suitable for existing professionals within the sports and education industry and those with an appropriate undergraduate qualification who aspire to a career in the area of physical education and school sport.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve access to children and/or vulnerable adults. You will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB) and we will guide you through this process.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport and Wellbeing has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite guest speakers from industry to speak to students within modules across a range of our courses.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The teaching and learning environment will be interactive and challenging. It is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories and, where appropriate, practices relevant to work within the PESS sector form a central role in the student's learning. Throughout the programme students will engage in a range of learning activities including lectures, seminars, debates, case studies, presentations and group work. The staff on the programme are friendly and supportive and have a high degree of professional experience both within higher education and working in the industry. This means that learning is stimulating, creative and challenging.

Assessment includes consultancy reports, essays, presentations, interviews, and for those completing the Master of Arts Programme, a dissertation. All of these are designed to relate to current practice within the sports industry.

TESOL with Applied Linguistics will enable you to develop the solid foundation of knowledge and the practical skills you need to teach English to non-native speakers of the language.

This postgraduate degree course will equip you with a thorough grounding in teaching methodology, classroom management, an in-depth knowledge of lexis, grammar and phonology, and the way in which language is learned. It will also help you to develop the analytical and reflective skills you need to continue to develop as a professional.

English is the world’s foremost language, and literally millions are learning it. Teaching English is a truly rewarding and fulfilling career, and one which will enable you to travel widely and come into contact with other cultures. There is an increasing demand for well-qualified TESOL professionals around the world.

INDUSTRY LINKS

We have great links with employers within the world of ELT and regularly advertise jobs and job fairs. Employers also visit the campus on a regular basis.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

You will have a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops, with approximately eight hours of class contact per week. A student-centred approach is emphasised in the teaching and learning process. You will be expected to prepare thoroughly for all classes.

The course combines a focus on principles and theories with a concern to help you develop practical skills. It is taught by people who are both academic researchers, practitioners and teacher-trainers in their own right. We have a range of experience in a number of teaching contexts around the world.

You will complete a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic which you have a desire to investigate and will be encouraged to present your findings at UCLan postgraduate conferences, in refereed journals and at international conferences in the field, such as IATEFL and NATESOL.

We regularly host internationally-renowned guest speakers for talks and conferences on campus. See the video of Professor Rod Ellis below for an example.
