Our MA in TESOL is designed for those who would like to obtain a substantial postgraduate qualification in the field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). It is suitable both for those early in their professional lives (who may have little or no teaching experience), as well as those who are experienced teachers.

Learning, teaching and assessments

Modules are delivered via a variety of innovative and engaging teaching methods. You will take part in interactive seminars, presentations and group work as well as attending lectures and tutorials. There are also opportunities for classroom teaching and observation, as well as for individual research.

All assessment is by written assignment, except for Teaching in Practice where assessment involves a series of teaching practice sessions and a short oral presentation on an area of interest within your own classroom practice, experienced during the Teaching in Practice module.

The taught element of the course is complemented by a substantial piece of research leading to the completion of a dissertation in a student’s particular area of interest.

Career prospects

Graduates of the TESOL programmes work as teachers in TESOL all over the world.

It is designed for those who have little or no teaching experience and builds on our extensive experience and highly successful distance learning Masters programmes in TESOL. A distinctive feature is the Teaching in Practice module. You can develop more in-depth skills by choosing your optional module.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment

You will take part in interactive seminars, presentations and group work as well as attending lectures and tutorials. There are also opportunities for individual research. Assessment is on a credit accumulation basis and by written examination (practical translation modules), oral examination (text analysis module), extended essay (remaining modules). For Teaching in Practice, teaching performance will also be assessed. Successful completion of the taught modules is a precondition for proceeding to a 15,000 word dissertation leading to the MA.

Career Prospects

Graduates on the translation studies programmes have gone on to work as translators, technical editors and translation project managers for translation companies and software developers, both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Graduates of the TESOL programmes work as teachers in TESOL all over the world.
