The programme covers relevant areas of moral and political theory, comparative policy analysis, and health economics, to allow students to come to a wide understanding of background issues, history and constraints, in order to be able to make a positive contribution to current debates in this field.

The programme focuses on the development experiences of the 28 nations that have emerged from the former Soviet bloc in Europe and Asia. Students analyse the impact of institutional reforms on diverse outcomes, including economic performance, socio-economic development, financial integration, democratisation, innovation and entrepreneurship, and internationalisation.

The Educational Planning, Economics and International Development MA will provide students with the relevant knowledge, understanding and skills to work in educational planning, policy, management and administration in the context of international development. The programme focuses on issues affecting low and middle income contexts.

About this degree

This programme provides students with an opportunity to identify the interconnections between society and the economy, and the implications for educational planning, whilst applying economic principles to educational planning issues. It will also provide the opportunity to critique the ways in which economic analysis and evidence are applied to education policy issues, giving students an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to educational planning in low and middle income contexts.

The International MA in Economy, State and Society is a unique, innovative, dynamic yet firmly established postgraduate programme offered by a consortium of leading European universities. It leads to the award of a highly prestigious double degree.

About this degree

The programme combines rigorous research methods training, discipline-based and area studies training, and intensive language tuition. Students develop cultural and linguistic knowledge of Eastern and Western Europe, and acquire the skills to identify and critically analyse key factors shaping the economies, states and societies of the expanding European region.

Students take modules to a total value of 120 ECTS, with 60 ECTS taken in year one at UCL and 60 ECTS taken in year two at their chosen institution.

  • Historical Methods and Approaches (12 ECTS)
  • OR ANY TWO OF THE FOLLOWING MODULES:
  • Political Sociology (6 ECTS)
  • AND ONE OF THE METHODS MODULES:
  • Qualitative Methods (6 ECTS) OR Introduction to Discourse Analysis (6 ECTS) OR Understanding and Analysing Data (6 ECTS)

*If not taken in year one, a Language module is compulsory in year two.

Dissertation/report
