Our Mission

The Counselling Psychology Program, in line with the mission of the research-intensive University of British Columbia, creates, advances and critically examines knowledge in counselling psychology, especially with respect to its validity, applicability, limits, and interface with other disciplines. In developing and applying pertinent and innovative research methodologies, the Counselling Psychology Program relies upon and builds qualitative and quantitative evidence to determine effective counselling interventions in educational, community, health, and occupational settings.

The Counselling Psychology program recognizes the critical importance of diversity in our rapidly changing and globalized society, and provides leadership in emphasizing culturally-based considerations in learning, human development, assessment and counselling. In addition to its cultural lens, our program embraces positive, growth-oriented, and developmental perspectives across the lifespan. Attention is also paid to the complex ecological influences on individuals, groups and communities. Our faculty members’ programs of research reflect the core values and foci of the discipline of Counselling Psychology: career development, health and wellness, indigenous healing, gender and cultural diversity, disability, and social justice issues. Our Master’s and Doctoral programs address the needs of individuals, couples and families across the lifespan in terms of research, teaching and counselling practice.

Our Mandate

Our graduate programs adhere to the scientist-practitioner model. Rigorous theoretical and research training is integrated with the development of core counselling competencies. In addition to our core curriculum at the Master’s and Doctoral levels, our students can specialize in community, school, higher education or vocational rehabilitation counselling. Our programs focus on the education of the whole person – promoting not only students’ professional development, but also helping them to realize their intellectual, physical, and emotional potential. Faculty view their roles as facilitators of learning rather than providers of information, and strive for excellence in their research, teaching, and community and professional engagement. The mandate of our programs is the preparation of professional counsellors, counselling psychologists, and scholars in the field of Counselling Psychology.

Program Goals

The mission, philosophy and values of the Program are represented in five specific program goals:
- Goal 1
Graduates will demonstrate critical understanding of counselling theory, research, and practice and in the pursuit of a Master of Arts degree will demonstrate competence in planning, conducting, evaluating, and disseminating counselling psychology research.

- Goal 2
Graduates will have mastery of theoretical and empirical knowledge in Counselling Psychology.

- Goal 3
Graduates will acquire and demonstrate competency required for practice as counsellors in schools, community agencies, and higher education settings.

More specifically, I-O psychologists are interested in such topics as: recruiting and hiring the best people, improving employee skills, developing performance appraisal and reward systems, ensuring fair workplace procedures, motivating employees, fostering team work, leadership, and employee well-being.

The Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology program at the University of Guelph is unique in Canada because of our balanced approach to graduate education. We highly value both the research and practice in our field, and as a result, our graduates are highly sought after by both academic and applied employers.

On the research side, we have faculty who are heavily involved in basic and applied research and our graduate students have a strong record of winning research and thesis awards. In short, our faculty and graduates are working to extend our understanding of psychological phenomena in the workplace and to use this knowledge to improve productivity and the quality of life at work. As well, the I-O program is delighted to be a Canadian partner in the ERASMUS MUNDUS - Masters in Work, Organizational, and Personnel Psychology program. The mission of the School and Clinical Child Psychology (SCCP) program is to provide students with theoretical, research, and professional training in preparation for leadership in psychological practice with children, adolescents, and families in school, mental health, private practice, and research settings. The program follows a scientist-practitioner model and is designed to train students to conduct basic and applied research and provide professional training in psychological assessment, therapy, and other psychosocial and instructional interventions, professional consultation, and prevention.

Opportunities are available for research and professional work with infants, young children, adolescents, adults, and families. The degrees are intended to meet the academic requirements of the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) for registration as a Psychological Associate (MA) or Psychologist (PhD).

The curriculum of the SCCP program is designed to establish a strong foundation of core knowledge and skills early in the program, with students free to specialize later on. The program reflects a mix of courses and training opportunities.

A systemic approach is the basis for the training that is provided in assessment and intervention. The knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of school psychology and clinical child psychology overlap considerably, and experience in school and clinical settings complement and enhance each other. Therefore, over the course of the program of study, students are required to undertake practica in both school and clinical child settings.

The Clinical Psychology: Applied Developmental Emphasis (CP:ADE) Program focuses upon the developmental paths of children and youth experiencing psychological disorders within the contexts of family, school and community.

Attention is directed to several features including the social, emotional, cognitive, and neurobiological features of normal and atypical development; risk and protective factors that influence the course of development; the developmental impact of stressful life events; and developmental approaches to assessment, psychodiagnosis and therapeutic intervention.

Training follows a scientist-practitioner model in which an integrated series of courses and practica at the MA and PhD levels collectively contributes to the acquisition of competence as both child clinicians and researchers. Students take on cases in our on-campus clinic, the Centre for Psychological Services, and complete off-campus practica in hospitals, mental health settings and schools under the supervision of registered psychologists. In this way, students receive training to allow them to enter careers involving clinical and/or research positions in mental health centres, hospitals, schools, and the private sector, as well as careers involving teaching and research in university settings.

This training also prepares students to apply for registration as psychologists with provincial licensing boards. Our Ph.D. graduates have assumed careers in universities, hospitals, private practice, and school boards.

Faculty in CP:ADE pursue a wide variety of research including parent-child relational processes, shyness, adolescent relationships and dating, antisocial behaviour, autism and pervasive developmental disorders, injury prevention in children, pediatric pain, parental stress, attachment, moral psychology, stress and coping in children, eating disorders, adolescent heath risk behaviors, parental trauma history and symptoms, acquisition of literacy skills, learning disability, and developmental reading disorders.

The PhD program in Clinical Psychology: Applied Developmental Emphasis was first accredited in 2003, and recently re-acccredited by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) to 2019.

We have always been proud of the training provided in this program, of the students within it, and of their accomplishments on internship and after graduation. Accreditation represents external recognition of the high quality of our program.

Students take foundation courses in human development and research methodology. Elective courses cover a range of areas including cognitive, social, and emotional development; cognition and instruction (language, literacy, and mathematics); special education and adaptive instruction; developmental neuroscience; advanced research methodology and evaluation; and early childhood policy and programs, including child care. The MA and PhD programs are designed for students wishing to pursue an academic or research-based career. The MEd program is designed for the reflective teacher or other practitioner in education or related fields.

Our faculty members and graduate students employ diverse research strategies to answer questions and develop interventions related to issues in areas such as health, interpersonal relationships, violence against women, immigration, culture and community engagement.

Multiple Career Avenues

Our program of study is designed to be comprehensive and, at the same time, to provide the flexibility for students to select a set of courses suited to their career goals. Students have the flexibility to emphasize and receive training directed toward the pursuit of: (1) research in practical or applied settings (e.g., working with community organizations and consulting firms) and/or (2) research in academic settings (e.g., working in universities and colleges). As each student's desired emphasis is unique, our program provides the opportunity for students to select a balance of courses, applied work, and publication opportunities in the service of facilitating students' ultimate research and career goals.

Diverse methods

Faculty members and graduate students employ diverse research strategies to answer questions related to various social issues. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are valued as modes of inquiry, and emphasis is often placed on research conducted using community samples. Faculty and student research is conducted using multiple methods, including community surveys, archival research, interviews, observation, recordings of natural interactions, program evaluation, and experimental studies.

Practical Experience

Our graduate students have the opportunity to gain practical experience in a number of settings of their choosing where they conduct research, design and evaluate programs, participate in community-based research, and take part in consulting work. These experiences allow students to acquire new skills and to refine those previously acquired, to develop professional contacts, and to engage in knowledge translation and knowledge transfer activities.

School Psychology

The primary goal of the program is to develop professional psychologists whose research, training and practice activities increase the educational and psychological wellbeing of children and youth. The School Psychology program follows a scientist-practitioner model, with emphasis on the integration of theory, research and clinical skills. Training encompasses academic, social, behavioral, consultation, intervention and prevention domains, and students receive training in the integration of assessment and intervention and in relevant professional, legal and ethical issues. Science and professional practice are viewed as interactive and complementary, with research integrated across core psychological and educational foundations training as well as relevant practical experiences at all levels of the program.

Each year the Department of Psychology accepts between 15 and 20 graduate students from approximately 300 applicants. The MA program is a 24-month program and admission is restricted to those who intend to continue on to the PhD program in our department.

The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the Thesis. Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or Faculties.

Course detail

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory Thesis. The Thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a Thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the Thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a Thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. Candidates seeking potential supervisors should contact either the relevant academic department or the School of Graduate Studies.
