Scholars in the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education (LHAE) are engaged in a range of theoretical and practical fields: leadership and administration, policy and change, social diversity and community engagement. Themes running through our research and teaching include equity and social justice, professional education, policy studies, educational leadership and organizations, and adult learning within institutions and community settings. We develop and organize collaborative programs in support of particular research areas of interest including those in policy, international development education, and workplace learning. This field ties into work at multiple levels, elementary, secondary, ​and higher education systems, and extends into larger communities, both locally and internationally.

The Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education consists of three graduate programs representing the application of cognate scholarship to domains of practice. All programs offer courses of study leading to Master of Arts, Master of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Educational Leadership and Policy program and the Higher Education program also offer courses of study leading to Doctor of Education degrees. Applications must be made to one ​of the three programs and to one of the fields offered within each program according to the degree level of interest (see the list at the top of this entry).

This MA is a research-based degree and can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. During their program of study, MA students are expected to have exposure to both qualitative and quantitative approaches to research.

General Information

We offer a unique opportunity to explore the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean and the Near East. Our remarkably diverse faculty includes world experts who both teach, and conduct path-breaking research on, the archaeology, history, languages, literatures, and religions of ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece and Rome, including Judaism, Christianity, and early Islam. Our programs, which can be individually tailored to fit specific interests, foster interdisciplinary study, at the same time developing the relevant skill sets to prepare our students for future study and employment.

What makes the program unique?

Every program is unique and students have the option to design a perfect curriculum for them. Our strengths include rigorous training in the primary languages, Ancient Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Middle Egyptian, and Classical Arabic; broad coverage of the mythic systems of ancient civilizations; in-depth study of the dramatic, historical, legal, literary and religious texts produced by those civilizations; advanced training in practical methods of archaeology and epigraphy; and exploration of the traditions and receptions of antiquity by later eras.

Ancient Language Requirement

Candidates will be required to demonstrate reasonable competence in one of the classical languages. The minimum standard required is a grade of B-/68% in 6 credits of one of the following: GREK 301/302 (Greek Literature of the Classical Period) or LATN 301 (Latin Literature of the Classical Period) or HEBR 479 (Readings in Biblical Hebrew) or ARBC 420 (supervised study in Classical Arabic) or their equivalents. These 6 credits may form part of the course requirements for the M.A. program.

UNB offers the only comprehensive anthropology program in the Maritimes, with graduate study in sociocultural, archaeological, forensic, and biomedical anthropology.

Recent UNB graduates have gone on to top doctoral programs in Canada and abroad, or work in government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector across the Maritimes, including Archaeological Services New Brunswick, as well as consulting firms.

Graduate students have access to teaching and research labs in archaeology and biomedical anthropology, student lounge, and seminar room in the Anthropology building (Annex C) which also houses faculty offices. Students have access to two additional labs - one for archeology and one for human osteology and forensics in other buildings on campus.

Our graduate students enjoy a close-knit community with 15-20 students, including doctoral students in the Interdisciplinary PhD program.

Funding

A MA-level teaching assistantship is valued at approximately $15,000 over 12 months. Outstanding students, such as those who hold a first class honours degree, are eligible to receive a top up Board of Governor Merit Award, or a Magee-Third Century Postgraduate Merit Award, which could add approximately $3000.00 over 12 months. A maximum of five semesters of funding is possible.

The Department of Anthropology at Memorial has strong intellectual roots in both Europe and North America. At the graduate level, we offer thesis-based MA and PhD programs, both of which require ethnographic fieldwork. Recent graduate student field sites have included England, Ireland, France, Spain, Russia, Norway, Iceland, Mexico, Guatemala, and Jamaica, as well as various locations in the United States and Canada. We also offer a coursework-based MA program which does not require fieldwork. Our students benefit from the fact that we are a small department, which places a high priority on graduate supervision.

Many of our former graduate students have gone on to become professional anthropologists. Others have used anthropology to build careers in fields such as journalism, filmmaking, and public policy. In recent decades, the Department has placed a strong emphasis on the use of film and video in our research projects and has established a Visual Anthropology Unit, comprised of several faculty members and graduate students. A number of graduate students have been able to produce ethnographic films to accompany their thesis research. All graduate students have access to the Digital Research Centre for Qualitative Fieldwork, which houses a range of recording and processing equipment, including audio and video recorders and editing equipment, as well as a highly skilled full-time staff member to provide technical support and training.

MA – The MA program offers both course and thesis options. The thesis option requires an extended period of ethnographic fieldwork and can be completed in two years. The course option does not involve fieldwork and can be completed in one year.

Overview

The Department of Anthropology offers research training and courses of instruction in five fields:

The department offers a Master of Arts degree program in all five fields.

The Master of Science degree program is normally taken in three fields: Archaeology, Evolutionary Anthropology, and Medical Anthropology.

MA Program

Our MA program provides students with a broad knowledge of anthropological theory and research methods. Students build their research and writing skills in their graduate courses, culminating in the preparation of a significant piece of scholarly writing, which constitutes their MA thesis. The MA in Anthropology at UBC is based upon a combination of coursework, research and a thesis. Most students attain their degree within two years of starting the program; it is possible for a well-organized person to complete degree requirements during the first twelve to eighteen months of study.

The MA at UBC consists of the following course of study. Candidates must successfully complete

(1) Anthropology 500 (History of Anthropology)

(2) a professional seminar (Anth 506)

(3) an advanced methods course in ethnographic, archaeological or museum studies

(4) at least six credits of other elective courses

(5) after submitting an approved thesis proposal, a six credit thesis. The Anthropology MA thesis at UBC is modeled upon an article in a scholarly journal. It may be based upon original field research. In all cases, MA theses are limited to no more than 50 pages.

The Department accepts part-time MA candidates. The admission and residency requirements are the same as for the regular MA program, and the degree must also be completed within a five-year period. Anthropology 500 and 506 must be completed in the first year of study, the thesis proposal by the end of the second year.

Research focus

UBC offers graduate study in the fields of socio-cultural anthropology (including legal, medical, and ecological anthropology, oral and expressive culture, religion, globalization, and applied anthropology), linguistic anthropology, anthropological archaeology, biological anthropology, and museum studies. Faculty research interests include North America, Asia (Russia, India, Japan, and Korea), Mesoamerica, South America, Oceania, Europe, and Africa. The program provides training in quantitative, qualitative, archaeological and museum methods.

Related Study Areas

Interdisciplinary contacts are encouraged, and links are maintained with departments and programs such as Asian Studies, the Institute of Asian Research, Linguistics, History, Geography, Sociology, and the Centre for Women's and Gender Studies.

Facilities

Extensive research facilities are available in the Museum of Anthropology, and in the Laboratory of Archaeology. The UBC Library has excellent collections to support program interests, as well as a large collection of microform theses and dissertations, and the Human Relations Area files. Anthropology has a dedicated graduate computer lab with a wide range of software to support quantitative and qualitative research.

The Master of Arts in Child Study and Education Program is offered at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study, a centre of professional teacher training a​nd research in childhood and education, which includes a Nursery through Grade 6 Laboratory School.

The philosophy of this program is based on the belief that successful teaching requires an understanding of how children’s capacities, concerns, and behaviour change with age, how individual differences reflect developmental changes, and how social and physical environments influence children’s development.

The program introduces students to educational and developmental theory and research relevant to educational settings, showing how this research can inform classroom practice. Students also learn how to objectively study children, using both practical assessment and formal methods of inquiry. These areas of knowledge combined with knowledge of effective teaching methods (such as an inquiry-based approach) and learning environments result in educational practices that build on children’s current levels of development.

The non-thesis program requires two years of full-time study leading to a Master of Arts degree. Graduates are recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers for a Certificate of Qualification, which qualifies the holder to teach in the primary and junior divisions of Ontario schools.

This program offers two fields:
-Practice-Based Inquiry (PBI) in Psychology and Educational PracticeThe field is based on the use of collaborative inquiry and data-based decision-making to enhance teachers’ practice and student learning and success. This field will provide a foundation in the use of a broad range of information sources to address questions of practice using an inquiry cycle.

-Research-Intensive Training (RIT) in Psychology and Education
The field provides concurrent training in research methods and educational practice for elementary teacher certification. It supports the development of expertise in scientific examination of educational and psychological issues and highlights the integration between science and classroom practice.

The mission of the School and Clinical Child Psychology (SCCP) program is to provide students with theoretical, research, and professional training in preparation for leadership in psychological practice with children, adolescents, and families in school, mental health, private practice, and research settings. The program follows a scientist-practitioner model and is designed to train students to conduct basic and applied research and provide professional training in psychological assessment, therapy, and other psychosocial and instructional interventions, professional consultation, and prevention.

Opportunities are available for research and professional work with infants, young children, adolescents, adults, and families. The degrees are intended to meet the academic requirements of the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) for registration as a Psychological Associate (MA) or Psychologist (PhD).

The curriculum of the SCCP program is designed to establish a strong foundation of core knowledge and skills early in the program, with students free to specialize later on. The program reflects a mix of courses and training opportunities.

A systemic approach is the basis for the training that is provided in assessment and intervention. The knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of school psychology and clinical child psychology overlap considerably, and experience in school and clinical settings complement and enhance each other. Therefore, over the course of the program of study, students are required to undertake practica in both school and clinical child settings.

Memorial University’s Department of Archaeology includes archaeologists and bioarchaeologists whose interests span the ancient, precontact and historical records of the New and Old Worlds. The Department has particular strengths in the study of the North Atlantic region, and maintains active field research programs in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador. We are interested in the analysis of biological and cultural materials, theory, archaeological science and the history of archaeology. Since awarding our first MA in Archaeology in 1973 our graduate program has steadily expanded. We introduced a doctoral program in 2001, and now have a thriving community of graduate students working on a range of historical, indigenous and bioarchaeological projects.

Archaeology at Memorial has an international reputation due to the strong research profiles of its faculty members and students and its vibrant teaching programs. Students have access to state of the art in-house laboratory facilities and collections, and to a wide range of equipment and expertise in other departments that is sustained by faculty cross-appointments and cooperative research programs. Our mission is to inspire, engage and provoke educators to understand, inquire into, and model curricular and pedagogical possibilities of deep involvement with the visual arts in culture and society. Within a large research orientated university situated on traditional Musqueam land, the Art Education Program strives to:
Stimulate and conduct research within a vibrant and collaborative research community that focuses on methodologies and content relevant to the visual arts in culture and society.
Provide for, model, and develop socially responsible and ecologically aware exemplary teaching practices in and across contexts with a focus on the visual arts in culture and society.

The research interests of faculty in Art Education are diverse. The Critical and Curatorial Studies Program aims to address the growing need for curators and critics who have theoretical knowledge and practical experience in analyzing institutions, preparing displays and communicating about contemporary art. The program aims to produce individuals who are:
- able to engage productively with critical discussions of art and visual culture
- capable of developing and working with new modes of exhibition
- able to work creatively in both traditional and innovative situations
- familiar with issues and institutions affecting contemporary art

Critical and Curatorial Studies (CCST) is an emerging field of scholarship and training that looks directly at the roles and responsibilities of curators and critics as mediators between objects, institutions, experiences, individuals and groups. While this involves investigating and negotiating a number of disciplinary fields, from ethnography to aesthetics, organizational behaviour to cultural studies, the main focus is on contemporary conditions of display and understanding.

CCST students take three required graduate seminars that engage with historical frameworks and contemporary contextual issues within curatorial practice, and case studies in exhibitions and institutions. These popular seminars are open to other graduate students as well and foster interesting dialogues on issues surrounding curation. CCST students supplement their knowledge with Art History courses and are given the opportunity to take additional credits outside the department as well. They are also challenged to achieve reading knowledge of a language other than English for their language requirement, along with the MA in Art History and PhD students.

During the graduate practicum students gain professional experience through the research, planning, and realization of a significant project and are expected to rationalize their exhibition in written work and presentations at various stages during its production. Students are exposed to the practical and theoretical concerns of exhibition creation and are rewarded in their endeavour with local, if not national and international exposure.

The final requirement for the MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies program is the Major Paper. This extended essay provides students with the opportunity for original and in-depth research on a topic related to the themes or cases examined in the course of study.
