This leading-edge graduate program is the first of its kind in Canada’s tourism and hospitality education system. It responds to the worldwide demand for tourism and hospitality leaders to build and sustain a competitive advantage in the global tourism market. Timely and relevant program content has been designed in collaboration with industry experts, students, faculty and education partners. Students gain skills in destination development, leadership, sustainability and global tourism.

Who it’s for

Managers, owners and executives in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors who want to increase their competency as managers in the tourism and hospitality industry. Typically, students have a minimum of five years experience in the industry.

Students requiring English language upgrading can qualify for the MA in Tourism Management program through our Pre-Master’s Program (PMP).

The MA in Tourism Management is designed to meet the advanced learning needs of professionals in the broad, diverse tourism industry. The employment focus is on travel generators - that is, on the middle managers and senior leaders who initiate, design, develop product, and market destinations, events and conferences, and cultural and natural attractions.

There is market demand for managers and executives with advanced capabilities in corporate leadership, policy, planning, marketing, strategic thinking, and sustainability. Career opportunities include management and executive positions in resorts, municipal, provincial and federal governments and operating agencies, destination management and marketing organizations, events and conference management companies, and inbound tourism companies.

Additional opportunities exist for tourism educators in public and private post-secondary institutions, where a Masters degree is usually an occupational requirement. Combining prior tourism industry experience with the advanced level learning offered in the Masters program can significantly enhance assessment of an individual’s potential, develop career opportunities, and build networks of valuable industry contacts.

Applicants who do not have the formal academic education to qualify for admission may be assessed on the basis of both their formal education and their informal learning, in accordance with the Flexible Admission Policy.

Outcomes

Graduates of the MA in Tourism Management have a broad range of applied technical, interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills in tourism leadership. The four competencies, applied to the areas of tourism leadership, sustainable tourism, destination development, international hotel and resort management and applied research include communications, knowledge, leadership and teamwork, critical thinking and global awareness.

Upon completing the program, students have:
-Critically engaged with current theory, practice and process
-Examined case studies, research articles, report and industry information in the areas of tourism leadership, sustainable tourism, destination development and international hotel and resort management;
-Selected, analyzed and explored leadership concepts and skills and applied them to opportunities and challenges faced by leaders at individual, organizational, community and industry levels
-Explored the characteristics of successful, sustainable destinations with innovative product, well-defined markets, successful partnerships, and a positive contribution to the tourism and hospitality industry

By facilitating personal growth and the ability to adapt and respond to a complex and changing environment, the program helps you acquire advanced knowledge in accounting and related aspects of business.

Upon successful graduation from the Goodman MAcc CPA pathway program:

You will have completed the CPA PEP program in 7 months of full-time study, instead of 2 years of part-time study.
You will have completed all four CPA elective modules (Assurance, Tax, Finance and Performance Management) and have exceeded the elective requirements of CPA Ontario.
You will have completed two integrated capstone modules designed to prepare you for the CFE.
You will proceed to write the Common Final Evaluation (CFE) in the September immediately following your graduate program.
You may have chosen to complete a four month co-op work term which will count toward your CPA practical work experience requirement.

MAcc Curriculum

The integrated and innovative coursework in the MAcc ensures that you receive an unparalleled accounting education. Throughout the program, critical thinking, analysis and communication skills are developed through the use of case study analysis, student discussion, presentations and research papers.

MACC WITH CPA PATHWAY

Goodman’s MAcc CPA Pathway will allow you to complete all of the required courses and modules for the CPA designation. Upon graduation from the MAcc CPA Pathway, graduates will proceed directly to the CFE.

In the first term of the MAcc, you will take four courses that map to all of the CPA electives (Assurance, Finance, Tax & Performance Management), plus one general business elective. In the second term of the MAcc, you will be required to complete two program specific graduate accounting courses, one general business electives and two CPA Capstone courses (Integration and Team Management & Integration and Analysis) which focus on CFE examination preparation.

The MAcc CPA pathway program will be completed over seven months (January to July).

Overview

The M.A. program in Economics at UBC owes its strength to the quality of its research faculty, opportunities for intensive training in theoretical and applied work, and a diverse offering of specializations.

The 12-month M.A. program is designed to prepare students for employment in the public or private sector, or to pursue further studies in a Ph.D. program. Recent graduates have taken positions at the Bank of Canada, the Department of Finance, Statistics Canada, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers and numerous other organizations. Those looking to pursue a Ph.D. in economics have gone on to studies at Berkeley, Michigan, Minnesota, Princeton, Stanford, UCLA, as well as our own Ph.D. program!

Each year we typically admit about 50 students to our program. As a result we are able to offer training in a wide range of theoretical, empirical, and policy-related fields. Students may also take advantage of courses offered through The Institute for Advanced Studies in Economics, a collaborative teaching and research initiative by the Vancouver School of Economics and the Strategy and Business Economics division at the Sauder School of Business.

Virtually all of our research faculty hold grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and other funding agencies, resulting in numerous opportunities for experience as research assistants for our M.A. students. The School houses the Centre for Labour Studies and manages the British Columbia Inter-University Research Data Centre. Hence, unique training opportunities and access to data and computing resources are available to our students.

The School has its own computer lab for the exclusive use of our graduate students. The School lounge offers a comfortable space to chat with colleagues and faculty over coffee, and for study groups to meet to analyze and work out issues of debate in depth. The UBC Library collection numbers over one million volumes. In terms of economics material, the holdings are particularly extensive in serial publications and the post-war literature.

The Graduate Student Centre, of which all graduate students are members, is nearby and has facilities for social activities. In addition, the School holds regular social activities during the year. These include the Grad Student Welcome Party in September, and the School’s Holiday Party in December! Members of our School also take part in activities such as intramural sports and the annual 10km Vancouver Sun Run.

Curriculum and Learning encompass issues of content, context, and teaching in both formal and non-formal educational settings. The Department of Social Justice Education offers a multi- and interdisciplinary graduate program developed from the past programs of History and Philosophy of Education as well as Sociology and Equity Studies in Education. It is an intellectual community committed to producing and advancing knowledge on social justice education in Canada and beyond. Social justice education is a robust term, allowing for diverse meanings and methodologies.

This graduate program is concerned with both theoretical and empirical problems regarding in/equity in educational spaces, broadly conceived. Faculty and students approach their inquiries from disciplinary (e.g., anthropology, history, philosophy, political science, or sociology) and/or interdisciplinary (e.g., anti-colonial, critical race, disability, feminist, francophone, indigenous, or queer) perspectives. They focus on identifying new relationships and making connections by asking significant questions about social justice education within and across disciplines. Hence, they foreground research and teaching in social justice education, pursued through analytical and empirical tools from the humanities and social sciences.

The Goodman MPAcc (ISP) program

Your success as an MPAcc grad is due to our focus on a strong integrative approach to accounting and a curriculum that smoothly transitions you from international accounting to North American concepts.

The adaptation process begins the moment you arrive on campus. Through our Business English Program we make sure that you get a four-week customized course in business reading, writing, listening and speaking. But we also ensure that you adapt socially. In between classes, we’ve scheduled a full four weeks of activities and trips. You’ll visit Niagara Falls and Toronto, explore St. Catharines and settle into your new life. You’ll know your classmates, the Niagara region and feel comfortable and ready to begin your coursework.

MPAcc (ISP) curriculum

We build on your previous international accounting education with an MPAcc curriculum that is specially designed to give you an integrative approach to North American accounting principles. The cohort program includes an intensive English Language study program and three academic terms. Each semester builds upon your new skills and knowledge. All of your coursework is taken in classes exclusively composed of your fellow international students.

INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT WITH CO-OP

Our MPAcc program includes an optional paid co-op term where you will gain valuable skills, link theory to practice and make important industry connections.
