This course has been designed for educational professionals who are currently working in, or who aspire to work in leadership positions and/or careers in administration, universities/colleges, or development in their own contexts. The programme is taught by leading academics in the field of leadership, management, school effectiveness and improvement. Senior educational experts also contribute, including head teachers, inspectors, local authority officers and policy-makers.

Teaching encourages student participation, shared experiences and opportunities for practical application. Depending on your background and experience, you may find the approach rather different from your previous experiences of university.

Aims

-Provide an overview of current theories/frameworks for examining education policy and practice from a leadership perspective
-Develop your understanding of key leadership issues that influence teachers `performance in primary and secondary schools and other educational settings.
-Enable colleagues at all levels within educational institutions to identify issues and develop appropriate strategies to generate and sustain school improvement.
-Develop knowledge and understanding of practical approaches to school improvement and school effectiveness and of current theories, issues and debates in the field.
-Develop a range of learning and transferrable skills which integrate current research and best practice in the areas of school leadership and school improvement applicable to different students on different programmes.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught by world-leading researchers who focus on the realities of professional practice through using the social sciences. This includes Professor Mel Ainscow (an international expert in inclusive education), Professor Michael Apple (the world's leading critical educationalist), Steve Courtney (an expert on school restructuring, change and leadership), Professor Helen Gunter (known internationally for her work on policy and leadership), Professor David Hall (an expert in policy enactment and distributed leadership), Ruth McGinity (an expert on localised policymaking, change and leadership), Dr Susie Miles (known internationally for her specialist knowledge of inclusion and disability in developing country contexts), Professor Mel West (an international expert in school improvement and school effectiveness).

The course units are delivered through lectures, tutorials, group-work, case-based approaches, and enquiry-based learning, associated with school visits. Comprehensive training is provided in the use of electronic databases, library resources. We encourage both individual and co-operative learning and research and hope to foster an ethos of lifelong learning. We aim to build on the expertise of our students, many of whom are experienced leaders in education, and who bring with them a wealth of knowledge and practical experience from a wide range of different countries.

Career opportunities

Over the past decade graduates of this course have returned to over 40 countries around the world. They have mainly either entered or returned to teaching, lecturing or educational administration, while others have proceeded to further advanced studies.

The MA in Human Rights focuses on the pressing questions of human rights. Can there be space for human rights in world affairs? Who is responsible for the protection of human rights in world politics? These theoretical and practical concerns form the central focus of the degree and are addressed through the compulsory course units. This research route course is designed for students for whom a taught MA will be a prelude to a PhD. It will appeal particularly to those with an interest in the political, legal and ethical issues that arise from widespread human rights violations globally. The course provides students with an advanced, critical, interdisciplinary and systematic understanding of human rights issues within a global context. It is an interdisciplinary degree which allows student's exposure to developments in international politics, political theory, and law in order to better understand the complex global environment in which human rights claims are made.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over two years. There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme.

The MA in Political Economy programme at Manchester University offers a cross-disciplinary curriculum of study in political economy. The MA is housed in the Centre for the Study of Political Economy, which brings together the world-class research strengths in the field of political economy at Manchester University. The programme is taught from members across the Faculty of Humanities in the School of Social Sciences, the School of Environment and Development, and the Alliance Manchester Business School.

Each student will pursue their particular interests in political economy through one of four pathways:
-Theoretical Political Economy
-Political Economy of Society, Space and Environment
-Political Economy of Finance, Business and Work
-Political Economy of Development.

Each pathway offers courses drawn from across the different disciplines in the schools, offering the student a unique exposure to the full breadth of the field of political economy. The research route is an ESRC recognised 1 + 3 programme which offers training in both quantitative and qualitative research methods that prepare students for doctoral research.

Course description

The MA in Arts Management, Policy and Practice enables students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the history, theory and practice of arts management; to gain an insight into the range of professional opportunities in the creative and cultural sector; and to acquire direct experience of the many areas of arts management. The programme has a strong practical, hands-on element. At the same time it offers a solid theoretical grounding, exploring cultural policy in its historical context and encouraging critical engagement with the philosophical, political, social and economic imperatives informing contemporary practice. Above all, we aim to produce pioneers rather than bureaucrats.

Lecturers from the Centre for Arts Management teach the MA with considerable input from arts professionals including staff from the Martin Harris Centre, Contact Theatre, the Royal Exchange, Whitworth Art Gallery and many other local cultural organisations. We also work closely with our sister programme, the highly regarded MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies.

Aims

The programme is designed to serve as an entry-level qualification for recent graduates as well as offering professional development for mid-career practitioners. It offers flexibility and opportunities for specialisation, while ensuring a thorough grounding in essential principles and methodology. It provides a solid foundation for careers in different areas of the arts and creative industries, and caters for arts practitioners as well as aspiring managers.

This programme prepares graduates for a diverse range of career opportunities as managers, administrators, policy-makers or practitioners in various branches of the arts and cultural and creative industries. Opportunities exist in the public, private, and voluntary sectors; in theatres, opera houses, concert halls, arts centres, museums and galleries, and the media; with orchestras, theatre companies, dance companies, etc.; or with the Arts Council, British Council, Local Authority, Tourist Board and various funding bodies. This multidisciplinary degree course focuses on response to crises originating from both conflict-zones and natural disasters. Bringing together the study of medicine and humanities, the course provides an inclusive approach that mirrors the reality of aid operations and informs the reflexive processes of both analytical and applied disciplines. Students will be able to draw synergies from an exceptionally wide breadth of disciplinary traditions and research expertise.

Aims

1. Provide critical insights into competing perspectives on how Humanitarianism and Conflict Responses can be understood, analysed and explained - from both an historiographic and contemporary viewpoint.
2. Develop analytical skills in critically evaluating the idea of humanitarianism and the ways that responses to conflict are organised, justified and implemented. This includes competency in developing a reasoned argument, critically considering data sources and depending different approaches.
3. Develop skills in gathering, organising and using evidence and information from a wide variety of sources. This will be complemented by guidance on how best to manage workloads and obtain research materials.
4. Enable students to apply research skills to a relevant research area.

Students should be able to show a critical understanding of :
1. Key issues and debates in Humanitarianism and Conflict Response, familiarity with different theoretical approaches, practical problems and an appreciation of the diversity of policies at international and national levels.
2. Both the range of social science topics associated with Humanitarianism and Conflict Response and the normative and historiographic assumptions which underpin these issues.
3. The analytical and policy literature concerning the related issues of the causes of conflict, reconstruction, ethics and international governance structures and institutions, the role and perspectives of the state, multilateral and bilateral agencies, international and domestic NGOs and other civil institutions.
4. A detailed and extensive understanding of a specific conceptual and/or policy-related area of Humanitarianism and Conflict Response, of the implications and limitations of research findings on this subject; and of how to produce an original piece of academic research, all through their dissertation.
