The MA Education is typically taken over 2-3 years part-time (over 12-18 months full-time). To gain an MA Education you must complete 180 credits at Masters level. The programme also provides a basis for progression to doctoral study in education. To gain an MA Education, you must successfully complete 180 credits – 90 of these are from elective modules and 90 are from core/compulsory modules. The Postgraduate Certificate comprises 2 elective modules typically taken over 6-9 months part-time (over 4 months full-time).

Attendance

Modules are based at Newman, with sessions taking place from 5.30-7.30 on Monday-Thursday evenings. However, if there are significant numbers of staff in one institution wishing to undertake the programme we can deliver the programme on your site at times convenient to you.

Assessment

You will experience a range of assessment formats including portfolios, presentations and written assignments. The course will recognise your needs as a learner and develop independent study skills that are transferable to a range of learning situations and assessment tasks.

You will have access to all facilities at Newman including the library, which stocks a wide range of books, journals and e-books. Previous level 7 masters credits may be transferred (free-of-charge) through the accreditation of prior certificated learning (APCL). We offer two pathways on the International Studies in Education, the general International Studies in Education and the Education and Development specialist pathway. The specialist pathway shares the same core themes and outcomes, however it has a distinctive focus and different compulsory modules.

The International Studies in Education programme may be of interest to teachers, headteachers/principals, education administrators, and those working with non-governmental organisations and international agencies that play a role in formal and non-formal education. It will enable you to have a critical understanding of key debates surrounding education as an international issue and to make analytical comparisons between educational issues in different contexts, including your own.

This programme is designed for people who want to gain an international perspective on education. You will be studying with a wide range of people from different countries, with diverse career aspirations, and with varied levels of experience. What you will all have in common is an interest in education, and a desire to understand its functions in different parts of the world, and as a global phenomenon.

The Management of Special Education in Developing Countries is a full-time programme is for teachers, administrators and non-governmental organisation (NGO) staff who are working in special education in developing countries and who wish to develop their management or leadership expertise. Although most students are not from the EU, this course is also suitable for UK/EU students. The programme combines modules in Special Education with modules in International Studies in Education, using theory and practice from both in order to enable participants to improve management practice in the national context in which they work. A research dissertation also enables participants to put together management and special education in a uniquely relevant way for them.

This International Studies in Education programme has been taught at the School of Education for 50 years, and the School has one of the largest SEN departments in the UK. In consultation with tutors, you will choose modules totalling 100 credits from those available in the International Studies in Education and Special Education programmes, with a minimum of two modules from either field. You will also need to take the Practioner Inquiry in Education (PIE) module. A research dissertation will enable you to put together management and special education in a way which is uniquely relevant way for you.

Our students come from across phases and sectors in the field of art and design education providing you with the stimulation and challenges that different perspectives can bring.

Our practice pathway develops and renews your subject knowledge and connects you with contemporary creative and educational practice. The course is taught jointly with other practice led students from MA Fine Art and MA Art and Design: Interdisciplinary Practices.

Our theory-led pathway enables in-depth study in arts education. Dissertation research can make a real difference in your workplace and / or establish new career options for your future. If you’re already working in education you can base most of your research in the workplace.

This course will help your professional development by connecting with creative practice. Students will have the opportunity to personalise their learning through the modules chosen. This prepares students for life as a professional artist-educator, a PhD researcher or to work in other career areas.

The course is part of the Art Based Master's Programme - an integrated framework that allows students to build their own course. Core modules in any given course become option modules in all other courses. Students will have an opportunity to engage with other students from diverse learning and professional experiences. Various freestanding options are available.

This course is divided into three trimesters to allow students to work towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's qualification.

The modules will provide you with a strong grounding in theoretical literature as well as appropriate classroom methodology, course design and an introduction to the key research tools. The programme is designed to be practical and you will have opportunities to create bespoke teaching and learning materials as well as visit British schools to observe classroom teaching.

The TEFL programme is aimed at individuals with knowledge and understanding of current debates relevant to the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language. The aim is to support you in becoming a reflective TEFL practitioner, a competent educational researcher and an active member of the international academic and professional TEFL community.

There are three core modules for the Teaching English as a Foreign Language programme:

Communicative Language Teaching, Syllabus Design and Assessment
Language, Discourse and Society
Second Language Learning
These modules give you a strong grounding in appropriate classroom methodology, and course design with the opportunity to create your own teaching and learning materials. Other modules provide opportunities to visit British primary, secondary and language schools, and prepare you for your dissertation. This Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) fulltime, campus- based programme is designed for educational and health practitioners that work with, or have an interest in working with, children identified as having special educational needs and disabilities. It provides opportunities for participants to reflect on their practice, to critique the conceptualisation of disability within culture and society, and to be analytical as to SEND practices and policies.

This course is internationally focused, and examines SEND practices around the world. Students will, however, be given opportunities to experience UK schools and to engage in research at both the UK and international level.

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) programme will enable you to deepen and extend your knowledge and understanding of educational and social theories which are related to working with children and young people with a range of special educational and individual learning needs.

The programme utilises lectures, seminars, tutorials, school visits, practical tasks, and discussions. Lectures and seminars are facilitatedby academics who are leaders in research in the field of SEND.

The programme has been designed to allow opportunities for individualisation of content to ensure that it is relevant to your professional and personal needs. As a student on the programme, you will be expected to be self-directed in your learning, and propose projects that can be practical, theoretical, or both. If you choose to pursue the MA award, you will have the opportunity to design and implement research that will allow you to gain skills in research design and methodology.

This programme is designed to supplement professionals already working in the field, or those seeking a general introduction to topics within special educational needs and disabilities. In general, this includes educators already working with students with special educational needs and disabilities, support workers in places such as a university or workplace disability service unit, a social worker or nurse providing care for persons with disabilities, someone working for a non-governmental organization dealing with disabilities issues, or a staff member of a Ministry of Education or Ministry of Health, amongst other things. This programme is not intended to be a training programme for Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs), nor will it provide specific teacher training to directly work with students with disabilities in education or health settings.

The School Improvement and Educational Leadership programme is designed for those who are aiming to make a difference in schools through leadership that is focused on learning. Leadership in schools takes many forms: through school and departmental leadership teams, but also through collaboration between teachers and schools on specific problems in teaching and learning. You will be part of a research-led community which uses and develops evidence-based practice to identify and share approaches which can be shown to make a difference in particular contexts.

There are three 'M' levels associated with the programme in School Improvement and Educational Leadership.

Masters - 180 credits which are achieved by passing all four core (compulsory) modules, two optional modules and a dissertation (which is worth 60 credits).
Postgraduate Diploma - 120 credits which are achieved by passing all four core (compulsory) modules and two optional modules.
Postgraduate Certificate - 60 credits which are achieved by passing at least two of the core modules and one further optional modules.

This course is suitable if you want a JNC-approved qualification or if you are working in a community or education setting working predominantly with young people.

You will be taught to reflect on your role as a practitioner, asked to question and critically evaluate your professional role and create an environment where knowledge transfer and skills develop is encouraged.

The fieldwork practice arrangements required for this course will include two periods of supervised fieldwork practice, which will be 592 hours in total. In line with the National Youth Agency criteria, at least 148 of these 592 hours will be in an alternative practice context. The experience will be in two locations and 50% of the committed time will be with young people in the 13-19 age group. The total number of fieldwork practice hours will be equally divided over the course duration.

Engaging with young people and community involvement is recognised as essential to developing a cohesive society, and youth work has a key role to play in this. These courses are primarily for those working in or intending to work in local authority and voluntary organisation youth work settings.

These courses are recognised by the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) enabling students to gain a thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of such work as well as professional recognition.

These courses have been developed to provide a professional qualification in youth and community work for people working with, and managing organisations for young people or who intend to develop their career in this area. You will gain knowledge and experience of the policies, best practice and skills required to develop yourself both personally and professionally. Students will professionally qualify at the Postgraduate Diploma level. Those going onto the Masters will develop further research skills and have the opportunity to research their areas of interest in their dissertation.

Module Information

This is a modular programme in which the focus of your assignments will be negotiated to suit you and your working environment. You will enjoy the benefits of working with other groups of professionals, promoting multi-agency working whilst enhancing learning and teaching experiences. Fieldwork practice is central to the course, (placements for full-time students, work settings for part time students).
