Assessment of a portfolio that demonstrates continuous professional development. Portfolios will vary, depending on your individual aims and aspirations, but may include: work with radio journalists / filmmakers, involvement in publication of the Birmingham City University anthology or magazine, evidence of contact with agents / publishers, building websites for aspiring writers.

Each module will result in a piece of writing that will be assessed. Your work will be critiqued by staff but you will also be asked to critique the work of colleagues and vice versa.

Admission to the course is based on talent. Applicants are asked to submit writing, published or unpublished. Students are selected on the basis of their work.

You will learn how to apply design visualisation techniques and strategies to areas such as product design, interior design, graphic design and various other specialisations. Students will evaluate, choose and apply relevant theories, concepts and techniques to the solution of design and the knowledge that underpins it.

Graduates from this course can use their acquired knowledge and skills in a variety of jobs including: design practice: in-house and consultancy; design entrepreneurship- self-employment; 3D design visualisation in interior design, architecture, product design, 3D virtual environments for games; education as teachers/lecturers of design-related topics.

This is a 45-week course divided into three 15 week trimesters. Each trimester is divided into a ten week structured programme followed by five weeks of independent learning and reflection.

Modules

The Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) stage offers a choice of modules in which you will study Design Realisation which has a choice of project briefs from other MA programmes within the school, such as Interior or Product Design and Design Visualisation. Here you will complete a project showcasing your analogue and digital visualisation techniques, also exploring the potential of processes that are not totally dependent on digital technologies. These include evolutionary mock-ups, scenario enactment, physical modelling, two and three-dimensional collages and other animation techniques.

The Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) stage offers a choice of modules such as Competition or Collaboration and Collaborative Practice (Co-Lab). The competition brief will be based on a contemporary project where you will initially collaborate with other product or interior design MA students. Co-Lab offers a choice of exciting project briefs which can then be incorporated into the planning of your personal project. Each project brief will demonstrate your strengths in a chosen range of visualisation techniques, and the potential of those techniques for enhancing the effectiveness of an appropriate design process.

The Master's stage will require completion of a personal project.

Assessment

Assessments will take place during individual/ group presentations at interim stages and at the end of each module. Immediate verbal feedback is given to students during the interim stages and written feedback is given at the end of each module.

The MA in Film and Television: Research and Production places employability at the heart of the programme. Full-time study is on site in Stratford-upon-Avon and part-time students can choose to study the whole programme either on-site, primarily by online distance learning or a combination of the two. The schedule of delivery allows access to all modules through a range of modes over any three-year period, although some are not available to study via distance learning. The compulsory Pedagogy module, which is co-taught with the Royal Shakespeare Company, must be studied on-site due to its interactive nature.

This innovative Shakespeare Institute programme allows you to study the performance history but also the way in which Shakespeare’s plays have been performed through history, up to the modern moment. It encourages a historical approach to interpretation and styles of presentation and it promotes the value of close reading as the basis for evaluating the plays on the page, stage, and screen. You will have the opportunity to look at different productions and adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays in their historical, political, and cultural contexts and to think about the performance choices actors and directors make when approaching Shakespeare’s texts. You can also study how the textual history of Shakespeare’s plays influences performance today.

You can study on campus (full-time or part-time) or by distance learning (part-time only).

You will study two core modules:

Shakespeare’s Theatre
Research Skills

You will also choose four optional modules. Each module is assessed by one 4,000-word essay with the exception of: Research Skills which is assessed by 2 shorter assignments; and Shakespeare and Theatre Practice which is assessed by either two performance assignments and a 2,000-word research paper, or by one 4,000-word research paper. While completing all six taught modules will lead to a Diploma-level qualification, MA students will also complete a 15,000-word dissertation.

MA Professional Voice Practice

Students will gain highly specialised knowledge in a range of professional contexts and develop advanced expertise as a voice coach, teacher or performer. The course has been developed with the support of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

As an accredited Drama UK School, graduates have gone on to fulfil very exciting careers. Working professionally at prestigious organisations such as the RSC, The Royal Court, the Minack, The Cambridge Theatre, the Mountview Theatre Academy and ALRA.

You will explore in-depth the theory and practice of working with the voice. During your studies you will consider innovations in practice, and initiate research. You will be taught philosophical, ethical and aesthetic principles related to voice practice. Conducting private and self-directed study will widen your knowledge of the field and help you acquire a Master’s level understanding of professional voice practice.

Modules include:

• Phonetics and Voice Theory
• Singing
• Voice and Text
• Pedagogy
• Placement
• Research Methodology

The final research project may be either practice or dissertation based.

Employability

Graduates of the course will return to careers in the performance industry or in education with significantly enhanced skills in voice practice, which will increase employment opportunities and give graduates a competitive edge in a highly competitive field.
