Are you interested in understanding and critiquing the ways in which language is used in politics, the media, and intercultural communication?

This course is intended for those who wish to upgrade their professional and academic standing in discourse studies, linguistics, semiotics, and/or intercultural communication. It is particularly well-suited for students with backgrounds in linguistics, communication and related fields who want to move into higher education, journalism, and research into the role of communication in media, politics and society.

The programme combines a range of core modules and optional modules to ensure that you develop a solid foundation in the discipline area whilst also having the flexibility to pursue your own specific research interests.

You will study five core modules:

Describing Language
Discourse, Culture and Communication
Intercultural Communication
Social and Multimodal Aspects of Communication
Research Methods in Applied Linguistics

You will also choose one optional module and complete a 15,000-word dissertation.

In addition, there are two non-assessed components in the programme:

During the autumn term, all students will be offered preliminary training in corpus linguistics, introducing you to one or more of the main English language corpora (e.g. the British National Corpus) – invaluable collections of authentic language data against which theory, intuition and pedagogic materials can be measured.

You will also be offered a course in Academic Writing. Those whose first language is not English are particularly encouraged to follow this course.

You will do a total of six assessed pieces of coursework over the year. For assessment purposes, one of the modules you take during the spring term will be ‘linked’ with the Research Methods module – that is, you will produce a piece of work in the field covered by that module, but with a particular focus on research methods.

Our MA in Visual Communication course is delivered over one year for full-time students. You will study for three semesters, each semester takes place over a 15 week period.

The processes of design thinking - research, analysis, evaluation, creativity, craft and production - across all specialisms within visual communication are central to this course.

You'll have the chance to learn in our Research & Development labs that we've developed as a result of our partnerships with organisations, practitioners and industry. The labs allow you to take part in learning, teaching, research, innovation and professional development within visual communication.

The delivery of the programme is split into three stages: PG Cert, PG Dip and MA. Through the completion of modules you will attain your MA in Visual Communication.

The modules are designed to echo the three stages of development: your proficiency, your expertise and your mastery.

The PG Cert and PG Dip stages contain a 40 credit aspect and a 20 credit aspect. The Masters level is made up of a single 60 credit module.

Semester 1 PgCert: Analytical Practice; Dissemination - Case Study in Specialism.

The MA in Film and Television: Research and Production places employability at the heart of the programme. Primarily vocational and practical, the course caters for those with career interests in fashion communication and the promotion of fashion companies, goods, events and brands. Students will be actively encouraged to take part in debates about the professional, educational, political and cultural implications of fashion promotion in modern societies around the world. The course encourages different research methods to investigate the branding and promotion of fashion through marketing, advertising, events management, publicity or public relations.

As a graduate, individuals will be able to apply their knowledge and practical skills to fashion promotion, as well as sophisticated marketing and advertising concepts.

The course focuses on ability to develop and manage project proposals and studies related to commercial fashion, fashion communication and fashion promotion. Students can adopt either an entrepreneurial, academic or creative approach to their studies.

Example projects include fashion magazines or blogs, plans for fashion businesses, marketing strategies. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to undertake relevant career planning and research. A series of topical lectures are provided exploring major theories and debates related to the world of fashion and textiles. These are followed by talks from industry practitioners.

In your year on the programme, you’ll be planning digital marketing and advertising campaigns with leading digital agencies, developing brand and product promotions with prestigious clients, making mobile, social and virtual content with award-winning industry professionals and building new user journeys with emerging technologies and state-of-the –art resources.

You’ll get to work with top agency professionals and impressive client accounts on state-of-the-art campaigns as you tackle challenging briefs with our industry partners who include some of the worlds most important agencies: Unruly, Mediacom, Think Jam, Found, Red Bee Media, AMV XLAB and SapientNitro. And, you’ll be working in multidisciplinary teams to broaden your skill-sets as well as fine-tuning your own expertise with your MA and MSc peers.

Course Structure

You’ll spend the first nine months of your year progressing through the theory and practice of developing and delivering digital marketing and advertising campaigns to client briefs. The course encourages students to actively participate in debates about the professional, educational, political and cultural implications of beauty and cosmetics in modern societies around the world.

Students will also explore and use different research methods to investigate the branding and promotion of beauty services and cosmetics through marketing, advertising, events management, publicity or public relations.

This course will equip students with the latest knowledge, skills and resources to help them investigate areas of personal and work-based interest.

Students will develop their studies around personal career ambitions and enjoy visits to leading cosmetics and fashion events.

Graduates of the course will be able to apply their knowledge and practical skills to cosmetics branding and promotion, as well as sophisticated marketing and advertising concepts.

This course is divided into three trimesters to allow students to work towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's qualification. Each award is normally achieved within a 15 week study period (30 weeks for part-time students).

Modules

Stage 1 PgCert: Portfolio: Concepts and Treatments; Lecture and Seminar programme.

Stage 2 PgDip: Research Strategy; Portfolio: Short Projects.

Stage 3 Master's: Portfolio: Major project or dissertation.

Assessment

The course includes a mixture of practical projects and written work. Students will develop a portfolio of work that showcases their abilities and ideas and is executed and managed in a professional manner. At each stage, students will also write reflective reports that encourages development of a critical and contextual framework within which to understand individual practice and future career choices. Students are assessed using a mixture of tutorial reviews, project work submissions and oral exams.
