The Specializing Master Sustainable Design for Complexity is a First and Second-level Politecnico di Milano Specializing Master, born as an evolution of the five editions of the Specializing Master Sustainable Environments and Architecture to give designers, architects, and engineers bespoke, specialized training for ecologically and bioclimatically compatible projects in the built environment, integrating energy planning into new and existing architectural spaces.

Operating Context

Issues of complexity, nomadism, environmental and energy resources, the crisis for cities, and the gradual acceptance of ecological compatibility principles have brought the following needs to the fore:
a design and knowledge approach inspired by sustainable development;
innovation in the principles for settling and building cities and surrounding areas;
tight synergy with the potential technological innovation;
new skills on the part of designers in social, ecological, and energy fields;
finding new ways to design the land, its towns, and a sustainable built environment.
Relation to Job Market

Training is designed to build professionals and researchers:
who can interpret and manage the complexity of new land, town, and architecture scenarios;
who own the knowledge to use renewable energy resources and advanced technology properly;
who are optimally equipped to enhance the enormous potential of new nomadism.

Main Content

This Specializing Master seeks to build opportunities to acquire and experience the following features:
interpretative evaluation of the ways of interethnic living;
innovative approaches to understanding local context and transforming the natural and built environments;
knowledge of advanced technology and the use of alternative energy sources;
integrated design of photovoltaic and thermal solar technology;
integrated design of phytopurification, botanical land use and agronomy;
integrated design of re-naturalized rivers and farmland;
Innovation in the conceptions/concept of the structures.

Starting date: October 2016.

Objectives

The ID4A Master educational aim is to train professionals skilful at developing high quality projects in the field that ranges over the architectural layout and the efficiency of the building components.

The Master has also the objective of completing the training of designers, extending their expertise and problem solving skills with the culture and tools typical of Industrial Design. This aim is sought through an educational course that integrates theoretical knowledge with design studios, vocational activities such as visits to companies and practices and meeting with professionals, and the mandatory internship in architecture and design practices or companies of the building sector.

Job description

The Master course aims at answering to the ever-changing job market, that demands professionals able to work within contexts where multidisciplinary skills are useful and appreciated. The Master ID4A trains designers able to operate on different canvas and to tackle the challenges of the integrated design into diverse national and international realities of the building sector.

Subject content

The program includes three formative areas dealing with different aspects of Industrial Design:

• Design Culture: history and evolution of design, with special reference to aesthetic developments and to the ever closer relationship that has been developing over the years between product and build up space.

• Design Technology: study of the different technology, materials and tools needed in conceiving and realizing products that combine in a built up environment.

• Design Strategy: study of new construction processes, design innovation management and the introduction of design in the corporate strategies of companies in the sector.

A fourth area will be added to these: Design Studio, which will include practical work in design on various design themes such as:

• designing finished built-in products, in other words as integratable building components;

• designing electronic consumer products and space saving products that are highly intergratable with building manufacturing;

• designing serial construction products, e.g. for temporary structures and modular building solutions;

Such tasks may be individual or in teams and may envisage the participation of a leading companies in the sector of reference. The assessment achieved will constitute the basis for final marking.

Lessons will be held in English.

Master’s program scheduled to start in November 2016.

The Social and Collaborative Housing Specializing Master is structured so as to provide the skills shared by the various disciplines involved: architecture and design, social science, management, and finance. This assures a convergence of methods and tools to train professionals who can reach beyond their own specializations to understand and manage complexity, handling issues from the other fields that come together in creating social and collaborative housing.

One of the master’s program’s main goals is to teach how to plan and choreograph the moves needed to build a coordinated cultural event that can use today’s language to explain complex disciplines and values, reaching out to a broad audience.
In order for that to occur, the project requires both a solid grounding in the humanities to frame it in its historical and conceptual itinerary and the design input that gives sensory shape to the audience’s experience of the installation, brought by the faculty from the Politecnico di Milano Design School.
