Journeys may be made by foot, bicycle, private motorised transport and public transport. The varied means of transport available require infrastructure comprising either of public rights of way or dedicated systems such as railways, which need to be sized, designed, built and maintained.

Taken together, transport and its infrastructure has significant impacts on society and the environment and these impacts need to be estimated.

The MSc Transport Engineering and Planning provides systematic knowledge and skills in the analysis and design of transport systems which are grounded in advanced engineering science, statistical modelling and planning theory and practice.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Teaching and learning

The modules of this course involve a variety of teaching methods, including lectures and tutorials, requiring attendance, plus breakout sessions. These will involve group work and presentations. Case studies may be handed out for study in the evening and discussion the next day.

Leading academic staff and a number of specialist lecturers from the aviation industry teach each module over an intensive three-day period.

During each module, you are required to work in a small team to examine the relevant issues and to present results. Each module has been designed to develop a specific skill. There is a significant amount of independent study within each module for you to read literature related to the module you are studying. The online module page also provides blogs and forums, enabling you to interact with your lecturers and other students.

Assessment

Assessment of the taught modules is undertaken through a combination of the following elements:

  • Written assignments: between 1,500 and 3,000 words per module, focusing on topics relevant to the individual modules (both elective and core modules).
  • Written exam: lasting 90 minutes. This occurs at the end of the last day of the core module delivery. The essay questions are only revealed 'on the day', which students must complete without the use of any reference materials during the assessment.

Modules

This MSc comprises 180 credits – 120 credits of taught modules and the final project of 60 credits.  You must pass an Induction Workshop, then pass the three core modules of 15 credits each. You will then choose 5 electives of 15 credits, before taking the final project for 60 credits.

Core modules

You will begin the MSc Airport Management with the Induction Workshop, which is assessed by completing a 2,500 to 3,000-word piece of individual coursework, serving as the final acceptance assessment for the MSc Programme.

During your MSc, you will take the following core modules:

  • Airport Business Management (15 credits)
  • Human Resource Management (15 credits)
  • Final Project (60 credits)

The Final Project/Dissertation is undertaken by all students of the Airport Management Programme and must focus on an airport management topic. This is a substantial piece of writing, deriving from academic research that you have undertaken. The Dissertation is the result of your independent work carried out under the guidance of an appointed supervisor.

We explore air safety management from a broad perspective so you will be exposed to areas as diverse as human resources, regulation, and crisis management. The academic framework has been created by the industry for the industry. This means you learn from the former British Airways human resources director in one module, and the industry's crisis management expert in safety or the chief executive officer of a major maintenance facility in another.

The course is based on completing the Induction Workshop plus eight modules over one to five years, which are taught over three-day periods. Teaching takes place across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt.

Students also take on a project/dissertation in an air transport related subject, which is usually completed within six to twelve months. From developing new safety measures to social media marketing in the aviation world, students choose their own research focus and often use the project as a way into a new career.

Students who choose not to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme within the five years, receive a Postgraduate Certificate on successful completion of four modules, including two core modules, or a Postgraduate Diploma on successful completion of eight modules.

This programme is for those who have been working within the aviation industry (for at least two years).  Current students include pilots, air traffic controllers, maintenance staff, engineers and the majority have a license/professional education. We also welcome students with a military background. This Air Transport Management MSc programme is tailored towards those working who cannot attend regular university schedules.

This course is compatible with The MoD's Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS) - an initiative to promote lifelong learning amongst members of the UK Armed Forces. If you are/have been a member of the UK Armed Forces, you could be entitled to financial support to take this course.

Students who choose note to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme with the five years can receive a Postgraduate Certificate pending Programme Director approval.

We cover the full spectrum of a Master of Science education, adding Management modules for the future career in aviation. The dissertation at the end of the MSc programme gives each student the opportunity to demonstrate the new research and project management qualifications achieved through the programme.

The programme is based on the successful completion of the Induction Workshop which acts as an entry pathway to the MSc. The MSc consists of three core modules and 5 electives plus the project/dissertation. Each module is taught over a three day period across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt.

The dissertation at the end of the MSc programme gives each student the opportunity to demonstrate the new research and project management qualifications achieved through the programme.

This course develops your ability to initiate and implement advanced analysis and research in transport policy, planning and management. You will learn the techniques and methodologies you need to take decisions, or to provide the necessary information for others to take policy decisions. The MSc course has been running successfully for many years, and is offered by the Department of Planning and Transport. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and graduates are exempt from the Institute's exams. The Course also forms part of the pathway to the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification.

The course will enable you to understand the causes and motivations of personal travel and goods movement; to analyse transport problems and develop, and implement policies and measures for resolving such problems; to evaluate transport projects, plans and policies, taking into account the need for stakeholder participation and recognising the political, social, health, environmental and economic issues involved.

The MSc course balances theoretical and practical applications in the three separate components: core modules, option modules and a research dissertation.

Students take six taught modules in total (over one year on the full-time course, or two to three years on the block release part-time course) and complete a research dissertation. Email contact and tutorial support is provided between the module blocks along with guest lectures and workshop sessions for full-time students.

The block attendance mode for this course is not compatible with visa restrictions for international students. Therefore, this mode of attendance is not available for international students requiring a visa. The block mode of attendance is still available to UK and EU students. This course has been developed to meet the needs of graduates worldwide seeking to gain greater knowledge and experience of the air transport industry, and looking to progress into senior roles in management, operations and commercial planning of airlines, airports, government departments and aviation-related businesses such as aircraft manufacturing, finance and consultancy. It is designed to provide a strong theoretical and analytical basis, coupled with the application of many practical techniques and strategies.

The course builds on the successful series of aviation short courses that have attracted participants from around the globe to the University each year. The Department has a long-established interest in air transport research, consultancy and teaching, having been set up by the renowned aviation academic Professor Rigas Doganis some 40 years ago. The University's association with aviation goes back much further, however, as it was here in the 19th century that Sir George Cayley first demonstrated the principles of flight.

Career path

If you are a full-time student without a background in the air transport industry, you will be well placed to take up a junior position in a planning, management and operational role with airlines and airports after completing the course. You will also be well equipped for employment as an analyst with consultancies, government bodies and aircraft manufacturers.

If you have an industry background you should be able to return to your position with new skills and understanding, plus a greater maturity of approach. You will be well placed to move into senior managerial, policy or research functions.
