City’s MSc Health Policy is the ideal route for graduates looking to start, change or develop their career within the health policy field. It combines an international focus and academic rigour with the development of practical, transferable skills that can be applied in a wide range of real-world health policy, planning and management settings.

We welcome applications from graduates (UK or international) from any academic discipline. The course is also suitable for established professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, including:

Objectives

Health and health care policy are at the top of the political agenda around the world. People are living longer, consumers are expecting more from their health services and chronic illnesses are becoming prevalent. Medical technology is advancing rapidly, creating ever-increasing demand for the latest treatments.

Health policy affects and is affected by all of these factors. It aims to meet the growing challenges facing health systems by providing answers to such questions as:
-How can we best meet people’s changing health needs?
-How can we control spiralling health costs, while maintaining high quality and comprehensive health services?
-What is the most effective way of organising and paying for health care?
-How can we tackle inequalities in health and access to care?
-How can we measure and improve the performance of health systems?

City’s MSc in Health Policy gives you the knowledge and tools you need to understand, analyse and influence the health policy process, and to operate within an increasingly complex policy environment.

You will analyse the social, political and economic factors that affect policy at a local, national and international level. You will explore how and where policy is made, and who the key players are; and learn how to present your ideas clearly and persuasively to a range of influential stakeholders to bring about change.

Placements

You have the opportunity to do a placement, but it is not a formal requirement of the course. We encourage you to create your own. One recent student worked within the refugee camp in Calais alongside the NGO Doctors of the World as part of her dissertation research on refugee access to health care.

You will learn through a mix of lectures, class discussions and seminars, student presentations, case study analysis, interactive computer-based exercises, a virtual learning environment (Moodle) and self-directed reading.

City has an international reputation for academic excellence in the areas of health and food policy, health services research, health management, health economics and executive leadership across a broad range of professional disciplines. This programme has been developed in response to on-going work by the Department of Health to re-affirm the essential role of the school nurse and health visitor in delivering a universal and early intervention service to children, young people and their families.

This programme has been developed with local partner healthcare organisations. It is intended to meet the needs and expectations of the new agenda and make a difference to the health and well-being of individuals and communities. This programme leads to a nationally recognised qualification and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

This award winning programme gained the Innovations in Occupational Health Award in 2011. It is led by Anne Harriss who was named Occupational Health Nurse of the Year in 2011. Anne and a programme graduate then gained the 2013 Innovations in Occupational Health. In the same year Anne achieved Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. In 2016 Anne was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing, the highest award the College can bestow.

Occupational health (OH) nursing is a distinct specialty within the family of public health nursing. OH nurses practice in a wide diversity of settings within both the public and private sectors. In addition to gaining employment within the NHS, graduates of programmes offered by LSBU have gained employment with international airlines, the financial services sector, legal practices and manufacturing industries. Others have set up their own successful consultancies.

The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and you spend 50% of the course in an OH practice setting. Shared learning with other practitioners who work in the OH setting is encouraged.

Should I take the BSc (Hons) or the PgDip qualification?
Depending on the level of your existing qualifications you will either undertake the BSc (Hons) course, or the PgDip qualification. If you qualified as a nurse with a Bachelors Degree you should take this course - the PgDip. If you qualified as a nurse with an Undergraduate Diploma you should take the BSc (Hons) Occupational Health Nursing (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) programme. The content of the courses is the same.

Modules

The degree course consists of six modules each worth 20 credit points. Of these; one is a research module and is taught across a range of primary care programmes. The remaining five are OH pathway specific. Some modules are available on a standalone basis. This is subject to availability - priority for places on these units is given to those enrolling on the entire degree course.

Full-time

The full-time course will be completed within one year of study.

Timetable

Full-time students attend for two days each week studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1 modules on one day and Assessing risk 2 on the second day of attendance.

Part-time students attend for one day each week and join the full-time cohort studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1. This programme recruits from a wide geographical area. Past students have travelled from as far afield as Manchester, Cornwall, Norfolk and Suffolk. In order to facilitate the travel needs of such students, the first lecture of the day is scheduled to commence at 10.00am and all lectures are completed by 5.00pm.

Teaching and learning

Each module equates to 200 hours of student effort, 36 hours of which take place in the classroom. This is supplemented with blended learning initiatives including electronic learning activities and workplace visits.

Teaching consists of formal lectures, seminars, group work and field work activities including a risk assessment activity which takes place in the Palm House of Kew Gardens.

A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, case studies, reports, a professional practice portfolio and one examination.

Placements

It is a Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) requirement that you must gain experience in the OH practice setting throughout your studies. This can be achieved through employment in an OH service or as a result of a practice placement undertaken on an unpaid basis. In order that you gain a placement appropriate to your learning needs and personal circumstances. This experience is negotiated and secured by the student.

Jo-Anne Kitney an OH graduate and MD of Kitney Occupational Health and Safety in Brisbane, Queensland is an honorary senior lecturer. Jo-Anne offers Skype lectures, webinars, and career coaching opportunities to our students. Prof Diana Kloss barrister, employment tribunal judge and Chair of the Council for Work and Health is also a frequent contributor to our programme. It is envisaged that Chris Packham, MD of Enviroderm, will teach about Skin Protection on the programme this academic year.

About mental health nursing

The focus of mental health nursing is on the person, who is placed at the centre of care. Mental health nurses work in partnership with people to enable them to identify strategies for coping and overcoming their illness. The focus of mental health nursing is on recovery enabling the person to attain a desired quality of life. Mental health nurses work to challenge out of date views regarding mental illness and help service users cope with the stigma that is still present in today's society.

What will you study?

Mental health nursing is underpinned by the notion of 'recovery', and you work collaboratively with service users to build on their strengths and manage their problems to encourage the best quality of life.

The first year is divided into two parts. In part one you will undertake a bridging module introducing you to the foundations of nursing and healthcare for a graduate nurse. In part two you will look at the context of nursing within a variety of client groups within your specific field of nursing. General nursing topics are studied alongside subjects tailored to mental health nursing.

In your second year (part three) you will learn about the complexities of nursing at an individual and organisational level as well as preparing for your transition to registered nurse.

Applicants will want to develop their practice in the sphere of district nursing, health visiting or school nursing, as well as gain an academic qualification which can lead to an MSc.

Objectives

The programme offers registered nurses and midwives an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and broaden their skills to improve health within communities. City offers the three specialist community practitioner routes in District Nursing, Health Visiting and School Nursing.

The course aims to support you to:
-Acquire a deep and systematic understanding of the professional and technical skills and knowledge of public health policy, practice, care delivery and service development.
-Develop knowledge, skills and professional competencies.
-Critically analyse social and cultural perspectives of public health, health and disease and the influence they have on judgements and decisions for practice, practice development and service delivery.
-Promote multi-agency and multi-disciplinary working in relation to public health practice.
-Critically analyse, synthesise and apply Specialist Public Health Nursing or Primary Care Nursing knowledge, policy and practice to work in different settings.
-Develop skills and knowledge to practise autonomously and organise and appraise practice and learning.
-Achieve the competency to prescribe from the community practitioner formulary for nurse prescribers.

Placements

Practice is an integral part of the programme. In the practice setting, you will work alongside a practice teacher or practice teacher and mentor from the specific sphere of practice, while completing learning activities and a practice assessment document.

You are required to undertake 15 days additional experience in an area of, or that may be of, responsibility, even if not central to the defined area of practice. This can be anywhere in the world. Past students have visited Denmark and Scotland, for example, as well as working elsewhere in London. They have worked with food banks, specialist nurses, environmental health officers and been involved in community development projects.

For the final ten weeks of the programme, you will work consistently in practice, consolidating your learning.

During your placement, you will have at least three visits from your link lecturer (who is also your personal tutor) to support learning in practice and facilitate theory- practice development.

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated six-bed high-dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium-fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Sciences is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio - City TECS. City TECS is a specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies, providing you with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies while you study.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is facilitated by qualified educators, the majority of whom are registrants from the appropriate sphere of practice. In becoming a self-critical, lifelong, reflective learner, you will identify your learning needs and work towards meeting these.

Learning and teaching strategies will include formal lectures, seminars, student-led seminars, group projects, simulated practice, negotiated learning, e-learning, self-directed learning and practice-based activities.

This programme will generally include 50 organised learning days, most of which will be campus-based and 107 practice days of different sorts (supervised, alternative and consolidated). There are 57 study days when you are expected to undertake guided independent study.

As a paid employee, you are expected to attend all timetabled classes and placement learning experiences.

This programme focuses on public health nursing and prepares qualified nurses for registration on the Social Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register. Applicants will choose a defined area of practice either health visiting or school nursing. Both of these pathways promote the health of individuals, groups and populations and prevent ill health through taking a pro-active approach to practice.

Through partnership working, health visitors and school nurses seek to enable clients to take control of their lives whilst safeguarding vulnerable individuals and populations. Public health work that promotes social inclusion and reduces inequalities in health is central to practice. You will be encouraged to identify your learning needs in professional practice, in partnership with your practice teacher, and to develop competencies in areas that will enable you to meet the course learning outcomes. You will be allocated a personal tutor in the University who will help provide academic and professional support whilst you are a student.

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 7,500 words. An oral presentation and a lay summary of 500 words are also required. The dissertation can include primary research, secondary data analysis, a literature review or a project proposal in a field related to population health.

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. Nursing skills are taught and assessed in four laboratories. Learning clinical skills in the laboratories ensures that students develop competence in a safe, protected environment. In order to develop multi-professional and collaborative working, there is shared learning between nursing and midwifery students in areas such as biological and social sciences, informatics, research, ethics, health policy and management.

This programme offers both practice and theoretical learning in a variety of institutional and community settings. For adult nursing, placements are in hospitals and the local community, such as GP practices and with community nurses and health visitors. Adult nursing is a person-centred profession with the primary aim of promoting the wellbeing and social inclusion of all people through improving or maintaining physical and mental health (Department of Health, 2010). Adult nurses provide care for people over the age of 18 and increasingly for older people with complex conditions. They may also care for people with a mental health, learning disability or children. Adult nurses work in a range of settings including A&E, critical care, medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation units, GP practices, healthcare centres, hospices and in people's own homes.

What will you study?

The first year is divided into two parts. In part one you will undertake a bridging module introducing you to the foundations of nursing and healthcare. In part two you will look at the context of nursing within a variety of client groups within your specific field of nursing.
In your second year (part three) you will learn about the complexities of nursing at an individual and organisational level as well as preparing for your transition to registered nurse.

This is a CPD programme for registered nurses.

Health Visiting consists of developing, leading and managing activities that aim to promote health and social well-being, prevent health breakdown and ameliorate ill health through working with individuals, families, groups and communities. Through partnership working, health visitors seek to enable clients to take control of their lives whilst protecting vulnerable members of society. Public health work that promotes social inclusion and reduces inequalities in health is central to health visiting practice.

The course focuses on promoting the health of children, families and groups in a community setting. It considers the issues involved in safeguarding the health of vulnerable children, families and populations. The overall aim is to develop an effective practitioner who is able to identify actual and potential health needs, stimulate an awareness of health needs, facilitate evidence based health enhancing activities and influence policy at all levels.

Should I take the BSc (Hons) or the PgDip qualification?
Depending on the level of your existing qualifications you will either undertake the BSc (Hons) course, or the PgDip qualification. If you qualified as a nurse with a Bachelors degree you should take this course - the PgDip. If you qualified as a nurse with an undergraduate Diploma you should take the BSc (Hons) Health Visiting (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) programme.
