The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) at QMUL combines the expertise of sports medicine clinicians, surgeons, engineers and sports scientists with state-of-the-art physiological testing and motion analysis equipment. This collaborative venture offers clinical, educational, research and athlete support service applications in the laboratory or field based settings.

The capabilities of the HPL can be broadly divided into two areas: musculoskeletal biomechanics and physiological testing.

Musculoskeletal biomechanics
The HPL carries 4 Codamotion Cx1 infra-red scanning units that are used extensively for 3-dimensional motion analysis. This system is fully integrated with 2 ground embedded Kistler force plates and a 16 channel wireless EMG system. The integration of these systems allows for full analysis of movement, forces associated with movement and measuring muscular effort during movement. In addition, the HPL also boasts a 64 channel EMG system for multichannel work and an isokinetic dynamometer, which can be used for both research and rehabilitation.

Physiological testing
Detailed analysis of pulmonary gas exchange can be made using an online gas analysis system, in addition to cardiac monitoring using a 12-lead ECG system, during exercise on a treadmill or the electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer. Measures can also be made out in the field, from simple tests of flexibility, strength, speed, power and cardiorespiratory fitness, to comprehensive measurement of expired air using the portable on-line gas analysis system.

The MSc and Diploma
The MSc is a 3-year 180 credit MSc, including a 60 credit 10000+/- 500 word dissertation in year 3. It offers two years of structured web based teaching via an online learning platform. For students who wish not to complete a dissertation in year 3, a 2-year Diploma is offered based on the lectures, tutorials and course work.

This course commences September 2017
The course is online, allowing you to study at your own pace and in your own time, enabling you to continue with your work commitments. It provides an excellent structured learning platform for trainees and specialists to develop skills in this area. Lectures are delivered by leading experts in the field with the same lecturer/course leads offering weekly tutorials.

In the first two years the course offers 8 modules covering different areas of critical care. Each of the eight modules runs over 10 weeks, In year 3 the 60-credit dissertation is completed by students completing the MSc.

This MSc is designed to give clinicians and practitioners a deeper understanding of sports medicine, sports injuries and exercise medicine. The programme covers the evidence-based management of sports medicine and musculoskeletal injuries, and emphasises the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. This MSc can be taken full time over one year, part-time over two years, or via flexible distance learning.

Degree information

The programme focuses on sports injuries and their prevention and treatment, and provides a thorough grounding in relevant areas of anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology and psychology, as well as the fundamentals of exercise in maintaining and improving health. Students develop essential research skills through an independent research project.

All students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of seven core modules (105 credits), one optional module (15 credits) and a research project (60 credits). Clinical sessions are spread over the year: commitment is equivalent to one half-day per week over three 12-week semesters. Clinic options include sports injury, physiotherapy and podiatry, exercise testing, and team visits.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project from a diverse range of available topics, which culminates in a dissertation, an oral examination and a presentation.

Teaching and learning
Teaching is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, hands-on practical sessions, small group seminars, clinics and field trips, and will be delivered by lecturers who are highly experienced in their field. Up-to-date, evidence-based practice will be emphasised throughout and students' contribution through discussion is considered key. Assessment is through written examination, presentations, coursework and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), as well as the dissertation and viva voce (oral) examination.

You will develop your diagnostic and case formulation skills and also learn the materia medica and formulae of Chinese herbal medicine. Phytochemistry and pharmacokinetics are integrated into the understanding of the energetic interactions of herbs. Extensive practice with patients will take place in our on-site teaching clinic where theory is deconstructed and applied. Overview

Regenerative medicine is an interdisciplinary field, which aims to repair diseased or damaged tissues using biological or cell-based technologies. It is a rapidly growing area of biomedical research that encompasses stem cell biology, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and nanotechnology. This MSc course provides advanced, multi-disciplinary training in the scientific principles and clinical applications of regenerative medicine, and is delivered jointly by Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Engineering and Materials Science.

Taught modules will develop a strong scientific foundation in the biology of stem cells and regeneration and the fundamental principles of biomaterials, tissue engineering and cellular reprogramming. Through an intensive 12-week research project, students will then gain hands on experience applying these concepts to problems in human health and the development of novel regenerative technologies.

Upon completion of the MSc in Regenerative Medicine, students will be well placed for further training at the PhD level or professional careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

The MSc in Regenerative Medicine is a one year, full-time programme. Students are required to complete 180 credits comprising taught and research modules.

Entry requirements
As a multi-disciplinary course, the MSc is appropriate for a wide range of students. Graduates with degrees in biological sciences or medicine will gain an in-depth understanding of the cellular and molecular aspects of regenerative medicine as well as an introduction to the interdisciplinary fields of biomaterials and tissue engineering. Similarly, students with a physical sciences background will have the opportunity to broaden their experiences and acquire new skills in the biological sciences.
Admission to the course is selective, and based upon academic credentials, research experience, and motivation. The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and skills in Philosophy of Medicine and Psychiatry. They will also have the opportunity to study other areas of Philosophy, selected from a broad range of modules, covering all areas of the subject. Those converting in from other subjects at undergraduate level will be strongly encouraged to take 'General Philosophy' as one of their options.

The programme has three elements:

(i) Two core modules, worth 20 credits each: Philosophy of Medicine and Perspectives on Death & Killing
(ii) Dissertation of around 10,000 words, on a topic in the philosophy of medicine, worth 60 credits.
(iii) Around four modules chosen from the MA courses in Philosophy, including General Philosophy, totalling 80 credits (with permission, one course may be taken outside the Department).

All students, including part-time students, should ensure that they are available to attend seminars at least two days a week.

- Course purpose -

The programme is geared equally to students who already have some training in Philosophy and to those who wish to convert into the field after pursuing another subject at undergraduate level (which may be, but need not be, Medicine). However, traditional practice also utilises other techniques such as moxibustion and cupping. The Chinese word for acupuncture is zhenjiu; literally needle and moxibustion. It originated In China around three thousand years ago and soon spread to other countries in Asia such as Japan and Korea. Acupuncture is now widely used around the world.

This course provides a strong foundation in the theory and application of acupuncture, as well as extensive clinical experience and a grounding in Chinese language and culture. Over the four year course, you'll also gain a thorough understanding of western bio-medical sciences and the skills to be a reflective and professional practitioner. Research will play an important role in the future development of the profession of acupuncture and this programme is designed to equip you with excellent research skills.

Modules covering Chinese medicine, language and culture will be taught by experienced lecturers from China. You'll benefit from this wealth of clinical experience and extensive knowledge of the various traditions and historical developments in Chinese medicine. You'll also learn from practitioners based in the UK to gain a more complete picture and understanding of the skills required to be a professional acupuncturist in the West.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

- understand and describe the causation, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and control of the major parasitic, bacterial, and viral diseases of developing countries

- demonstrate knowledge and skills in diagnostic parasitology and other simple laboratory methods

Term 1:

Terms 2 and 3:
Students take a total of five study modules, one from each timetable slot (Slot 1, Slot 2 etc.). During the summer months (July - August), students complete a research project in a subject of their choice, for submission by early September. Projects may involve writing up and analysing work carried out before coming to the School, a literature review, or a research study proposal. Some students gather data overseas or in the UK for analysis within the project. Such projects require early planning.

Students undertaking projects overseas will require additional funding of up to £1,500 to cover costs involved. The majority of students who undertake projects abroad receive financial support for flights from the School's trust funds set up for this purpose.

Dissertation/research project
All MSc students undertake a research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 6,000–7,000 words, a presentation and a viva.

Teaching and learning
The delivery of the programme is through lectures, tutorials or workshops. Performing arts clinics and performance settings when possible are also included in the programme. Details about the lecturers and tutors can be found here.

Assessment is through coursework, written examinations and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Careers

Graduates gain in-depth knowledge of the diverse field of performing arts medicine. Their specialised skills can be incorporated in their own professional practice or they can participate in performing arts clinics in various settings e.g. conservatoires, orchestras, music or dance colleges.

Graduates' knowledge and experience is valued and they may be invited as educators and trainers in performing arts medicine and will become members of an ever-growing medical community with common interest in the wellbeing of the performer.

Graduates who have aspirations for further academic study and research activity, such as progressing to PhD, will receive appropriate guidance.

Employability
Assessing a performing artist requires specialised skills and the ability to associate health issues with the particular artistic activity. The course provides its students with broad knowledge of the art forms and their demands on the performer and how these impact on their wellbeing. With focused tutorials and real life scenarios the student builds the confidence to assess and diagnose or refer appropriately as well as to monitor rehabilitation and return to performance. This programme pathway is designed for students with a developing interest in radiation physics, both ionising and non-ionising, that underpins many of the imaging and treatment technologies applied in modern medicine. Students gain an understanding of scientific principles and practices that are used in hospitals, industries and research laboratories through lectures, problem-solving sessions, a research project and collaborative work.

Degree information

Students study the physics theory and practice that underpins modern medicine, and learn to apply their knowledge to established and emerging technologies in medical science. The programme covers the applications of both ionising and non-ionising radiation to the diagnosis and treatment of human disease and disorder, and includes research project, workplace skills development and computational skills needed to apply this theory into practice.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of seven core modules (105 credits), one optional module (15 credits), and a research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma of eight modules (120 credits) is offered.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project within the broad area of Physics and Engineering in Medicine which culminates in a report up to 10,000 words, a poster and an oral examination.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, tutorials, assignments and a research project. Lecturers are drawn from UCL and from London teaching hospitals including UCLH, St. Bartholomew's, and the Royal Free Hospital. Assessment is through supervised examination, coursework and assignments, a research dissertation and an oral examination.

Careers

A large percentage of graduates from the MSc continue on to PhD study, often in one of the nine research groups within the department, as a reult of the skills and knowledge they acquire on the programme. Other graduates commence or resume training or employment within the heaalthcare sector in hospitals or industry, both within the UK and abroad.

Postgraduate study within the department offers the chance to develop important skills and acquire new knowledge through involvement with a team of scientists or engineers working in a world-leading research group. Graduates complete their study having gained new scientific or engineering skills applied to solving problems at the forefront of human endeavour. The spectrum of medical physics activities undertaken in UCL Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering is probably the broadest of any in the United Kingdom. The department is widely acknowledged as an internationally leading centre of excellence and students on this programme receive comprehensive training in the latest methodologies and technologies from leaders in the field.

The department operates alongside the NHS department which provides the medical physics and clinical engineering services for the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as well as undertaking industrial contract research and technology transfer. The department is also a collaborator in the nearby London Proton Therapy Centre, currently under construction.

Students have access to a wide range of workshop, laboratory, teaching and clinical facilities in the department and associated hospitals. A large range of scientific equipment is available for research involving nuclear magnetic resonance, optics, acoustics, X-rays, radiation dosimetry, and implant development.
