This course builds on typical undergraduate computing courses studied at level 4 and 5 or equivalent ( such as HND) by offering a level 6 entry route 'integrated' to a level 7 Masters course.

The two year combination provides a route to develop new knowledge and skills in areas critical to the introduction and success of modern information systems for enterprises. The course also provides a route for people with other backgrounds and experience to engage with the world of information systems. It helps you gain a full understanding of how information systems are designed and constructed, and of the impact of technology and its integration into an organisation. It will also give you the skills you need to work effectively in a business-consulting environment, and provide a solid basis for research.

To qualify for the award of MSc Information Systems (Integrated), candidates on the integrated pathway must study five level 6 modules consisting of 20 credits each and two 10 credits each, and six level 7 modules consisting of 20 credits and a 60 credits dissertation module.

Teaching and learning

Taught modules

Taught modules are delivered through a series of lectures together with either tutorials or laboratory sessions. Tutorials help you develop the skills to apply the concepts we have covered in the lectures. We normally achieve this through practical problem-solving contexts or case studies.

Laboratory sessions

Laboratory sessions give you the opportunity to apply concepts and techniques using state-of-the-art software, environments and development tools.

Moodle

City's online learning environment, Moodle, contains resources for each of the modules from lecture notes and lab materials, to coursework feedback, model answers, and an interactive discussion forum.

Assessment

You will study independently and complete coursework for each module. Modules are assessed through a combination of written examinations, coursework, group work and presentations.

Individual project

The individual project is a substantial task. It is your opportunity to develop an autonomous research-related topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff. This is the moment when you can apply your learning to solve a real-world information system or information management problem. At the end of the project you will submit a substantial MSc project report, which becomes the mode of assessment for this part of the programme.

Students successfully completing eight modules and the dissertation will be awarded 180 credits and a Master’s level qualification. Alternatively, students who do not complete the dissertation but have successfully completed eight modules will be awarded 120 credits and a postgraduate diploma. Successful completion of four modules (60 credits) will lead to the award of a postgraduate certificate.

Modules

The postgraduate Information Systems & Technology programme is made up of five core modules, three elective modules and a final project. All the electives are studied in the second term. You will take core and elective modules in three main streams: information, systems and technology. The third term is reserved for the project.

Modules include hands-on lab-based tutorials, group work seminars and presentations. You will learn technical skills in SQL, JavaScript and PhP, as well as design skills using UML. You can pursue a practical MSc project in an application area of your choice.

About this degree

This course addresses the need to propel information-gathering and data organisation, and exploit potential information and knowledge hidden in routinely collected data to improve decision-making. The course, which builds on the strength of two successful courses on data mining and on decision sciences, is more technology focused, and stretches the data mining and decision sciences theme to the broader agenda of business intelligence.

You will focus on developing solutions to real-world problems associated with the changing nature of IT infrastructure and increasing volumes of data, through the use of applications and case studies, while gaining a deep appreciation of the underlying models and techniques. You will also gain a greater understanding of the impact technological advances have on nature and practices adopted within the business intelligence and analytics practices, and know how to adapt to these changes.

Embedded into the course are two key themes. The first will help you to develop your skills in the use and application of various technologies, architectures, techniques, tools and methods. These include warehousing and data mining, distributed data management, and the technologies, architectures, and appropriate middleware and infrastructures supporting application layers. The second theme will enhance your knowledge of algorithms and the quantitative techniques suitable for analysing and mining data and developing decision models in a broad range of application areas. The project consolidates the taught subjects covered, while giving you the opportunity to pursue in-depth study in your chosen area.

Teaching approaches include lectures, tutorials, seminars and practical sessions. You will also learn through extensive course work, class presentations, group research work, and the use of a range of industry standard software such as R, Python, Simul8, Palisade Decision Tools, Hadoop and Oracle.

Taught modules may be assessed entirely through course work, or may include a two-hour exam at the end of the year.

This programme is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, for fully meeting the further learning educational requirement for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status and for partially satisfying the underpinning knowledge requirements set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and the Science Council for Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (CEng or IEng) status. Note that there are additional requirements, including work experience, to achieve full CITP, CEng, or IEng status. Graduates of this accredited degree will also be eligible for professional membership of BCS (MBCS).

About this degree

This is a flexible programme of study combining information disciplines, information technology, leadership, management and professional skills. The programme is tailored to individual needs, closely related to students' current or future employment or research goals. Through research skills classes and a substantial research project, students develop skills for further study and career development.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four optional modules (60 credits) and a research dissertation (120 credits).

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project in an applied or theoretical area of information work, which culminates in a dissertation of 25,000 words.

Teaching and learning

Taught modules are delivered through lectures, seminars, groupwork and practicals. Research skills are developed through classes within the department and students are encouraged to take courses run by UCL Doctoral School. Assessment is through a mixture of essays, reports, examination and practical assignments and by the dissertation and viva voce.

Guided by academics with a wealth of industrial experience, this is an intensive MSc programme for highly motivated graduates of any discipline with little prior experience of computer science.

Structure

MSc Computing and Information Systems is currently available for one year full-time study, two years part-time study.

Full-time

Undertaking a masters programme is a serious commitment, with weekly contact hours being in addition to numerous hours of independent learning and research needed to progress at the required level. When coursework or examination deadlines are approaching independent learning hours may need to increase significantly. Please contact the course convenor for precise information on the number of contact hours per week for this programme.

Part-time

Part-time study options often mean that the number of modules taken is reduced per semester, with the full modules required to complete the programme spread over two academic years. Teaching is generally done during the day and part-time students should contact the course convenor to get an idea of when these teaching hours are likely to take place. Timetables are likely to be finalised in September but you may be able to gain an expectation of what will be required.

We regret that, due to complex timetabling constraints, we are not able to guarantee that lectures and labs for part time students will be limited to two days per week, neither do we currently support any evening classes. The MSc Management of Information Systems and Digital Innovation (MISDI) programme is an intellectually rigourous, innovative, interdisciplinary programme that integrates established knowledge on the development and management of information systems with the critical study of emerging domains of digital innovation, such as social networking, crowdsourcing and big data.

We study digital innovation in business and government across the world. The internet and mobile technologies are drastically changing the ways we create and share information, and open opportunities for new business models, new forms of governance, and new ways for public engagement.
