The Computer Science MSc provides a balance between computer science theory and practical software engineering skills, including teamwork for industrial or research clients. Graduates find employment in the IT industry, or complement their first degree subject with computer science knowledge, leading to interdisciplinary industrial positions and PhD research.

About this degree

You will learn fundamental aspects of how computers work by taking modules in computer architecture, operating systems, compilers, data structures and algorithms. You will also gain practical knowledge in areas such as human-computer interaction, App design, databases and software engineering. You will develop programming skills in modern languages, such as object-oriented Java for Android development. 

Team working, project planning and communication skills are developed by working in small groups developing software for real industrial and research clients. Optional modules allow specialisation in subjects such as functional programming, computer music, entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a research project (60 credits).

Dissertation/report

During the summer students will undertake a work placement with a UCL industrial partner. The research and data analysis conducted during this placement will form the basis of a 10,000-word dissertation.

This rapidly expanding area includes machine learning, deep learning, large-scale data analysis and has applications in e-commerce, search/information retrieval, natural language modelling, finance, bioinformatics and related areas in artificial intelligence.

To be awarded a PhD, your research work must result in a significant original contribution to the field of study (although this is not a requirement of the MPhil). You initially register for an MPhil degree, with transfer to PhD after satisfactorily completing an initial period of study and if it seems likely that your thesis will contain significant original work.

Students who successfully complete this MPhil or PhD degree will have gained expert knowledge in their chosen research area and the ability to perform research-led activities in a broader context. In addition, students who successfully complete the PhD degree will have gained the ability to identify and solve complex problems arising in their chosen research area, and will have made a substantial original contribution to this area.

The industrial placement currently takes place towards the end of the first year for a maximum of 12 months. It is the student’s responsibility to secure their placement, the school will offer guidance and support in finding and securing the placement but the onus is on the student to secure the job and arrange the details of the placement.

Currently if you are not able to secure a placement by the end of your second semester we will transfer you onto the 1 year FT taught programme without the Industrial Experience, this change would also be applied to any visa if you were here on a student visa.

The placement is currently undertaken between the taught component and the project. This will provide you with the opportunity to apply the key technical knowledge and skills that you have learnt in your taught modules, and will enable you to gain a better understanding of your own abilities, aptitudes, attitudes and employment potential. The module is only open to students enrolled on a programme of study with integrated placement.

Our MSc in Computer Science by Research involves an extended (one-year) individual research project carried out as part of one of our established research groups, combined with selected taught modules.

This programme offers you the chance to undertake an advanced masters programme through an extended research project. The programme is suitable for outstanding students who have an interest in advanced research-based study in one of our research specialisms: Computer Vision; Interaction, Media and Communication; Risk Information Management; Computer Science Theory.

The MSc by Research programme will give you solid theoretical and practical research competences in your chosen field of study and will enhance your employability. Successful completion of the programme may also provide a route to further study at doctoral level or for a research and development position in industry.
Programme outline

You will join one of our research groups, taking four selected taught modules and completing an extended research project. You will have the opportunity to develop further research and technical skills and to be able to demonstrate a level of independence that is greater than developed on a purely taught programme.
Assessment

All students are required to take written examinations in May/June. The MSc requires that a satisfactory research project should be completed. A mark of 50 per cent or more must be attained in all components.

The MSc by Research (Computer Science) matches up students with experts in one of six research disciplines for one year of intensive supervised training. The MSc also offers the opportunity for industrial support and collaboration.

Please note: this is NOT a taught degree programme.

The programme is aimed at recent graduates who have achieved a good first degree and are looking for the opportunity to do in depth research in a chosen topic under the guidance of an expert in the field. We also expect this programme to be of interest to people wishing to return to academic studies after a period of employment. The emphasis is on quality students who will be receiving expert supervision.

The programme will include regular supervision of research work, and advanced course material delivered mainly through tutorial sessions, plus opportunities to take supplementary taught courses, appropriate to individual student needs. Assessment will be based primarily on the chosen research project.

Programme strands

These strands coincide with fundamental areas of research in Computer Science, in which the Department's contribution has been internationally recognised:

- Machine Learning
- Constraints
- Discrete Optimisation
- Programming Languages and Compilers
- Bioinformatics (Biological Sequence Analysis)
- Intelligent Agents and Multi-agent Systems

Applicants will be accepted for one of these six basic strands, each of which includes many different possible research opportunities, and students will choose a research topic in consultation with their supervisor during their first term.

- A significant research component. This will begin in January and run through to the end of the programme in September

- Where appropriate, basic background material in lectured modules

Our MPhil/PhD programme in computer science offers you the opportunity to participate fully in the highly interdisciplinary research environment of our department and of the College as a whole.

We aim for all our students to produce innovative ideas and to develop those ideas into fully-fledged research results and software and hardware systems, working within the creative atmosphere of our department.

We currently offer MPhil/PhD supervision in many areas of computing, including:

  • computational creativity
  • computer vision and audition
  • interactions between art, media and technology
  • adaptive hypermedia systems
  • artificial intelligence

We welcome outstanding applications to study and perform research in any aspect of computer science, and strongly encourage you to contact members of staff with overlapping research interests to discuss your research proposal in the first instance; if you are unsure who to talk to, please contact the Postgraduate Tutor listed below with a description of your interests.

We provide you with office space and computer equipment along with access to computer labs and other facilities, in addition to resources and facilities made available by the College and support provided by the Research Office.

The department and the College provide training in research methods and in technical skills; we have a number of regular research meetings and seminars, from formal lectures to more informal workshops and discussion groups, and you are encouraged to present your work to the department at least once a year. There are also opportunities for you to participate in the teaching activities of the department. 

Assessment will be by written thesis (up to 100,000 words) and viva voce.
