Degree information

Students of clinical paediatric neuropsychology develop an understanding of the techniques, methods and contemporary findings in the field. They are trained to interpret clinical case presentations within the context of current scientific findings of developmental brain-behaviour relationships and gain knowledge of the major professional, ethical and service delivery issues in assessment and rehabilitative work.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full time nine months and part-time two years) is offered. There are no optional modules for this programme.

Recent years have been characterised by a rapid development of functional imaging technology, with increasing availability worldwide of high-resolution scanners for research and clinical applications. Functional brain imaging requires an understanding of current concepts in cognitive neuroscience and psychology, as well as a basic appreciation of neuroimaging techniques and of the mathematical and statistical foundations for data analysis.

The rapid development of functional imaging technology and research has contributed to the call for improved education and training in functional imaging. Within this context the aim of the programme is to provide a strong theoretical and practical introduction to the world of neuroimaging research. It will equip students with a range of practical research skills to enable them to successfully complete research of this kind, either as part of a research team or as an individual.

The course will also provide the necessary training in safety and in the rules of scanner operation. This will allow students to conduct a neuroimaging research project under the supervision of an Authorised User on Brunel’s 3T scanner, or else to conduct a project in one of its related ERP imaging or psychological laboratory facilities.

Assessment
Assessment is by coursework, one multiple choice exam and a final research project. Under the supervision of one of the Centre for Cognition and Neuroimaging’s research team, students will conduct a functional imaging experiment. This may involve use of the in-house EEG or fMRI facilities.

Careers
The MSc in Functional Neuroimaging is an invaluable companion or prelude to a research degree or research position in functional neuroimaging, one of the most rapidly growing fields of scientific research. Academic or research positions include:
MPhil/PhD in neuroimaging or related subjects; Research Assistant on a neuroscience project, or a related project in psychology or biology. Imaging now has applications from the physical sciences to projects in economics and the social sciences; Technical Assistant in functional neuroimaging. Non-academic positions include: any occupation that requires a higher level of analytical, technical and presentation skills than can be offered by a graduate in social sciences.

Our Clinical Neuroscience course enables trainees in neurology, psychiatry and related health-care disciplines to study the anatomical, physiological and pathological basis of symptoms and signs of brain disorders. It will provide you with in-depth knowledge and skills related to specialist clinical practice and will systematically integrate advances in genetics, molecular neuroscience, electrophysiology and neuroimaging into clinical practice. The Neuroimaging course aims to train the neuroimaging researchers of tomorrow by focusing on teaching you the scientific and methodological aspects of neuroimaging techniques in parallel to their application to psychiatry, neurology, psychology, clinical psychology, neuroscience, and beyond.

In addition to theoretical approaches, our course has a strong applied element, which will allow you to gain practical experience of scanning techniques, with a focus on the skills needed to run a scanning session and to analyse and interpret the data produced. It also includes visits to other centres providing PET, MEG and NIRS among other imaging techniques

- Course purpose -

Through this programme, the Department of Neuroimaging aims to apply its collective expertise to the development of the next generation of Neuroimaging specialists through the teaching of both the scientific and methodological aspects of neuroimaging techniques and applications. The programme is aimed at an inclusive audience, but would be of particular interest to mathematicians, engineers, physicists, psychologists, radiographers, and medical professionals.

- Course format and assessment -

The first three modules, "Introduction to Neuroimaging", "Neuroimaging Acquisition and Analysis" and "Applications of Neuroimaging", are each assessed by a written examination and a coursework essay.

It covers: the critical appreciation of existing research and research methods; the practice of running a neuroimaging study; designing, managing and reporting on an extended research project; and subject-specific IT skills.

Upon completion, you will acquire a systematic understanding of theory, research and practice in neurodevelopmental disorders, develop a critical awareness of contemporary debates and current problems in the field, develop skills of independent learning, critical appraisal and research, apply these systematically in evaluating different forms of evidence and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills gained to current and/or future specialist areas.

- Course purpose -

- Format and assessment -

The programme is delivered via a mix of lectures, tutorials, self-learning, presentations and groups.

Assessment varies from module to module but includes a written dissertation, a poster presentation, essays and a case report.

Career prospects

Graduates are expected to further their academic career (e.g. apply for a PhD) or enter a career in areas such as clinical psychology, social work, occupational therapy or nursing with expertise neurodevelopmental disorders.

This diploma programme provides training in both cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and Counselling for Depression (CfD). Students on this programme will have placements in NHS funded Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) Services.

Degree information

The programme will provide:

-Training in the principles and practice of CfD to meet the competence requirements for practice in CfD as accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy
-Training in the principles and practice of CBT to meet foundation level competence for practice in CBT, which with further supervision could lead to accreditation as a CBT therapist with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP)

Students undertake modules to the value of 120 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules.

-CBT for Depression
-CBT for Anxiety - Advanced
-Clinical Portfolio

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, skills practice, clinical supervision groups, directed reading and e-learning. In addition to time at UCL, students spend at least a further two days a week in an IAPT service seeing people with common mental health problems in CfD and CBT under supervision. Assessment is through coursework, case reports, audio and video recordings of students’ clinical practice and the presentation of a clinical portfolio.

Careers

This programme will broaden the career options of participants by providing accredited training in Counselling for Depression (through BACP), and a thorough grounding in CBT for treatment of anxiety disorders and depression which with additional supervised CBT practice would enable participants to obtain accreditation as a CBT therapist (through BABCP).

Employability
Completing this Postgraduate Diploma equips people to work as counsellors/therapists in NHS funded IAPT services providing both CfD and CBT as well as in other employment contexts.

UCL is among the principal research and training centres in the UK for mental health and psychological therapies. The Counselling for Depression module is taught by staff from the Metanoia Institute, one of the largest dedicated psychotherapy and counselling training centres in the UK, which developed the CfD national curriculum in collaboration with British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). UCL has close links with all IAPT services in London and many IAPT services outside London, with frequent liaison around provision and delivery of clinical placements and supervision, which is so central to training in counselling and psychological therapies.
