This course develops the careers of doctors whose interest is the practice of medicine in tropical and low- and middle-income countries. The course offers a wide choice of modules and provides training in clinical tropical medicine at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

The Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H):

All students going on the MSc will take the Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene. Students with a prior DTM&H, or holding 60 Masters level credits from the East African Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene may apply for exemption from Term 1 via accreditation of prior learning.

Graduates from this course have taken a wide variety of career paths including further research in epidemiology, parasite immunology; field research programmes or international organisations concerned with health care delivery in conflict settings or humanitarian crises; or returned to academic or medical positions in low- and middle-income countries.

Objectives

By the end of this course students should be able to:

- understand and describe the causation, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and control of the major parasitic, bacterial, and viral diseases of developing countries

- demonstrate knowledge and skills in diagnostic parasitology and other simple laboratory methods

- understand and apply basic epidemiological principles, including selecting appropriate study designs

- apply and interpret basic statistical tests for the analysis of quantitative data

- critically evaluate published literature in order to make appropriate clinical decisions

- communicate relevant medical knowledge to patients, health care professionals, colleagues and other groups

- understand the basic sciences underlying clinical and public health practice

Structure

Term 1:

All students follow the course for the DTM&H. Term 1 consists entirely of the DTM&H lectures, seminars, laboratory practical and clinical sessions, and is examined through the DTM&H examination and resulting in the award of the Diploma and 60 Master's level credits at the end of Term 1.

Terms 2 and 3:

Students take a total of five study modules, one from each timetable slot (Slot 1, Slot 2 etc.). Recognising that students have diverse backgrounds and experience, the course director considers requests to take any module within the School's portfolio, provided that this is appropriate for the student.

Project Report:

During the summer months (July - August), students complete a research project in a subject of their choice, for submission by early September. Projects may involve writing up and analysing work carried out before coming to the School, a literature review, or a research study proposal. Some students gather data overseas or in the UK for analysis within the project. Such projects require early planning.

Students undertaking projects overseas will require additional funding of up to £1,500 to cover costs involved. The majority of students who undertake projects abroad receive financial support for flights from the School's trust funds set up for this purpose.

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which can take the form of a wet lab/computer modelling based project or a literature project.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, self study, practical sessions and discussion groups. The research project forms one third of the programme. Each of the taught modules is assessed by unseen written examination (50%) and coursework (50%). The research project is assessed by the dissertation and viva.

Description

The Aerospace Medicine course is a unique study pathway that provides physicians with comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction in advanced aviation physiology, psychology, pathology, clinical and operational aviation medicine.

This course includes time based at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine (CAM), as the Centre provides an appropriate location for valuable elements of the teaching and visits to some of the service and civilian establishments used. The Centre also offers unique practical facilities which are available to students on the course.

You will complete the MSc course in one year, studying September to September. If you are following the MSc pathway, you must take modules totalling 180 credits to meet the requirements of the qualification, of which 60 will come from a research project and written dissertation.

The Postgraduate Diploma pathway requires modules with a total of 120 credits to complete the programme and can be conducted in just over six months.

Teaching

If carrying out the MSc you will receive approximately 510 contact hours at King’s and various external study locations, primarily the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine at Henlow – this includes lectures, seminars, practical sessions.

If you are studying for the full MSc qualification, you will be expected to spend approximately 600 hours on the research project module and thesis.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of oral presentations, written assignments and written examinations.

Course accreditation

The course at King’s is delivered at an approved centre of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) to specifically deliver education and training for individuals wishing to take the RCP, Faculty of Occupational Medicine examination leading to the award of the Diploma in Aviation Medicine.

Location

This course is primarily taught at the King’s College London Guy’s campus, with some teaching at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine at Henlow as well as other locations, mainly in the UK but commonly with one overseas visit. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary.

Career prospects

Career opportunities in aerospace medicine are varied. Many undertaking specialist training have already been employed specifically for the role and are sponsored to undertake these courses. However others use such training so as to better equip themselves for potential employment.

Areas of possible careers include with airlines, aviation regulators, air traffic services, military aviation and space agencies as well as in academic or commercial research organisations. Some aviation medical examiners (AMEs) undertake the DAvMed. Appointment as an AME in the UK is now restricted to doctors on the GMC specialist register. 

Previous graduates of the M.Sc programme and DAvMed courses have been employed in all these areas and enjoyed a varied and challenging career.

Clinical Pharmacology is the study of how drugs influence human physiology and the way the body responds. This study forms a vital part of the clinical development of new medicines and requires an advanced understanding of pre-clinical science, as well as the ethical and legal requirements for specialist research programmes. A well-designed clinical pharmacology programme informs the final regulatory of a new medicine. Therefore, generating skilled clinical pharmacologists is critical for the efficiency of future drug development.

This course will provide you with a broad knowledge and understanding of the drug development process and the medical aspects of the marketing of pharmaceutical products. You will also have opportunities to undertake advanced research projects and the possibility of one or more thesis publications.

The study programme is made up of optional and required modules. The Postgraduate Diploma pathway will require modules totalling 120 credits, while the Postgraduate Certificate will require you to study modules totalling of 60 credits to complete the course.

If you are studying for the MSc qualification part-time, your programme will take up to four years to complete. Dissertation/report

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, clinical teaching (including outpatients, inpatients, workshops, training for history taking and clinical examination and case demonstrations). Assessment is through written examination, MCQ, short case clinical examination, viva voce, continuous assessment and the research dissertation.

Placement

Students are offered the opportunity to undertake a clinical attachment with one or two consultants at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from April to September each year.

It is anticipated that the majority of students will seek employment as audiologists within the UK, in both the NHS and private sector. The main area of activity is adult hearing assessment and rehabilitation. As experience is acquired, audiologists might develop an interest and expertise in balance assessment and rehabilitation, paediatric audiology, tinnitus, cochlear implants, middle ear implants, and bone-anchored hearing aids.

With further experience it is anticipated that graduates might also move towards management, research or teaching.

Employability

Although the programme is vocational and career-specific (audiology) some of our graduates have pursued academic careers, completing PhDs and taught doctorates. International students have used the knowledge and skills gained to promote and develop audiological services in their home countries. The world's first distance learning MSc in Clinical Neurology, is led by experts based at Queen Square in London, a world-renowned centre for clinical neurology and neuroscience, and delivered fully online. This programme will enrich and enhance the knowledge and portfolio of doctors with an interest in neurology.

About this degree

All students will learn the fundamentals of neurological diseases, including stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, headaches, dementia demyelinating, inflammatory and infectious disorders, and neoplasms of CNS.

As well as acquiring skills for neurological examinations and diagnostics that are applicable in day-to-day clinical practice, MSc students also learn about the principles of clinical research.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The MSc consists of eight core modules (120 credits), and a research project (60 credits) and starts in September.

The Postgraduate Diploma consists of eight core modules (120 credits).

The Postgraduate Certificate consists of four core basic modules (60 credits).

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project that involves a literature search, writing a systematic review or meta-analysis, based on the principles of critical reading and analysis which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning is delivered through online sessions with a multimedia approach and interactive features such as videos, interactive graphs and tables, as well as illustrations and text. Learning through real-world case examples is encouraged. Assessment is through multiple choice questions, structured case reviews, tutor assessments and 10,000-word dissertation.

This programme provides an excellent basis for a clinical or research career in clinical neurology and related disciplines.

Employability

Doctors can increase their chances of getting into formal training or research. Qualified neurologists can enhance their international exposure. GPs or physicians and specialists in stroke, geriatrics, psychiatry, and paediatrics can develop their sub-specialist interest in neurology. The Postgraduate Diploma is one of the neurology specialist skills courses for Acute Internal Medicine trainees in the UK.

A Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Neurology (by Distance Learning) has been running very successfully since 2012 and has over 80 students enrolled from all over the world. This flexible learning programme enables students to access teaching sessions at any time in any location, through the internet. Flexible timing means that the programme can be completed at a speed suitable for the individual student. The online programme is supplemented by regular contact with a programme tutor and for the MSc, a research project supervisor based at Queen Square.
