The twelve month, full-time programme is structured to allow for 3 hours lectures per week whilst the rest of the time is spent in the lab or carrying out other research project related work.

MRes in Biomedical Sciences & Translational Medicine students undertake 3 research projects that comprise 10 weeks of lab work followed by 2 weeks in which to write a report. Students also present either a poster or talk at the end of every research project. During the project, all students are encouraged to suggest experiments, design experimental protocols, as well as being taught subject specific techniques and advanced knowledge in transferable skills. The research projects will include at least three different research techniques to enhance experimental training skills that need to be clearly stated at the end of each project.

The lectures relate to state-of-the-art research techniques, application of knowledge in scientific and clinical areas, and the development of personal and professional transferable skills. Important and innovative parts of the transferable skills students take part in include the following workshops “IP and Commercialization (our own version of Dragon’s Den)”, Demonstrator Training and “Writing a PhD Studentship”, as well as taking part in debates for public understanding of science.

The Medical School and the Centre for Life Long Learning in Liverpool have teamed up to deliver a programme in professionally focussed education which is informed by experience and the latest research in both education and healthcare education.

Our graduates leave with a clear understanding of theory, but have also developed their skills and experience in applying that theory to real and practical situations. The blended learning approach which we have adopted (even for the full-time programme) means that we draw on current real experiences in shaping the way in which we think about the challenges that are faced by anyone who is involved in health care professions education.

It has been developed to meet the growing need for community and acute care professionals to have a fundamental knowledge of nutrition, as they become increasingly tasked with the responsibility to provide nutritional support and advice.

You will acquire an in-depth knowledge of the relationship between diet and disease, from the molecular to the population level, and discover the nutrients required throughout each stage of the life cycle to maintain optimal health status. You will also develop a clear understanding of the factors that determine behaviour change in relation to nutrition and health.

If you are a health professional that would like to advance your knowledge of the role nutrition plays in managing health to a high level, this course will equip you with the necessary nutritional expertise to work alongside nutrition-based health professionals to make important contributions to the nutritional wellbeing of patients.

What will I study?

You will learn about the metabolism of nutrients with regards to their effect on the causation and prevention of disease and explore the psychological models of behaviour and behaviour change in relation to food choice. The dietary and nutrient requirements needed to maintain optimal health status from pre-conception to old age will also be considered.

A key element of the programme is the development of nutritional assessment competencies including dietary assessment, anthropology and functional tests in order to learn about nutrition support and the role it plays in improving health outcomes. In addition, you will study the concept of nutrition counselling to enable you to approach patients sensitively and confidently when nutritional status is a concern for health outcomes.

Technical Training in Biomechanics: provides technical training in laboratory techniques appropriate to sport and clinical biomechanics. It will enable you to develop laboratory skills including 2D, and 3D motion analysis, force analysis and biomechanical modelling so that you can collect and interpret biomechanical measurement and protocols to benchmark standards. The topic is taught in the laboratories in a hands-on, interactive manner.

Research Methods: provides mastery and expertise in quantitative research strategies, methods and techniques, specifically focussed on quantitative data so that you can undertake postgraduate research. It aims to encourage critical understanding of how quantitative data should be handled and analysed using a variety of approaches. The module enables you to develop critical analysis of statistical concepts and procedures, trains you to use statistical analysis software and extend your knowledge of the experimental and research design process.

Current Issues in Biomechanics: develops and extends your opportunity to investigate issues of current importance in Biomechanics. You will be presented with a variety of cutting-edge research topics in biomechanics applied to sport, exercise and clinical applications. You will need to read up-to-date literature in the appropriate fields and to evaluate past and current directions. Laboratory content will involve using measurement skills developed in the Technical Training module to replicate an experimental study from the literature.

Muscle-tendon mechanics: introduces the main biomechanical characteristics of human muscles and tendons and the implications for human movement, performance and biomechanical testing. The mechanical parameters and behaviour of these tissues of the human body in-vivo will also be examined in response to chronic loading and disuse to understand basic, musculoskeletal mechanisms and adaptations underpinning changes in whole-body function and performance.

Biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends understanding of biomechanical assessment. With continuous developments of equipment, software, and knowledge, there is a growing need for biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise. This has a role both in performance evaluation, in injury prevention, and in injury rehabilitation. You will be exposed to a large variety of tools, each time first gaining a better understanding of the theoretical framework that justifies the use of such tool.

Clinical Movement Analysis: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends your understanding of clinical movement analysis. You will learn how to interpret gait analysis results in a clinical context through exposure to the current literature, specialised methods, and clinical case studies. Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Alongside this you will study emerging topics in the field of nutrition that have an impact on health status. This will include issues such as nutrigenomics and the impact of sugar intake on health.

The knowledge and skills you develop throughout the course will be utilised in a project-based module that will provide you with the opportunity to complete a research project relevant to your own interests or area of employment. This will be underpinned by a dedicated module enhancing your knowledge of research methods and the research process.

How will I study?

The programme incorporates a variety of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, workshops, student-led seminars, practical activities and case studies. This varied approach is designed to meet a range of learning needs, encourage problem-solving skills and foster peer discussion and communication. The MRes in Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) has been established by leading international researchers and clinicians within the Universities of Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle as part of our MRC/Arthritis Research UK funded Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) initiative (http://www.cimauk.org). CIMA researchers investigate why our bones, joints, ligaments and muscles function less well as we age, and how age related decline of the musculoskeletal tissues and age related clinical disorders (such as osteoporosis and arthritis) can be ameliorated or prevented.

Why is the CIMA MRes unique?

The programme provides you with access to state-of-the-art resources and facilities from across the three CIMA partner sites (Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle), with teaching and supervision delivered by leading researchers and clinical practitioners. As a CIMA student, you will be allied with the wider cohort of CIMA researchers, and participate in regular CIMA scientific meetings and events.

The CIMA MRes Programme

The first semester (60 credits) comprises taught modules which will ground you in current approaches and techniques to study the integrated musculoskeletal system as a whole and the effects ageing has on this system. These modules are delivered by e-learning, including live interactions with tutors and peers, online lectures and presentations and discussion forums. You will supplement the online component via self-directed learning. During the second semester, you will undertake a research module which will provide you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge to a project under the expertise of supervisors based across the CIMA consortium. You will receive multidisciplinary skills training specific to your individual training needs, and have the opportunity to undertake an exchange visit at another CIMA site (e.g. to learn a particular research technique in another laboratory).

The aim of this new MSc programme is to meet the needs of relevant graduates wishing to develop a career in the field of public health nutrition. Graduate students will be provided with the knowledge in nutrition and public health, the skills and networks to develop a career in this growing industry.

A public health nutritionist understands how diet influences the health of different groups within the wider population. This requires an understanding of the scientific principles that underpin nutritional requirements, as well as an interdisciplinary understanding of the complex factors that influence food choices and eating behaviours of a population, and how such concepts can be applied to public health. Public health nutritionists are expected to find themselves in health promotion advisory and policy/advocacy roles as well as engaged in research in the UK and internationally.

In essence, the programme will provide the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to perform as an effective employee in the multi-faceted field of human nutrition.

Staff from the teaching team include members of professional bodies such as the Nutrition Society and British Dietic Association (including active involvement in committee work) and have successfully secured internal and external research funding; and regularly present at national and international conferences. Staff are involved in a range of collaborative research activities with universities within the UK and internationally; work with international organisations such as the World Health Organization, and national bodies such as the National Institute of Health Research, Department of Health and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The University of Liverpool, the Health and Care Professions Council and Society and College of Radiographers have recently re-approved this exciting professional programme, intended for graduates from a health, science, biomedical or social science background. Successful completion of the two-year, full-time, NHS funded (Tuition Fees) programme allows you to practice as a Therapeutic Radiographer within the National Health Service or private health sector.

Therapeutic radiographers play a vital role in the treatment of cancer patients, they are the only health professional qualified to plan and deliver radiotherapy. Crucially, they also support and care for patients throughout their treatment. This innovative pre-registration programme is designed to produce practitioners who are competent, discerning and committed to personal and professional development whilst at the same time ensuring that their patients receive the treatment and care appropriate to their needs.

This programme is studied full time over two calendar years, commencing in semester two (January). It is a vocational programme, taught and assessed predominately at level 7 but does not involve a substantial piece of independent work such as a research dissertation. The programme structure follows the University Framework for Modular Postgraduate Programmes, with students expected to take modules worth 60 credits in each year of study. The programme is a mixture of academic and clinical placement blocks, with 50 weeks of the programme delivered at the University integrated with 43 weeks of professional, clinical placement. The blocks of radiotherapy clinical placement will be delivered in the three main Cancer Centres in the North West of England – The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (and its two Satellite centres), the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (and its satellite centre) and Rosemere Cancer Centre.

The programme is delivered over four semesters and two post-semester periods to facilitate the completion of clinical placements. There are two assessment points in each year of study (normally May/June and December/January), at the end of each semester. The structure and pattern of the delivery of the programme ensures that theory and practice are fully integrated.
