The Faculty of Education, Health and Community was formed in 2013 from the merger of LJMU’s Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure and the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences. Operating over two sites – the IM Marsh campus in Aigburth and Tithebarn Street in Liverpool city centre – the Faculty offers a range of professionally-relevant CPD programmes, postgraduate taught degrees and research opportunities. Students in both locations have access to state-of-the-art facilities, onsite Libraries, IT Zones and dedicated postgraduate study areas plus cafes and social spaces.
The Faculty is working at the vanguard of developments in the field of education and health and has forged extensive networks with primary and secondary schools plus other education providers as well NHS Trusts, health organisations and other key bodies across the North West, the UK and internationally. Such links combined with ongoing research and consultancy help ensure that all taught postgraduate degrees and CPD programmes are professionally-relevant and up-to-date.
The Faculty is organised into four key areas: Sport, Dance, Nutrition, Health and Leisure.
The School of Teacher Education and Professional Learning has a well established reputation for delivering innovative approaches to initial teacher education. All members of the academic team have been successful teachers and maintain strong links with schools and professional bodies. Staff have a wide range of expertise in varying subject areas and regularly contribute to development of national education policy. The School has over 100 years’ experience delivering initial teacher education (PGCE/PGDE programmes) in partnership with primary, secondary and other education providers across the North West of England and beyond. This expertise is reflected in the outstanding feedback received from students every year, with 92% rating the School’s teacher training as good or very good. All initial teacher education programmes are accredited by the National College of Teaching and Leadership and students who successfully complete the PGDE programmes graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The School of Nursing and Allied Health works with a wide range of health and social care organisations to design, deliver and evaluate professionally-relevant courses, from CPD courses through to taught masters programmes and research opportunities. Strong links with the NHS, local authorities, voluntary agencies and the private sector plus ongoing research and consultancy ensure that all programmes are designed to meet workforce needs and deliver up-to-date teaching and vital insights into contemporary professional practice.
The School’s new £1.6million clinical practice suites give students access to hospital-standard facilities, including virtual patients and a state-of-the-art birthing simulator, right on campus. The Suites show a patient’s journey from a home environment through to rehabilitation and cover a range of areas with the latest clinical equipment for simulations and clinical skills development in child nursing, adult and mental health nursing, paramedic practice, social work and midwifery. Such facilities help prepare students for the rigours and realism of actual practice, giving them the confidence to deal with real service users in the NHS, private and voluntary settings.
The Public Health Institute has a long-standing reputation for delivering internationally-recognised applied research and professionally-relevant postgraduate programmes. The Institute offers an innovative, evidenced-based portfolio of taught masters programmes as well as exciting research opportunities. The Institute has a multi-disciplinary approach to public health and works with international organisations, such as the World Health Organization and national bodies, for example the National Institute of Health Research, Department of Health, Home Office and National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). Locally, the Institute collaborates closely with health services as well as local authorities, judicial bodies, environmental services and community groups.
The School of Education, Leisure and Sport Studies excels in a wide range of areas including tourism, events management, food, sport, dance, outdoor education and professional development. Research supervision is available in the following areas: Sport, Dance, Nutrition, Health and Leisure.
