In the two-year master’s program in Business Administration - Strategy and Management in International Organizations (SMIO), we aim to educate future leaders with good judgment, who can analyze complex problems and make well-balanced decisions.
The program combines fundamental academic knowledge (thinking and reasoning) and experiential knowledge (skills) to prepare students to go beyond applying known solutions to known problems.
The learning pillars of the program are research-based knowledge grounded in rich empirical examples, a focus on critical and in-depth analysis, and communication of results. The program combines the depth of a research master with the rich practical examples and casework-intensity of a more practical master. The program courses therefore each lay a solid research foundation in the form of articles and books by both classic and contemporary great thinkers. On top of that, each course provides insights into the workings of a number of international organizations (ranging from Starbucks and Apple to The Red Cross) and empirical phenomena (from CSR and outsourcing trends to business development in East Africa). Students then use their research-based foundation to draw connections, define problems and analyze through for example casework and projects. Each course also practices the students’ communication skills in one or more areas, through the writing of argumentative essays, oral presentations, feedback-sessions, debates and café seminars.
The program seeks to simulate the future work environment of the students, and hence learning processes are centered in teamwork, leadership and organization, and set in an environment where the study tempo and expectations are high and the diversity of people great. The cultural mix enables us to use the class itself as a teaching tool, where the development of cross-cultural competences becomes a positive side effect of for example team projects.
From day one, we actively work with team processes where taken-for-granted ideas are challenged and the students’ abilities are stretched, step-by-step. Our SMIO students are typically highly committed and hard-working, used to assuming responsibility, and working under pressure in a multicultural environment where a variety of perspectives have to be turned into workable solutions. Challenging assignments and tight deadlines hone the students’ bonds and SMIO students therefore generally get to know each other well, forming an international network for the future.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will have acquired analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and a solid strategic foundation. They will also be seasoned team workers with an international outlook, who are used to embracing complexity.
Degree: Master of Science (two years) with a major in Transportation Systems Engineering
The Intelligent transport system master's programme focuses on the integration of IT and telecommunications into transport and logistics systems, with the aim of increasing efficiency, safety, mobility and customer satisfaction while reducing environmental impact.
Well-designed transport and logistics systems are fundamental to individual mobility, commerce, welfare and economic growth. With ever-increasing volumes of traffic and goods, future transport systems face a huge challenge: How to balance the need for speedy, efficient and sustainable transport with the negative impacts of congestion, pollution and fatalities? The answer lies in a tighter integration of telecommunications and information technology into vehicles and physical road infrastructure. This programme provides the engineering and managerial skills required to design, plan, analyse and manage transport and logistics systems.
Through a multi-disciplinary approach, you will acquire the skills to adopt changes in the industrial environment in a responsible and efficient manner. The programme provides the tools required to understand, develop and control future transport and logistics systems through the use of optimisation, simulation and geographical information systems. You will study traffic and supply-chain modelling, mobile and wireless telecommunications, road safety and project management.
For the second and third semester you may choose between the Traffic profile and the Logistics profile. The final semester is dedicated to your thesis, which is usually written in close collaboration with a company, city or government body.
You will need strong skills in mathematics and an analytical mind: programming experience is a distinct advantage. You will carry out group-based lab practicals and project work. Many courses are continuously assessed through hand-in assignments and reports. Oral and written communication is an integral part of the programme, to prepare students for international management positions.
You will be at the frontline of Swedish transportation research. Linköping University is the coordinating university of the Swedish National Postgraduate School of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems). The Master’s programme Industrial engineering and management provides knowledge in industrial management through a multi-disciplinary approach, giving you the skills to adopt changes in the industrial environment in a responsible and efficient manner.
Core courses in project management and organisation, management systems and sustainability, production planning and control, and quality management will help put your engineering skills in an industrial management context. After the first term, you will follow one of two profiles: Operations Management or Environmental Innovation Management.
The Operations Management profile deals with operations management issues in the manufacturing and service industries, providing approaches for creating and sustaining effective organisations. A central idea is how to improve processes to provide maximum consumer benefits through the best use of available resources. You will gain insight into technological trends and explore financial and engineering consequences of operational decisions. Quality is another important module, which introduces the concepts of lean production and the Six Sigma methodology. For the closing project course (12 ECTS), you will apply your knowledge by solving real-life production management problems.
The Environmental Innovation Management profile focuses on the development and commercialisation of resource-efficient products and sustainable solutions, looking at innovation in major corporations as well as entrepreneurial start-ups. In the final Innovation and Entrepreneurship project course (12 ECTS), you will learn how to tackle challenges associated with innovative activities.
In addition to profile-specific courses, the programme contains mandatory courses in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and science and research methodology, to prepare you for the work in preparing a master’s thesis. The thesis is usually written with another student and in close collaboration with a company. This may be a small local company or a global industrial corporation such as Ericsson or Scania.
Taught courses are characterised by a close relationship between teachers and students, with smaller classes and lively group discussions. Courses are assessed through written exams and hand-in assignments, and through group-based project work.
