Limerick is a historic city in Ireland, at the head of the Shannon Estuary, opening onto the country’s western coast. It is home to several universities and other higher education institutions, with around 20,000 resident students.
Having played an important role in various periods of Irish history, Limerick retains many attractive historical features and heritage sites. Its pleasant city centre is located on King’s Island, which sits between the River Shannon and its smaller distributary, the Abbey River. Here are located some of the city’s oldest buildings and architectural remains dating back to ancient Viking and Norman settlements.
Today, Limerick is an important Irish economic hub, with a number of international companies and corporations based in the city.
Postgraduate students in Limerick benefit from living and studying in Ireland’s first national City of Culture, with a bustling music, theatre and comedy circuit, as well as a busy nightlife. More sedate recreations can be had visiting the city’s many historical features and districts, or taking advantage of its rail links and close proximity to Shannon Airport to visit other parts of Ireland.
Limerick’s universities are of relatively recent date, but are already well established as centres of high quality education and training in Ireland, with large numbers of international students.
The largest university in the city is the University of Limerick, established in 1972. The city is also home to the Limerick Institute of Technology, one of Ireland’s high-quality professional education and technical training institutions.
The local economy in Limerick offers a range of employment opportunities in sectors as diverse as life sciences, information technology and engineering. Companies with a presence in Limerick include Johnson & Johnson, Uber, Viagogo, Dell and Intel.
