The World Health Organisation Global Burden of Disease Study has shown that non-communicable chronic disease accounts for ~ 60% of deaths globally. Major contributors include cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic kidney disease. Inflammation is the central driving force in much of this burden of chronic degenerative disease. This MSc course is therefore designed to integrate current cutting-edge research in the fields of molecular and cellular biology and immunology and use this to demonstrate:

- The fundamental processes of inflammation
- The molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease progression that are driven by inflammation

The course is carefully integrated and combines up-to-date practical and theoretical teaching methods to prepare students for careers in postgraduate biomedical research, medicine, and the bio-pharmaceutical industry.

This exciting new course is designed to equip future scientists with the knowledge to make a difference in the understanding and treatment of cancer. The course will take the mechanistic understanding of cancer biology and apply it to the analysis of risk, prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. Building on a foundation of the understanding of basic cancer cell biology, translational coverage will consider design of treatment modalities, mechanisms of action of anti-cancer drugs, therapy resistance and biomarker discovery. The course will allow the students to gain expertise and knowledge in therapy, cancer chemoprevention, anti-cancer target discovery, clinical trials, imaging, cancer risk and epidemiology and biostatistics. A key component of the course is a five/six-month research project, which will give students an opportunity to study one of these areas in depth.

The course provides detailed insight into the technologies that allow development and production of biopharmaceuticals from start to finish (from pre-clinical studies, to clinic, through to marketing) that could lead to cures to most major diseases. A high practical content prepares graduates to quickly enter an industrial setting.

The course is inter-disciplinary and is based on the teaching/research expertise of staff in the disciplines of pharmacy, biotechnology, pharmacology, toxicology, bioinformatics and business. In the global sphere, pharmaceutical biotechnology courses are rare and no other course offers such a broad scope.

•This course provides a response to the rapidly expanding field of biopharmaceuticals (DNA and protein-based medicines) by running an intensive taught programme covering the first two semesters with the opportunity of conducting independent research in this area in the third semester

The learning environment for the first two semesters will be varied with lectures, tutorials, laboratories and computer laboratories. You can expect to spend about half of your directed study time working at the bench in our research laboratories. In the third semester the learning venue will depend on your dissertation topic and will be aimed at guided self-study.

•This is the first MSc dedicated to the new QbD approach to pharmaceutical process and product development

The course offers a sound grounding in research methods, practice and theory in the field of healthcare quality and patient safety as well as developing key transferable skills in critical appraisal, academic writing, project management and communication.

Teaching and Assessment Methods

Taught modules will use a variety of assessment methods, usually including oral presentations, assignments and written tests. Students will also be required to produce a dissertation relating to a healthcare quality and safety theme.

Modules will usually be taught in blocks of two/three days. Each student will be allocated a personal tutor as well as a supervisor for their dissertation.
