The Medicine MRes is a strongly research-based programme, which gives you the training and opportunity to develop as a scientist or scientifically-literate clinician.

It can help you to gain:

  • a comprehensive understanding of the concepts and techniques relevant to medical research
  • the ability to critically and creatively evaluate current issues in medicine and health.

You’ll get experience in formulating new hypotheses and exploring the causes and consequences of diseases by conducting rigorous scientific research in a laboratory or with patients.

A nine-month research project helps you to develop specialised knowledge, as well as design and undertake a substantial piece of publishable research. You’ll be based in one of our internationally-renowned institutes and be supervised by leading experts in their field. You can choose from a range of research opportunities in applied health, cancer and pathology, cardiovascular, genes and development, medical education and musculoskeletal topics.

The School of Medicine is a major international centre for research and education. Our ambition is to improve health and reduce health inequalities, locally and globally, through excellent research and its translation into healthcare practice, and the education of future scientific and clinical leaders who will advocate and practise an evidence-based approach.

Course content

The taught modules are designed to stimulate a deep and critical knowledge of research. The optional modules allow you to develop a comprehensive knowledge of different approaches to medical research.

The Paper Criticism module enables you to develop subject-specific skills, such as an understanding of the ethical issues of medicine and knowledge of the current requirements for the governance of medical research and its publication. You apply your knowledge of research methods to published papers and enhance your critical skills.

The Analytic Research module provides a critical awareness of research planning and methods and develops your research skills. It includes topics on the structure of analytic research investigations; the analysis of the data obtained in analytic studies, especially the metrics used; the problems resulting from bias and confounding and how they are dealt with; basic statistics of precision and comparison;dealing with unequal duration of follow-up in cohort studies; and critical appraisal of published research.

The Capturing and Handling Data in Research module is an introduction to the collection and handling of health research data. It will include topics on: social inclusion in research; sampling from populations; types of data; collecting data through questionnaires; how scales and tests are used to collect data; and how data are collected and described using various fractions such as rates, ratios, risks and odds; recording quantitative and qualitative data in suitable formats; using computers in the analysis of data; the importance of the statistics that summarise quantitative data; and an introduction to the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Critical appraisal of published research will underpin theory.

Learning and teaching

There are few formal lectures in the MRes programme. Most of your time is devoted to planning and conducting the research project, usually working with a small team of researchers or healthcare professionals.

Interactive tutorial sessions are shared with students on other Masters programmes in the School of Medicine, intercalating medical students and health professionals.

Assessment

There is one examination in May for the Paper Criticism module. Other modules are assessed by the submission of coursework, workbooks, reports and reviews.

Exit awards of Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Research (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Research (60 credits) are available for this programme.

Curating Science will enable you to develop an independent academic and curatorial practice at the intersection of histories, philosophies and social studies of science, science communication and museum studies.

You will engage with current debates in science communication and interpretive practice in museums, including cutting-edge art-science practices that are reimagining ways of knowing and being in the 21st Century. Alongside this, you will be encouraged to develop innovative practices of dialogic and participative engagement, developing their own ways of convening public spaces for debate.

You will undertake a range of active learning activities from developing displays, programmes and events to developing digital content and designing their own research projects. You will be supported throughout by an interdisciplinary academic staff team drawn from museum and curatorial studies and the histories and philosophies of science, as well as professionals from our partner institutions.

Students can specialise in their own areas of interest, through choosing from an array of optional modules that explore contemporary curatorial strategies, technologies and media, cultural memory, histories of medicine, audiences, participation and engagement. You will have the option of undertaking a negotiated placement with a museum or heritage organisation.

Course content

All students on the MA in Curating Science will take three core modules.

The History and Theory of Modern Science Communication allows students to explore how science, technology and medicine have been communicated to a wider public in the past. Students will identify how the processes and purposes of science communication has changed over the last two centuries and debate the consequences for science communication of the introduction of new media, ranging from the radio to the internet. The module addresses these questions by surveying the development of science communication since 1750, and by examining the changing theoretical perspectives that have underpinned these developments. Students will learn to re-examine the processes of contemporary science communication in the light of a deeper understanding of this history.

Interpreting Cultures is underpinned by action learning and puts contemporary curation in an international context. From the outset, students work on an interpretation intervention with one of the archives and collections on campus (such as The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery; Special Collections; Treasures of the Brotherton; Marks and Spencer Company Archive; ULITA ― an Archive of International Textiles; Museum of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine). This intensive experience of project planning, management, collaboration and team working prepares students for the option of undertaking a negotiated work placement in the second semester or optional modules exploring audiences, participation or engagement.

Through our Advanced Research Skills modules, students are equipped to undertake assessments and ultimately develop their own research project. The modules build to a symposium in Semester 2 where students present initial research findings towards a dissertation on a research topic of interest.

In addition, students choose from a range of optional modules offered by the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies and the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science. These include the opportunity to complete a placement or consultancy project role in either curational approaches or engagement.

Placement opportunities

In Semester 2 you will have the option to undertake a negotiated work placement to gain first-hand experience of curating science.

Medical Imaging is an essential component of modern medicine, playing a key role in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease. The Medical Imaging MSc covers:

  • the basic physics involved in the different imaging techniques
  • image formation, pattern recognition and applications in the field of radiology
  • current issues in a modern UK NHS radiology department.

Whilst not a clinical skills course, the teaching of the technical aspects of imaging techniques is firmly grounded and in their clinical usage. Many of our lecturers are at the forefront of research in their field and bring insights from emerging imaging techniques.

This programme is designed for recent graduates preparing for a career in medical imaging, professionals already working in the field, and medical students wishing to intercalate.

You can study this subject at a MSc, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate level.

You may transfer from your original programme to another one, provided that you do this before you have completed the programme and before an award has been made. Part-time study is also an option.

As an MSc student, you undertake a research project in the field of Medical Imaging. New research topics are available each year and include projects in MRI, Ultrasound, X-ray and their clinical application. You'll be asked to state your preferred research project. Learning and teaching

All modules (except for your research project) are taught through traditional lectures, tutorials, practicals and computer based sessions. We also employ blended learning, combining online learning with other teaching methods.

You’ll be taught about the underpinning science of the various imaging modalities, and we cover a range of clinical applications demonstrating the use of medical imaging in modern medicine. Many of the lecturers are at the forefront of research in their particular field and will bring insights from current clinical imaging practice and developments of new and emerging imaging techniques.

Assessment

The taught modules are assessed by coursework and unseen written examinations. Exams are held during the University exam periods in January and May.

The research project is assessed in separate stages, where you submit a 1,000-word essay (20%), a 5,000-word journal-style research article (70%) and make an oral presentation (10%).

Past graduates have gone on to enter careers in medical imaging or related disciplines, such as radiology and radiography. Often students are already working in the area, and use the skills and knowledge gained in the programme to enhance their careers. The Diagnostic Imaging MSc is designed to match the professional development needs of the diagnostic imaging practitioner and the changing needs of patients in the modern healthcare system. It aims to develop highly competent practitioners who can make a real contribution to healthcare services.

This multi-disciplinary programme will appeal to a range of healthcare professionals including radiographers, clinical physiologists, mammographers, sonographers, medical doctors, nurses, clinical scientists. It offers:

  • specialist clinical expertise underpinned by in-depth theoretical knowledge, including of specialist areas of diagnostic imaging, such as medical ultrasound and breast imaging.
  • an understanding of the evidence and research base of the discipline.

We have a highly successful record of teaching breast imaging and medical ultrasound at postgraduate level. You’ll benefit from being part of the School of Medicine, with its world-leading research and expertise.

More information

You can also study this subject at Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) and Certificate (60 or 75 credits) levels. Study for the Postgraduate Diploma normally takes one year full time (specific module combinations only) or two years part time. Study for the Postgraduate Certificate normally takes one year part time.

Accreditation

The MSc Diagnostic Imaging offered by the University of Leeds was approved by the College of Radiographers for a period of five years, from June 2016 to June 2021 inclusive. The programme is also accredited by the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE).

Exemptions

Students obtaining an MSc which includes the Mammography Technique module will be eligible to apply for the College of Radiographers’ Postgraduate Award in Mammography.

Course content

The programme content reflects the increasing demand for focused and in-depth training in specialist areas of diagnostic imaging. It is both research-led and evidence based.

On the PGCert programme you study modules worth 60 or 75 credits.  On the PGDip programme you study modules worth 120 credits. If you study part time you will study fewer modules in each year. On the MSc programme you study modules worth 180 credits. All students study a combination of Science and Technology, Professional Issues and Imaging Practice modules. A wide range of optional modules allow you to tailor your studies to your professional interests.

Some modules listed below contain a number of options. The Professional Work Based Learning module enables you to undertake a work-based project. The Negotiated Imaging Practice module offers a range of options, including: Breast Ultrasound, Cardiac Ultrasound, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound or Vascular Ultrasound.

In addition, we may support alternative areas of clinical practice by negotiation. Each module (15 credit equivalent) requires 3 to 5 days attendance at the University (for 30 credits this is 6-10 days), in addition to independent learning and practical skill development in order to achieve success in assessment and be of value to the student and their workplace. Students who already have a Postgraduate Diagnostic Imaging qualification may access certain 30-credit modules on a free-standing basis.

On the MSc programme you study a Research Methods module and submit a dissertation.

Learning and teaching

The programme is designed to allow you as much choice as possible in the way that you study. Methods of training are highly participative with a combination of tutor-led input and support, learning through group work and discussion, and individual exercises and practice.

Our assessment methods have been carefully chosen to develop the skills that imaging students will use in specialist and advanced clinical practice. The assessment of your competence to practice takes place via an observed clinical session or by portfolio, depending on the module. As a physiotherapist you will help people of all ages to manage pain and dysfunction. Our course will prepare you for work as a physiotherpaist through a combination of University based modules and clinical practice placements. You'll study the core areas of physiotherapy practice - neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy, cardiorespiratory physiotherapy and neurological physiotherapy.

Practice placements will take place in a variety of environments, including primary and community care and hospital based settings. This new MRes has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to develop your research skills in applied medical ethics. It provides an excellent stepping stone to PhD research.

You will begin with intensive research methods training which will allow you to develop your skills under the supervision of expert tutors. You’ll gain a range of skills and valuable experience for a career in academic or professional research.

You will then spend the remainder of the year writing an extended dissertation in which you can examine in depth an area of particular interest to you within the rich field of medical ethics, with the support of a research supervisor.

You will meet with your research supervisor virtually through our interactive classroom, Blackboard Collaborate. For students local to Leeds it is also possible to study the MRes as a campus-based programme.

As an MRes student you will have the opportunity to audit any relevant modules from our taught MA Biomedical & Health Care Ethics.

The Masters by research is made up of a 30-credit taught Research Methods module and a 150-credit dissertation.

IDEA5401M Research Methods

Delivered online, this module will provide you with training in core skills and a variety of key research methodologies for undertaking high quality research in medical ethics. It also addresses methodological issues raised in the conduct of inter-disciplinary research. It will equip you to undertake a longer independent supervised dissertation on an aspect of ethics of your choice.

During the module we will cover research skills, including identifying a suitable topic for research, bibliography and referencing. We will also explore a range of methodological approaches to the discipline of ethics.

IDEA5402M Dissertation (MRes)

You will produce an independent piece of work analysing in detail an aspect of medical ethics. The work will enable you to exhibit both some awareness of detail of theoretical ethical considerations and to indicate their application to issues in medical ethics, where relevant making use of your experience in the context of professional life in medicine and healthcare. You will be supported through the process by a research supervisor.

Course content

Using specially designed Case-Based Learning, you'll be able to relate your learning to a simulated clinical case, thereby embedding your newfound knowledge in a meaningful and useful way.

Our MSc Bioscience course gives you the opportunity to develop a broad scientific base on which to build your future career.

On this course you’ll study core research training modules designed to equip you with the expertise needed to work at the forefront of the modern bioscience sector. You can specialise in exciting contemporary topics in the areas of human disease, bioinformatics, biotechnology and plant science, and choose from a range of optional modules, including those associated with the specialisms we offer. This means you can study the topics that interest you and match your career aspirations.

You’ll also carry out an independent research project in an area related to your course options.

The course is 100% coursework assessed (although some modules have small in-course tests). Our teaching and assessment methods are designed to develop your independent thinking, problem solving, communication skills and practical ability, making you attractive to employers or providing an excellent foundation for further study (eg PhD).

You’ll study in a faculty ranked 6th in the UK for its research impact in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014).

Course content

This course is designed to equip you with the expertise necessary to work at the forefront of the modern bioscience sector. We’ll offer you a combination of practical training and theoretical modules to help you build your knowledge and skills.

The practical experience you gain during this degree is a vital part of your career preparation. You’ll receive substantial training in practical methods and technologies currently being used to advance the biological sciences.

During the course you’ll apply yourself through core research training modules. You’ll undertake a laboratory-based mini-project providing a hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques. You’ll also carry out a laboratory-based independent research project on an innovative topic related to your course options.

Importantly, we’ll also give you a strong foundation of theoretical teaching to enhance your practical training. You’ll develop your knowledge through research planning exercises and by studying methodologies underpinning contemporary bioscience, with many optional modules available to choose from, including Advanced Immunology, Plant Biotechnology, and Medical Diagnostics.

Providing nutritious food is a key target for the government, which is keen to encourage industry and academic experts to work together to improve food standards. The politics of food in society, involving manufacturers, retailers, consumers and health professionals, are complex and continually evolving.

Throughout the programme you’ll investigate the scientific aspects of food, nutrition and the wider implications of diet on our health and wellbeing. You’ll balance your studies between the scientific studies on food, nutrition and related health aspects.

The breadth of the programme gives an appreciation of key positions of food and health, as well as in food composition, and the manufacture of foods. At the interface between food and nutrition, graduates will be key in the development of new healthy eating trends.
