Acquire the knowledge and skills to prepare you for a career as an environmental health practitioner by fully analysing the five main intervention areas: housing; food safety; occupational health and safety; environmental protection and public health. This involves understanding the environmental stress factors and their effect on human health and safety, together with the legal and technical frameworks for controlling these risks.

Course Benefits

Successful completion of a CIEH accredited course is the first stage of becoming a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner. You will also need to produce a Portfolio of Professional Practice (PPP) covering all five intervention areas and complete the professional interview. For the PPP you will be required to engage in work-related learning activities. These elements of the course are managed by the CIEH and further information can be obtained from their website (http://www.cieh.org/).

Our course is designed to prepare you for the next steps of your professional training and includes work-related activities that may help you complete some elements of the your PPP. You will also be actively encouraged to seek relevant experience as this may shorten the time required post-graduation to complete the CIEH requirements.

This course provides you with a unique combination of training on the physical, social and policy aspects of climate change and on broader environmental policy and governance.

Course content

When completed on a full-time basis, this 12 month Masters is split into 3 semesters.

In your semester 1, you’ll develop a grounding in the physical and social sciences – important for understanding climate mitigation and adaptation.

You’ll also examine the multiple pathways through which human-environment interaction is governed.

You’ll become familiar with appropriate research methods and gain the research skills relevant to your dissertation project.

In semester 2, your studies will give you an overview of climate change impact assessment and predictions, along with key concerns and strategies of adaptation to climate change.

You’ll explore the relative significance of main sources of greenhouse gases and the potential, technologies and strategies for reducing them.

You’ll develop an understanding of the key challenges for controlling greenhouse gas emissions, alongside the critical political issues related to mitigation.

During semester 3, you’ll propose and undertake an extended research project leading to the submission of a 12,000-word dissertation in August.

This dissertation gives you the opportunity to examine the detail of an issue of your choice.

The Hydrological Processes module gives you the essential understanding of hydrology needed by any water manager, whilst Systems Thinking will provide you with the skills to approach and solve business problems in a practical way.

In semester 2, you will take complementary modules on client management and project management, delivered by practising water management consultants. You’ll also choose optional modules on water quality or a range of consultancy-focused topics. Throughout the course you will take a specific professional development module. This all leads up to your dissertation, where you get the chance to use the skills you have learned to undertake a cutting edge research project.

You’ll be taught through classwork, research seminars, lectures, tutorials, poster presentation, fieldwork and tutorials, group work and/or individual.

For your dissertation project, instead of the traditional thesis, you’ll submit a manuscript suitable for submission to an academic journal. This aims to teach the key transferable skill of communicating results professionally and efficiently, and increase the frequency of publication of students’ research.

You will be prepared for a research career, usually onwards to a PhD but this could also lead to a research role in government or industry.

Traditionally a very high proportion of our students go on to further PhD study in climate or atmospheric science. The MSc Sustainable Cities tackles this skills shortage by equipping you with the knowledge and tools necessary to become an urban sustainability leader. On this programme you will experience urban sustainability first hand, blending concepts and theories with real world problems and solutions.

We take a ‘systems’ approach to teaching sustainable cities, you will learn about energy systems, transport networks, housing provision, and urban ecosystems. Learning and teaching

Postgraduate study involves a range of teaching methods, supported by independent learning. In addition to the traditional lecture and seminar formats, you’ll experience a blend of workshops, computer exercises, practical sessions, directed reading, reflective journal, student-led discussions, fieldwork and tutorials.

Field Trips

Core components are river basin hydrology and basic environmental GIS. Distinct from similar courses offered in the UK, the course concentrates on the biological principles underlying biodiversity, its assessment and management. You’ll learn to identify plants and animals, explore the institutional framework underlying biodiversity and conservation and gain key analytical and practical skills for a range of academic and professional careers. You’ll also gain valuable experience in biodiversity and conservation-related research.

The University of Leeds has twice been recognised by the European Union as a "centre of excellence" for biodiversity and conservation training. We believe biodiversity can only be managed and conserved when it can be measured and interpreted properly.

Course content

This degree offers you a wide range of options, allowing you to personalise your study in preparation for further academic research or professional development in the field.

We’ll equip you with a diverse set of skills needed for ecological careers and further research. The course combines theory-based modules on the principles of ecology and conservation with a wide range of practical skills-based modules. These include survey, management and identification skills, where the emphasis is on spending time in the field, and analytical skills such as statistics and GIS.

The independent research project is one of the most important and potentially fulfilling parts of the degree. Projects cover a wide range of topics and usually include around six to eight weeks of practical work. A number of our students have been based overseas for their project.

If you study part time, the course will last for two years and you’ll study around half of the total number of modules each year.

MSc or MRes – what’s the difference?

MRes students have fewer taught modules, and carry out two major research projects rather than one. The MSc is the broader course, suitable for both conservation careers and PhD study, while most students taking the MRes are planning to go on to do a PhD. The MSc allows students to widen their skills base through the additional taught elements that are available. Research projects

As an MSc student, you’ll carry out one research project. The range of project topics is large and diverse, covering applied, empirical and theoretical subjects. Projects can be carried out in the UK or overseas: projects have been carried out in over twenty countries so far, and this year alone we have projects in Belize, Thailand, Greece, Bermuda and Morocco.

Practical skills

There are many opportunities to develop valuable practical skills through modules such as Practical Conservation with the National Trust, Insect Identification, Plant Identification, and by overseas field courses within Europe and Africa (see field courses) and research project work. You can also build your analytical skills, with modules in GIS and statistics.

Leeds is one of the best locations geographically to study Biodiversity and Conservation. You’ll be within easy reach of three areas of great natural beauty and dramatic scenery; Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and the Peak District – providing you with a wide range of project and fieldwork opportunities.

Assessment

We use a variety of assessment methods: practical work, data handling and problem solving exercises, group work, computer-based simulation, essays, posters and oral presentations.

Course content

The course is split in to 3 semesters if you study on a 12 month full-time basis. In the semester 1, you will take lectures and seminars which lay the theoretical foundation needed for you to gain an in-depth understanding of sustainability topics.

In semester 2, you will focus on you applying this knowledge through case studies and on practical professional skills development.

Throughout the year, you can also take part in personal development workshops and activities including networking with project hosts, helping you secure a successful research project for semester three.

In semester 3, the focus switches to individual work, where you will deliver a project usually carried out on a placement of around 10 weeks.

You will then present the progression you have made in your project around the end of June, and submit your final dissertation in late August.

The course runs for 24 months on a part-time basis, with each year split into 3 semesters. You will take 2 taught modules in semesters 1 and 2 each year, followed by a full-time project placement in semester 3 of your final year.

Course content

Core modules will develop your understanding of key topics such as how air pollution and carbon emissions can be measured and controlled, as well as their impact on the surrounding environment. You’ll also focus on renewable technologies such as wind, solar and geothermal energy and hydroelectricity.

In addition, you’ll consider waste and biomass as renewable technologies and how energy can be recovered from landfill and waste incineration. You’ll also gain a broader understanding of the contexts in which these technologies are emerging, including related legal, environmental and financial issues.

With this foundation, you’ll specialise in areas that suit your interests and career ambitions when you choose from optional modules. You could focus on energy management and conservation, or how developments in engine technology are making transportation more fuel efficient, among other topics.

In the latter part of the year, you’ll focus on your research project. You’ll choose your topic – normally related to one of our world-class research institutes – and work closely with your supervisor to apply what you’ve learned to a real-life problem.

If you have a mathematical background and want to apply your mathematical skills to understanding the complex behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans then this could be the programme for you. This is an exciting interdisciplinary subject, of increasing importance to a society facing climate change.

You’ll be trained in both modern applied mathematics and atmosphere-ocean science, combining teaching resources from the School of Mathematics and the School of Earth and Environment. The latter are provided by members of the School’s Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science, part of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science.

Only a handful of UK universities are positioned to offer similar interdisciplinary training in modern applied mathematics and atmosphere-ocean-climate science.

If you do not meet the full academic entry requirements then you may wish to consider the Graduate Diploma in Mathematics. This course is aimed at students who would like to study for a mathematics related MSc course but do not currently meet the entry requirements. Upon completion of the Graduate Diploma, students who meet the required performance level will be eligible for entry onto a number of related MSc courses, in the following academic year.

Course content

The focus of the course is on analysing the equations of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, via mathematical and numerical modelling. The programme is highly flexible, meaning you are free to choose options from applied maths, atmosphere-ocean science, numerical methods and scientific computation alongside the compulsory core applied maths and fluid dynamics modules.

Topics are drawn from four broad areas:

  1. Applied mathematics: asymptotic methods, fluid dynamics, mathematical theory of waves and stability of flow
  2. Numerical methods and computing: discretization of ordinary and partial differential equations, algorithms for linear algebra, direct use of numerical weather and climate models
  3. Atmospheric dynamics: structure of the atmosphere, dynamics of weather systems and atmospheric waves
  4. Ocean dynamics: the large-scale ocean circulation, surface waves and tides

Modules are taught either by the School of Mathematics or the School of Earth and Environment.

The course is made up of two parts: a set of taught modules, and a research project. Two-thirds of the course consists of taught modules involving lectures and some computer workshops. Beyond a compulsory core of atmosphere-ocean fluid dynamics, students may choose options to suit their interests from applied maths (e.g. nonlinear dynamics), atmosphere-ocean science (e.g. climate change processes, weather forecasting), numerical methods and scientific computation. Curating Science will enable you to develop an independent academic and curatorial practice at the intersection of histories, philosophies and social studies of science, science communication and museum studies.

You will engage with current debates in science communication and interpretive practice in museums, including cutting-edge art-science practices that are reimagining ways of knowing and being in the 21st Century. Alongside this, you will be encouraged to develop innovative practices of dialogic and participative engagement, developing their own ways of convening public spaces for debate.

You will undertake a range of active learning activities from developing displays, programmes and events to developing digital content and designing their own research projects. You will be supported throughout by an interdisciplinary academic staff team drawn from museum and curatorial studies and the histories and philosophies of science, as well as professionals from our partner institutions.

Students can specialise in their own areas of interest, through choosing from an array of optional modules that explore contemporary curatorial strategies, technologies and media, cultural memory, histories of medicine, audiences, participation and engagement. You will have the option of undertaking a negotiated placement with a museum or heritage organisation.

Course content

All students on the MA in Curating Science will take three core modules.

The History and Theory of Modern Science Communication allows students to explore how science, technology and medicine have been communicated to a wider public in the past. Students will identify how the processes and purposes of science communication has changed over the last two centuries and debate the consequences for science communication of the introduction of new media, ranging from the radio to the internet. The module addresses these questions by surveying the development of science communication since 1750, and by examining the changing theoretical perspectives that have underpinned these developments. Students will learn to re-examine the processes of contemporary science communication in the light of a deeper understanding of this history.

Interpreting Cultures is underpinned by action learning and puts contemporary curation in an international context. From the outset, students work on an interpretation intervention with one of the archives and collections on campus (such as The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery; Special Collections; Treasures of the Brotherton; Marks and Spencer Company Archive; ULITA ― an Archive of International Textiles; Museum of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine). This intensive experience of project planning, management, collaboration and team working prepares students for the option of undertaking a negotiated work placement in the second semester or optional modules exploring audiences, participation or engagement.

Through our Advanced Research Skills modules, students are equipped to undertake assessments and ultimately develop their own research project. The modules build to a symposium in Semester 2 where students present initial research findings towards a dissertation on a research topic of interest.

In addition, students choose from a range of optional modules offered by the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies and the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science. These include the opportunity to complete a placement or consultancy project role in either curational approaches or engagement.

In Semester 2 you will have the option to undertake a negotiated work placement to gain first-hand experience of curating science.

We have close links with many of the major cultural institutions and organisations in the region, meaning there are plenty of opportunities for you to explore. If you have a particular ambition in mind for your placement, we usually try to find a role that suits you.
