As part of your training, you will be placed in primary schools that have a particularly strong focus on physical education, providing the perfect setting for you to apply your theoretical knowledge and hone your practical skills while learning from experienced teachers with a specialism in PE.

We will develop your understanding of core and foundation subjects such as maths, English and history so that you can also confidently teach these subjects at primary level. At the same time, we will build your knowledge of how children learn so that you can create tailored and effective lessons.

We will organise your extensive school placements so you can apply your knowledge in a classroom setting and your placements will be timetabled to fit with your taught seminars on campus.

We have more than 100 years' experience of teacher training and you'll be supported by an experienced course team determined to see you flourish as an innovative primary school teacher who specialises in physical education. You will become part of a supportive teaching and learning community, where you will be able to pick up advice and tips from your course tutors and share ideas on lesson plans and classroom experiences with your fellow students.

Helping you to develop your confidence, identity and style through a critically reflective approach to your practice will form a fundamental element of your training.

To help with your preparations for your course, you will have the opportunity to attend an outdoor experience during induction, where you will meet your tutors and fellow trainees, start to develop your support networks and discover how the outdoors can be used to inspire physical education and your teaching.

Regardless of which training model you follow, you will gain substantial training in a school environment. Many of the partnership schools involved in the delivery of your course are located in and around Leeds to ensure your travelling is limited and you will have the maximum time to prepare your lessons. You will complete three teaching placements in at least two contrasting schools, receiving support from your school mentor and University tutors.

You will learn from lecturers who have been practising teachers and are now active in educational research, benefiting from their practical experience and theoretical knowledge.

We provide ongoing training for all newly qualified teachers. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to enrol on our Newly Qualified Teacher module, providing you with another valuable element of support and coaching as you start your teaching career.

The MA Education programme is aimed at educators and education professionals who want to gain additional knowledge and skills to help improve their practice through a general, rather than specialised, programme of master's level study. It draws upon the expertise across the School of Education giving candidates access to the knowledge and experience of leading researchers across a diverse range of topics. Thus, you will be in a great position to pursue your interests and focus on the topics that suit your career ambitions.

MA Education is unique in the School of Education insofar as there are no modules dedicated to, or associated with, the programme; instead, you select modules that interest you from the other specialised MA programmes offered. These may be modules that explore different aspects of educational leadership, the use of technology to support learning, child development, or teaching English to speakers of other languages among others.

With your own experience of working in an education context, the teaching sessions and our excellent library resources you will soon build your knowledge of educational research methods and apply them to your own dissertation on a related topic. You will also improve your skills in written and oral communication, research and analysis, and leadership: all vital qualities for a career in any sector of education.

This flexible programme may also be studied part-time, but it is important to emphasise that we offer no special provision for part-time students. Teaching sessions and meetings generally occur during the working day so, if you are considering applying for part-time status, you must ensure that you are able to attend at these times.

Course content

You’ll take a core module that explores the principles and methods of educational research, and introduces you to issues such as research ethics and the use of research to improve educational practice for individuals and organisations. You’ll also study two of three additional modules on research methods to expand and sharpen your skills.

You’ll apply your new understanding of the concepts and benefits of educational research to your own dissertation, in preparation for which you'll consult regularly with your appointed supervisor as you independently research an educational topic that may or may not be related to your own practice. We can only accept you onto the programme if, at the application stage, you propose a dissertation on a topic or issue that matches the available supervisory expertise within the School of Education.

Course structure

There are two compulsory modules on this programme. You have to study and pass at least two of the three optional research methods modules, and you’ll normally take two or three from the full range of other optional modules available. Some modules are only available in alternate years. You must select modules that represent a general and balanced programme of study, rather than a specialised one. You will not be permitted to follow modules from one MA programme only, or to focus on one narrow subject or topic, since this will result in a specialised course of study rather than the general one that the MA Education is intended to provide.

Learning and teaching

We use a variety of teaching and learning methods including weekly seminars, group learning, tutorials, fieldwork, online learning and lectures. The methods of teaching and learning that you will encounter depend on which specific modules you choose. Independent study is also vital, as it allows you to pursue your interests and develop high-level skills.

Assessment

You’ll explore how people learn languages and discover the strategies language teachers use to develop the key skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The Language Education team in the School of Education is one of the largest such teams in the UK.

Our members have experience of teaching, teacher education and consultancy work in TESOL, ELT, EFL, ESOL, EAL, Modern Foreign Languages, and Applied Linguistics in many contexts in the UK and around the world, and are nationally and internationally recognised as researchers. 

Course content

You’ll deepen your understanding of TESOL in semester one. You’ll focus on how people learn languages, how to describe and explain language to learners and the approaches you can take to teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

You’ll then focus on aspects of teacher education in semester two. You will consider the goals and processes of teacher education, ideas about training, development and mentoring, the role of the teacher as a researcher, and the principles underpinning the design and implementation of training programmes for TESOL teachers.

In addition, you’ll choose from a range of optional modules on topics such as the use of technology in language learning, grammar and vocabulary teaching, and issues surrounding the assessment of language learning.

You’ll use the knowledge and skills you develop to carry out a small-scale piece of research related to your own interests within teacher education. To help you develop the necessary research skills for this module, you’ll also take the module Research Methods for TESOL, but this will not be assessed as part of the course.

Learning and teaching

You’ll generally have around eight to ten hours of classes per week including seminars, tutorials and lectures. However, independent study is an important aspect of this programme, either alone or in a group, as it allows you to develop key research, analysis and communication skills and develop your own ideas.

Assessment

Most of our modules are assessed through written assignments, from which you’ll often be able to choose from a range of topics. To help you prepare, you’ll be able to submit a draft to your tutor for comment beforehand.

You can choose from two different training models.

University-led: You will develop your theoretical knowledge at our Headingley Campus, which offers a superb learning environment, modern facilities and excellent resources. Your learning will be informed by the very latest research and the expertise of our supportive teaching staff. We will organise your extensive school placements so you can apply your knowledge in a classroom setting and your placements will be timetabled to fit with your taught seminars on campus.

School Direct: For the vast majority of your course, you will be based in your provider school or schools, learning on the job while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will attend our Headingley Campus one day a week (usually a Friday) for key module seminars.

The Education in Primary Care PGCert is for health professionals working and teaching in primary care in the UK. It will suit any primary care educator, including nurse practitioners, GPs, community pharmacists and practice nurses, intending GP trainers and training programme directors.

The programme offers a deep understanding of education in primary care and equips you to succeed in learning and teaching at a wide range of levels and primary care disciplines, as demonstrated by our alumni.

All facilitators on the programme are GP trainers, undergraduate tutors or training programme directors. You’ll benefit from links with current practitioners and expert researchers working at the Academic Unit of Primary Care at the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. You’ll also have the opportunity for one-to-one support from a mentor throughout the programme.

Course content

You’ll study four modules, all focused on primary care. Each module consists of two teaching days alongside online activities and discussions.

You’ll reflect on education in primary care, critically examine key aspects of your work and gain skills and ideas for your own development and the development of others. Students also have the opportunity to critically evaluate current research and contribute to the evidence base in education in primary healthcare.

The programme aims to develop the skills to implement and evaluate a curriculum, as well as critically evaluate consultation models and personal consultation skills. This is the only programme approved by Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber that offers teaching on consultation skills.

Learning and teaching

The programme is taught through a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face learning (at teaching days) with online activities.

Teaching is mostly in small groups with a facilitator, ensuring a personalised learning approach. You’ll learn through lectures, practical classes, tutorials, seminars and supervised research projects. We make extensive use of IT and a wide range of materials is available to enable you to study at your own pace and to enhance and extend on the material taught formally. Besides access to online materials, the Virtual Learning Environment offers continued peer and tutor support.

Assessment

Assessment for all four modules is through written assignments, submitted approximately six weeks after the end of the module.

Career opportunities

This programme is one of the steps in the process to become a GP trainer with Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber. Many successful local educators have completed this programme.

You’ll learn about the experiences and viewpoints of people and nations of the Global South regarding development issues, as well as the inter-relationships between global, national and local actors in contested strategies for development.

You’ll also review strategies, programmes and policies in development, including organisations and donors promoting development, and assess the progress made by different development actors towards key international development goals.

In addition, you’ll explore controversies at the centre of contemporary development challenges and analyse both the theories and realities of development, to understand the different approaches, practices and discourses involved.

Research insight

MA Global Development has a close working relationship with the Global Development and Justice research group that aims to examine central debates within the field of global development from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The Global Development and Justice research group is also actively involved, amongst others, in the Centre for Global Development, a university-wide network that promotes cross-disciplinary approaches to the field, as well as the Leeds Centre for African Studies.

Course content

Core modules examine key issues surrounding global development, such as markets, inequality, democratisation, gender, health, education, human rights, conflict, violence and crime. Additionally, you’ll hone your research and writing skills and then showcase them in your compulsory dissertation – an independent piece of research on a topic of your choice.

You’ll study some of the broader social, political, and economic causes of the problems, and the achievements and setbacks that people have experienced in their efforts to tackle them at the global, national and local levels and improve their societies and lives. Learning and teaching

Modules are conducted through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops. Tutors also provide you with individual advice on written work and you should begin to develop expertise in improving your work through face to face discussion with your tutors, formative assessment and through detailed feedback. You’ll be expected to carry out a good deal of independent, detailed and considered study.

All part-time students attend exactly the same classes as full-time students which usually take place between 9am and 5pm; there are no evening classes.

Designed for TESOL professionals, you will consider how to analyse and describe the English language for pedagogic purposes, and examine different approaches and principles to teaching the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

You can also choose to specialise in certain aspects of TESOL: for example, teacher education, materials development, curriculum reform, the teaching of grammar and vocabulary, the use of ICT, or language assessment.

MEd TESOL follows the same syllabus as the MA TESOL programme, but asks you to apply a more practical, rather than theoretical, orientation to your final critical study. You will focus upon a professional issue within language education and apply ideas from your reading and a small-scale research study to find solutions to genuine English Language teaching problems.

MEd TESOL is a comprehensive programme that will allow you to develop both academically and professionally.

In semester one, you will deepen your understanding of teaching the English Language. You will focus on how people learn languages, how to describe and explain language to learners, and the approaches you can take to teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

In semester two, you will expand your knowledge of more specialist areas. You will choose from a range of optional modules to suit your own interests and professional contexts: for example, the development of TESOL materials, teaching young learners, or language learning assessment. Alternatively, you could choose modules from another area of the School’s provision: for example, you may want to study digital learning, international educational management or theories of childhood and youth.

In the final part of the year, you will use your newly-acquired knowledge and skills to carry out a small-scale piece of research. Your critical study can be related to your own interests within the field of education. As a condition of the MEd programme, your study needs to have a practical focus and respond to a real-life professional issue in TESOL education.

To support your work on the project, you will take a non-assessed research methods course. Help with your academic writing is available throughout the year.

Learning and teaching

You will generally have around eight to ten hours of classes per week including seminars, tutorials and lectures. However, independent study is an important aspect of this programme, either alone or in a group, as it allows you to develop key research, analysis and communication skills and develop your own ideas.

Assessment

We assess most of our modules through written assignments; you will be able to choose from a range of assignment topics. To help you prepare, you’ll be able to submit a draft to your tutor for comment beforehand.

Career opportunities

Our students frequently find that new career opportunities open up for them, either in their home countries or in new international settings.

Some of our graduates have started work in teacher training, materials creation, or curriculum design. Others have started their own private language teaching business or moved from school to university teaching.

We also encourage students who do particularly well on the programme to consider doctoral level study with a view to an academic career. Students who return to their original classrooms often find they have fresh perspectives and their work becomes more rewarding and effective.

Learn to teach this thought-provoking subject which is new to the National Curriculum and is now a required subject at all key stages.

We will equip you with the skills to deliver a stimulating learning environment and inspiring lessons. You could be teaching children how to create their own web page in one lesson, and the next encouraging them to write their own computer program. You will learn how to fire their interest in this constantly evolving subject, helping them to understand the technical aspects of computing in an easy-to-understand way. You will be able to teach them the fundamentals of how computers communicate and connect their understanding of microprocessors. You could even help them to build their own simple computer.

You can choose from two different training models.

University-led: You will develop your theoretical knowledge here at our Headingley Campus, which offers a superb learning environment, modern facilities and excellent resources. Your learning will informed by the very latest research and the expertise of our supportive teaching staff. We will organise your extensive school placements so you can apply your knowledge in a classroom setting and your placements will be timetabled to fit with your taught seminars on campus.

School Direct: For the vast majority of your course, you will be based in your provider school or schools, learning on the job while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will attend our Headingley Campus one day a week (usually a Friday) for key module seminars.

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

You will become part of a supportive teaching and learning community, where you will be able to pick up advice and tips from your course tutors and share ideas on lesson plans and classroom experiences with your fellow students.

Helping you to develop your confidence, identity and style through a critically reflective approach to your practice will form a fundamental element of your training.

To help with your preparations for your course, you will have the opportunity to attend a residential, where you will meet your tutors and fellow trainees, start to develop your support networks and discover how the outdoors can be used to inspire physical education and your teaching.

Regardless of which training model you follow, you will gain substantial training in a school environment. Many of the partnership schools involved in the delivery of your course are located in and around Leeds to ensure your travelling is limited and you will have the maximum time to prepare your lessons. You will complete three teaching placements in at least two contrasting schools, receiving support from your school mentor and University tutors.

You will learn from lecturers who have been practising teachers and are now active in educational research, benefiting from their practical experience and theoretical knowledge.

We provide ongoing training for all newly qualified teachers. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to enrol on our NQT module, providing you with another valuable element of support and coaching as you start your teaching career.

There's lots of support available to help you fund your teaching training. Depending on your degree class, the subject you want to teach and the training programme you follow, you could be eligible for a bursary, a scholarship or even a salary.

Music has an important role to play in secondary school education and can contribute to the development of all pupils, regardless of their previous experience or abilities.

Knowing how to practically apply your musical knowledge and understanding to a classroom environment will be a key element of your training. We will broaden your understanding of how pupils of differing abilities learn, enabling you to plan musical activities, both theoretical and practical, that will inspire all your students and will engage them in all aspects of music and learning.

We will develop you as a music teacher, giving you the skills and confidence to find innovative ways to translate your knowledge into a language pupils can understand. A key element of your training will be the hands-on experience you will acquire in the classroom, giving you the opportunity to grow your sureness, teaching ability and knowledge while trialling different music teaching methods so you can develop your own style.

This course is offered as School Direct only.
