What’s it like to study a Masters in Jönköping?

Jönköping received city status in 1284, placing it among the oldest settlements in Sweden. Although it was caught in the crossfire of various wars between Sweden and Denmark, Jönköping eventually grew into a thriving commercial hub. In particular, the 19th century saw Jönköping become famous for its match production. Jönköping can also claim to offer the world’s only match museum, housed in a former factory building dating back to 1848.

Jönköping’s setting at the southern tip of Lake Vättern means that it’s blessed with easy access to some outstanding natural beauty. Vätterstranden is a 2km-long beach in the town centre, while there are two smaller lakes within the city limits, so you’re never too far from the water. 30km north of Jönköping, the tranquil island of Visingsö was the residence of the Swedish monarchy in the 12th and 13th centuries. Nowadays it’s a popular summer getaway location that you can explore by bike or horse-drawn carriage.

Jönköping University’s accommodation office helps international students find somewhere to live. As a city university, there are no on-campus options but a wide variety of other kinds of student housing exists around Jönköping.
