The Master degree in "ICT for Internet and Multimedia," offered by the University of Padova, captures the evolution of professional engineering figures, and represents a modern teaching offer that combines both solid fundamental knowledge and advanced technological competences. For this reason, the program contains both strong theoretical courses and applied research-oriented teaching towards advanced technologies for the future society. The graduate in "ICT for Internet and Multimedia" is able to master complex systems, manage data, plan strategies, and perform innovative activities in the broad area of ICT, with specific focus on communication networks and signal processing, but also an underlying awareness of the physical reality that enables such systems to operate and communicate.

Several professional figures can be formed by this program, including, but not limited to, transmission and communication specialists, ICT security consultants, multimedia communication engineers, experts of cyber systems, photonics scientists, and professional figures able to use technology for improving life and health.

Other relevant features of this program include a strong cross-disciplinary networking, similar to how the Internet brings together different subsystems; a genuine vocation toward internationalism and diversity, joining different cultures in the same spirit of multimedia communication; and finally, internships and practical experiences on the field with a tight-knit industrial collaboration, to make the ICT society a reality.

Course structure

This degree provides a multidisciplinary education path in the field of information engineering, with an innovative fluid teaching model. This gives the students the ability to mould their expertise towards several specific applied disciplines, while still receiving a solid general-purpose engineering culture.

The course is organized in four curricula:

  • Telecommunications - the classical telecommunication course covering transmission, networks, signal and image processing, electromagnetism and transmission devices
  • Cybersystems – an interdisciplinary curriculum oriented to networks and big data
  • ICT for life and health – an interdisciplinary curriculum oriented to applications in health and life sciences
  • Photonics - an interdisciplinary curriculum towards physics and material sciences

The full list of offered courses (all in English) is available at: http://en.didattica.unipd.it/off/2017/LM/IN/IN2371. Click on the curriculum you are interested in (“degree course tracks” at the beginning of the web page) in order to have a clearer view on the teaching offer.

Why study Internet Technology and Architecture?

Everything is becoming connected - both on small and large scale. More information is being exchanged and data processed than ever before. Complex networks are needed in vehicles and in between vehicles, in data centres and to data centres. These networks are needed to make electric grid, cities and industries smarter. As emerging networks need to serve critical infrastructures as well as diverse application requirements, future network design demands professionals with deep theoretic knowledge, good technical skills, and innovative thinking.

Why choose Internet Technology and Architecture at EIT Digital?

The Master programme in Internet Technology and Architecture (ITA) is in line with the challenging field of computing communication and networking technologies that has lately received considerable attention and is today considered as a major topic for most recent curriculum studies in Information Technology (IT). The rapid evolution of the discipline has a profound effect on IT education, affecting both content and pedagogy. The programme also equips students with both theoretical and practical concepts through analytical processes and tools that will develop critical thinking skills in assessing entrepreneurship opportunities and devising appropriate strategies and tactics in developing an idea into a profitable business venture.

The aim of this programme is to provide the students with rigorous theoretical knowledge of current research issues as well as detailed practical experience of network design, development, implementation, operations, applications, systems and services. Students will acquire the skills to contribute to future developments in the field of Network design and implementation.

This Master’s degree is offered by leading universities in the area of network architectures and technologies. Graduates will be prepared for careers in advanced research and/or industry. They will also be equipped with the skillset to start their own technology business.

What are the career opportunities?

As networks become critical components in traditional industries such as transportation, energy and health services, new sectors are demanding communication and networking professionals. Upon successful completion of the ITA master's programme, students qualify both in technical and business roles.

Potential employers include large corporations as well as small enterprises, working on the design, engineering and production of communication components, devices and systems. Graduates easily find work as developers, network planners, consultants and ICT managers to plan, manage and maintain large networked computer systems that support modern distributed enterprise systems. They can also create their own business.

This programme also aims to provide detailed knowledge and critical understanding of the theoretical and conceptual frameworks for an R&D career both in academia and industry, with an ability to continue in a follow-up PhD project.

How is the programme structured?

All EIT Digital Master School programmes follow the same scheme:

  • Students study one year at an ‘entry’ university and one year at an ‘exit’ university in two of EIT Digital’s hot spots around Europe.
  • Upon completion, graduates receive degrees from the two universities and a certificate awarded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
  • The first year is similar at all entry points with basic courses to lay the foundation for the chosen technical programme focus. Some elective courses may also be chosen. At the same time, students are introduced to business and management. During the second semester, a design project is combined with business development exercises. These teach how to turn technology into business and how to present a convincing business plan.
  • In between the first year and the second year, a summer school addresses business opportunities within a socially relevant theme.
  • The second year offers a specialisation and a graduation project. The gradation project includes an internship at a company or a research institute and results in a Master thesis with a strong innovation and entrepreneurship dimension.

The aim of the Web and Digital Design program is to develop professionals within the industry who are able to plan, produce, and share knowledge in an effective way.

The program offers an experimental pathway at the forefront of design, marketing, and technology. Students blend sound design competence with strategic vision, knowledge of technical aspects and project management skills in order to coordinate all the different stages in the development process.

The program incorporates art direction and design, content, solid technical skills and an in-depth background in digital marketing and communication.

The curriculum is a balance between theoretical teaching and practical tasks. Project-based activities in particular are central to the learning experience and leverage abilities and information acquired in the other courses.

Projects follow a professional workflow, which encompasses the definition of the digital strategy, the interaction model and users' journey, the design of the interface and its look and feel, the creation of a prototype using front/back end programming tools.

As the user experience is increasingly developing through social media, companies are changing their business accordingly. This new and thrilling scenario is deeply investigated with specific regard to the integration of content and navigation flow between websites, search, and social platforms. The overall didactic experience provides the students with professional abilities, allowing them to engage in dialogue with the different figures involved in digital media projects.

The course lasts 15 months (from October until December) and is entirely taught in English language.

After passing the final exam, eligible students will obtain a Master’s Degree from IULM and SPD. The Master corresponds to 60 ECTS credits.

Founded in Milan in 1954, SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the first postgraduate school for design disciplines in Italy. Situated in Milan, the capital of design, Scuola Politecnica di Design pioneered design education thanks to its solid grounding and to its peculiar approach integrating different domains: ergonomics, art, perception studies, semiotics.

Today, SPD is an international laboratory for the exchange of ideas, experience and creativity in order to develop projects. Since its foundation the school has welcomed an extraordinary community of students from various countries and backgrounds.

All courses are taught in a personalized and small learning environment promoting easy contact with the faculty and the staff. Indeed, at SPD every student is followed individually by a faculty formed by designers, professionals from different fields and visiting tutors.

The masters programs offered by SPD are organized in collaboration with IULM University, and award academic degrees recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, The University and Research MIUR, corresponding to 60 credits under the ECTS system.

The teaching method at Scuola Politecnica di Design is arranged into intensive workshops, studio classes, theoretical lectures, seminars and visits. Research work is carried out in collaboration with leading companies such as Volkswagen, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Heineken, IKEA, Artemide and Poltrona Frau Group among the others.

These projects are deveopped according to an interdisciplinary approach which is a testing ground for the student’s skills, from the concept idea to its execution.
