The MA in History of Art (with a Term in Rome) provides a structured introduction to postgraduate study of the history and philosophy of art.

It includes a term in Rome where we run the MA with the American University of Rome (who provide accommodation and facilities). A range of themes and approaches are considered in this MA with a particular focus on medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art in Italy. The first term is taught in Canterbury.

During the term in Rome, this MA focuses on the art of Rome with a core course that spans almost two millennia and examines the changing face of the eternal city. This core spends more time on the period 1400-1700, which is also the period from which a second course is chosen from a range of topics. You will study the art of Rome first hand, visiting relevant sites and museums, with options to study the history of Rome and specific artists. Kent staff are present for part of the spring term in Rome to ensure continuity of academic guidance and pastoral support.

The programme is intended for graduates in art history and other arts subjects. It gives you the opportunity to pursue your interest in visual art at advanced level, to develop a high level of expertise in topics in history and philosophy of art and to prepare for doctoral research in history of art.

Course structure

You take one core module and one optional module during your first term in Canterbury and your second term in Rome. Over the course of these two terms you discuss with the course director your ideas and plans for your 15,000-word dissertation. The writing of the dissertation takes place in the summer with completion in August.

Michelangelo in Rome

This seminar on Michelangelo examines the work of the Renaissance master; his sculpture, painting, architecture and literary production. His works are investigated within their specific historical context, focusing on issues of commission, iconography, censorship, biography, historiography and aesthetics. An excursion to Florence is also planned. Beyond a complete comprehension of Michelangelo’s work, the course aims toward a mastery of art historical research skills, the evaluation of current scholarship and independent critical thought on art.

The environment we live in nowadays is very complex and the architect is forced to work on the existing heritage paying particular attention to its sustainability and considering the enviroment together with the built heritage as a resource to protect.
The new MSc programme "Architectural Design and History" is offering a study plan based on this very attitude.
Its mission is to train students to be cultured architects, well-aware of the historic and artistic context in which they work as well as of the other cultural fields.
New designs shall be included in and compared to the already existing ones.
The respect of the built heritage is the starting point for the new design to become a reutilization project, a requalification project, sometimes even completion and new integration.

Politecnico di Milano, a distinguished University in the field of heritage preservation and valorization, decided to launch a new MSc programme in Mantova Campus: Architectural Design and History.
The rich and well-preserved heritage of the city of Mantova, the presence of the UNESCO site and the dedicated facilities of the Mantova Campus are the ideal conditions to host this programme. In addition, the curriculum is launched in cooperation with the “Mantua Unesco Chair”, which will offer dedicated scholarships for graduates, international internships, summer schools and open lectures held by world-famous architects. From the a.y. 2015/2016 Eduardo Souto de Moura is going to teach at Mantova Campus
as full professor of Architectural Design in Historical Context. In the “Mantua Unesco Chair”, Politecnico di Milano leads a worldwide network of twelve highly qualified universities, heritage research and management centres. These synergies will considerably enrich the education, training and career opportunities of the students. The programme is taught in English eventhough some of the elective subjects will be offered in Italian.

During the course "The Italian System: from Fashion to Design" we will study the synergistic roles that the areas of fashion marketing play within companies in the implementation of the most appropriate strategies to design new types of products.
In particular, within the concept of brand extension we will face how to develop a project, from strategy and organization to the creation and design of the products to be placed on the market.
It is a multi-faceted activity that embraces "value-added brands", and it is increasingly sought and practiced. In this context, we will learn the most innovative branding strategies for new products: the choice between line or brand extensions, the launch of new brands or sub-brands, et.
The course is structured in a series of "lessons" and a "workshop of ideas" in which information and method blend into the complete picture of the "know how" to work in different kind of teams: companies, professional studios, as a freelancer or as an employee, as a business owner and developer of start-ups dedicated to the fashion and design industry.
The teaching methodology is very innovative as it addresses in a synergistic and transverse way the different topics covered in the course, which are related to each other by a direction that allows the student to determine a long term learning path crossing over all subjects

The teaching model is composed as follows:
- In classroom lectures
- Case studies
- Company visits
- Project Works
- Sessions of career orientation and/or review on business ideas

Traditional in classroom lectures are alternated with case discussions, meetings with managers and other representatives of the business community, company visits, in class activities and project works.
Career orientation will be provided to the students that aim at working in the industry; feedbacks to the business ideas will be shared with participants that are willing to become entrepreneurs.
At the end of the course a MFI certificate is delivered to each student.

As public sector funding for the arts has become restricted, there is an increasing need for well qualified arts administrators, who are able to work at the interface between artistic creativity and sound business practice. The growth of the arts and the creative industries has created a need for well qualified arts administrators. This MA has the potential to shape a new breed of professionals in the arts management field by offering Liberal Arts, Humanities, Fine Arts, Film, Media and Communication graduates the opportunity to acquire the appropriate management and business skills, thus enabling them to capitalize upon their previous grounding within the arts.

Thanks to AUR’s connections and collaborations with numerous artistic and cultural institutions both in Rome and in Italy, this MA also offers the opportunity to gain invaluable professional experience. Rome and Italy are especially attractive for the study of arts, in general, and arts management in particular, given enormous resources that are available to scholars, art world professionals and students. Italy has a long and rich tradition of collecting, sponsoring and exhibiting visual arts. A special advantage available to students of Arts Management in Italy is a possibility to study some of the world’s oldest private collections and a specific system of patronage in the arts. Students will have an opportunity to conduct their research and internship in Roman and Italian arts institutions, some of which exist for centuries and manage the world’s most prestigious collections. The complexity of today’s globalizing art world requires a diverse set of knowledge and skills. The range of potential responsibilities of arts administrators requires a graduate program which will give future art managers in depth knowledge about the structure of the contemporary art world, the nature of artistic and cultural values in general in connection to their market value, a solid knowledge of the business and market principles, in their application to the sphere of artistic and cultural production, as well as high level skills that will make future professionals in the arts management desirable candidates for a variety of posts in particular institutions of the art world, such as museums, galleries, art fairs and media reporting on art and analyzing the current artistic scene. The AUR’s MA in Arts Management enables students to acquire basic skills in the fundamental areas of art management and art administration, giving them an opportunity, through the selection of elective courses and internship experience to specialize in a particular area of their interest.

Learning Outcomes
With the MA program in Arts Management, AUR’s mission is to educate future professionals with an advanced knowledge of the contemporary art world and art administration/art management, who would be able to apply their knowledge in the global society. Upon completing the program students will be able to apply their knowledge and skills in all areas identified as the needed in the contemporary art world and art market. Students will be able to demonstrate:

• Advanced skills in the sphere of institutional management, which includes: in-depth knowledge of the way in which the key institutions of the contemporary art world (such as museums, galleries, art fairs, auction houses, art dealers and private collectors, and art media) function, the ability to design and carry out institutional strategic plans, and the ability to organize teamwork and recognize individual potentials of team members

• Advanced skills in the sphere of art project management, in particular: capacity to design and carry out demanding projects, such as international exhibitions, art fairs, logistics in realization of major art projects, artistic projects of the alternative artistic production and emerging artistic scenes, fundraising abilities (the ability to locate potential donors, such as art foundations, governmental and non-governmental organizations that sponsor art projects, and individual contributors), knowledge of basics of the financial management, which enables future professionals to design budgets and work with multiple financial sources

• Advanced knowledge of art market principles, including: market, social, political and cultural factors that structure the art market, specific features of the art market and institutions of art in Europe, USA, and emerging art markets across the globe, structure of the market price of artworks and factors that influence the price of artworks

• Advanced knowledge of relevant art theories, that explain and contextualize the complex artistic production and functioning of the contemporary art world, with the focus on: the value of art and how the cultural and aesthetic values are related to the market value, the broader social status of creativity and creative inquiry and the ways in which creative works are valorized, understanding the dynamics of the globalizing art market and the complexity of theoretical issues that the globalizing art world and art market pose, that involve ideological, economic and political issues, in addition to aesthetic ones

• Advanced knowledge of the social and cultural role of particular institutions of the art, such as museums, galleries, art fairs, public art projects and art publications

• Advanced knowledge of curatorial practices and exhibition design principles

• Students will also be able to clearly demonstrate that they have acquired the following abilities and skills: research skills, necessary to study at the graduate level and to write research papers, the ability to plan and execute an extensive research project, high level analytical skills, and the ability to communicate ideas and arguments effectively.

A vital aspect of the learning process will also be the exposure of students to the cultural diversity of Rome and of Italy, and to make the most of the opportunities for on-site teaching visits.
