Learning objectives

During the first year, students will study the foundations of economics and quantitative analysis, whereas the second year is devoted to field courses that will expose them to recent developments at the frontier of economic research in a variety of topics. At the end of the second year students will work on their final dissertation. The curriculum also offers an internship program with either economic research institutions located in the Milan area or within the University’s Department of Economics and Finance, where student are offered the opportunity to work as an applied economists on real world economic issues, as well as meeting prospective employers. The skills acquired through the M.Sc. in Economics prepare students to pursue their careers both in academia through further education at the Ph.D. level as well as in the labour market as applied economists in firms, banks and institutions.

The M.Sc. is now at its sixth edition and so far it has performed very well in terms of placement in the labour market (Eurizone, Deloitte, Oxford Policy Management, Intesa San Paolo) and in the academia (some of our student are now completing their Ph.D.s at Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona, University of Nottingham, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, and include winners of prestigious scholarships granted by the Bank of Italy).

The Master in Economics and Finance is a graduate program, that allows students to complete their training in economics providing them with a thorough understanding of the role and working of the state in modern economies.

The Master is a full-time, intensive course, with a maximum enrollment of 20 students. The Master offers courses taught in English and it is accessible to students of all countries. The diploma, issued by Università Cattolica, is recognized as a second level Master’s degree by the Italian Government.

Learning objectives

The Master will allow students to acquire the needed knowledge and research experience in order to pursue further studies with a Ph.D. in Economics; allow them to integrate their academic experience with professional skills of theoretical and practical relevance.

Graduate students are invited to take part in the Seminar series, which is organized by the Department of Economics and Finance on a weekly basis. Project work and final exam

The Master is granted upon the completion of all the course- work and of a research project by which the candidate shows her/his ability to dominate the topics covered in the coursework undertaken in the first three terms. Typically the research project takes the form of a research paper written under the supervision of a member of the Master faculty or of a researcher approved by the Director of the Master. Under certain circumstances, a student may have the opportunity to undertake an internship on a project that is evaluated by the Director of the Master being consistent with the Master goals. In these cases, the research paper can be substituted by an essay detailing the results achieved during the internship, to be written under the supervision of a member of the faculty and/or of the external tutor supervising the internship activity. Both in the case of a research paper and of an internship essay, the candidate will have to defend the results of her/his research during an oral final exam, in which the overall performance of the candidate in the Master will also be assessed.

The Master is taught entirely in English to a fairly small but varied class of students from all over the world, by a faculty that is very active in research and well integrated in international professional networks. Occasional mini-courses and lectures by leading international scholars, as well as a year-long seminar series complete our offer.

The Master in Economics continues the pioneering tradition of the Master in Economics created 20 years ago by the consortium Coripe Piemonte. That program, the first of its kind in Italy, prepared many bright Italian and foreign students, who now hold prominent academic or professional jobs in Italy or abroad. The new Master program in Economics builds on the strengths of the previous program and, at the same time, has been reshaped in order to compete with similar successful Master programs in Europe.
The Master in Economics endows its graduates with an excellent working knowledge of the analytic tools and advanced methodologies required for the study of current issues in Economics. The courses are taught in English by the faculty of the Collegio recruited from the best schools on the international academic job market. In addition to their coursework, master students interact with the faculty, fellows, visiting fellows and researchers of the Collegio. Ca’ Foscari University is now offering a curriculum completely taught in English (LM-77 - Scienze economico-aziendali - Management) in the MSc (Master of Science/Laurea Magistrale) degree in "Economia e Finanza – Economics and Finance".

This Master's Degree Programme specialising in finance involves two years of full-time study. It aims to prepare experts with proficiency in dealing with the main issues related to financial markets, brokerage management, financial investment management and financial risk measurement and management, financial consultancy and insurance, supplementary allowance and retirement funds management, internal organisation processes and administrative management of banks and financial institutions in general.

The Master's Degree Programme also offers the opportunity of participating in adouble degree programme in cooperation with the University Aix Marseille (France) and of obtaining a Double Master’s Degree in Economics, Econometrics and Finance (MEEF), for which scholarships are available. The programme draws upon a balanced blend of economic and mathematical methods to form specialists capable of contributing to the sustainable development of society and of providing prompt responses to economic crises. The Master in Data Science for Complex Economic Systems is a one year full-time postgraduate program (II level Master Degree) taught in English and welcomes students from different disciplines (e.g. economics, physics, computer science and political science).
The Master provides theoretical and methodological tools to understand and analyse complex systems which typically exhibit nonlinear behaviour resulting from the interaction of heterogeneous agents, hierarchy and continuous innovation. These properties require exploring new visions and expanding education beyond the frontier of traditional economic studies. In addition to the standard toolkit of economics and econometrics, the program takes a path-breaking perspective on advanced analytics, including big data, machine-learning network analysis, and agent-based simulation. Students will also acquire sound knowledge of sociolinguistic and communication processes, as well familiarity with IT and electronic means of communication, both in general and with reference to their language of specialization.

The final exam consists in writing a thesis, which must possess the characters of originality, exhaustive documentation and scientific investigation and which will be discussed with a committee of university professors and experts.
