These include the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque, sacred to the Islamic faith and believed to be where Muhammad ascended to heaven; the Western Wall, the holiest place of prayer for Jews; and the Church of Holy Sepulchre considered the place of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection.

Universities in Jerusalem

Founded in 1918, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is the second oldest university in Israel and one of its most prestigious higher education institutions. With its first board of Governors including famous visionaries such as Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud, the university still prides itself on its connections with bright minds and Noble Prizewinners. In what are known as the Albert Einstein Archives, the university has conserved about 55,000 of Einstein’s documents, including personal correspondence with his wife. Out of its student body, roughly 5% are international students, and many Masters programmes are taught in English.

The official language of Israel is Hebrew, but other languages, including English, are spoken by much of the population in Jerusalem.
