It is also home of around 23,500 students, studying in the highly-esteemed Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
What's it like to study a Masters in Jerusalem?
Jerusalem’s 5,000 years of history have been rich and varied and the city has developed a complex cultural and historical character, reflected in its heritage, architecture and powerful spiritual atmosphere. As a student in Jerusalem today, you will have the unique opportunity to become immersed in the city’s distinct aura, exploring at your leisure the numerous sites, marketplaces, alleys and monuments.
The Old City, which until 1860 contained the entirety of Jerusalem, is divided into four quarters known as the Muslim Quarter, Christian Quarter, Armenian Quarter and Jewish Quarter. This part of Jerusalem is the location of the Temple Mount, home to sites of enormous religious significance. These include the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque, sacred to the Islamic faith and believed to be where Muhammad ascended to heaven; the Western Wall, the holiest place of prayer for Jews; and the Church of Holy Sepulchre considered the place of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection.
Beyond the Old City, Jerusalem boasts a contemporary image, with many bars, restaurants and clubs for international students to relax in. Museums, galleries, theatres and national parks complete the city’s fusion of modern and ancient. Regardless of whether you choose Jerusalem for your Masters study or not, the city’s extraordinary legacy should certainly make a strong candidate for your list of places to visit.

In what are known as the Albert Einstein Archives, the university has conserved about 55,000 of Einstein’s documents, including personal correspondence with his wife. Out of its student body, roughly 5% are international students, and many Masters programmes are taught in English.
The official language of Israel is Hebrew, but other languages, including English, are spoken by much of the population in Jerusalem.
