The Higher Diploma in Statistics course is designed for graduates whose degrees have substantial mathematical content, and who want to develop their expertise in the application of statistical methods and broaden their career opportunities. The course may also be taken as a foundation for entry into the MSc Degree in Statistics. The course may be taken over one year (full time) or two years (part time).

There is a continuing demand by employers for numerate graduates. There are many new opportunities in commerce, government, industry, medicine and research for graduates who have added to their first degree with the training in quantitative and computing skills provided by the Higher Diploma in Statistics.

Course Details

This course provides you with a thorough theoretical grounding in statistics as well as a giving you practical experience of analysing real data.

Format

The Higher Diploma in Statistics consists of coursework divided into nine core modules. These modules are a blend of theoretical and applied statistics.

Students attend an average of 12 lectures, three tutorials and three computer practicals per week over the 24-week academic year. All modules have elements of continuous assessment which you submit throughout the course.

Lectures, tutorials and computer practicals take place between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Friday/

Probability and Mathematical Statistics (10 credits)
Statistical Theory (10 credits)
Introduction to Regression Analysis (5 credits)
Data Analysis I (5 credits)
Generalised Linear Models (5 credits)
Time Series (5 credits)
Survival Analysis (5 credits)
Current Topics in Statistics I (5 credits)
Statistical Consulting (10 credits)

The applied modules also equip you with advanced practical software-oriented skills in popular statistical software packages such as R, SAS andSPSS.

Students taking the part-time option take 25 credits in year 1 and the remaining 35 credits in year 2.

Assessment

Five modules (30 credits) are examined exclusively by continuous assessment. The remaining four modules (30 credits) are examined by both continuous assessment (worth 20% of the module mark) and end-of-year written examinations (worth 80% of the module mark).

The continuous assessments can be written home-work, computer practical assignments, in-class tests, written data analysis reports or computer practical examinations.

Careers

The course offers you the opportunity for further study at master’s degree level or employment in areas such as medical research, the pharmaceutical industry, government departments/agencies, sales and marketing research, finance and banking, the insurance industry and software development and support.

This course is designed for graduates of quantitative disciplines who want to kick-start a career in actuary. It provides a solid foundation in statistics, financial mathematics, economics and business finance. Upon completion of the course, your knowledge and skills could be applied to a range of industries in the financial services such as insurance, pensions, healthcare, banking, investment and risk assessment.

You will be equipped with mathematical and statistical knowledge and problem-solving skills to help businesses and institutions evaluate the long-term financial implications of the decisions they make. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a minor dissertation involving the study of a number of problems specific to the insurance and financial sector.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries has approved programme-level exemption status for the MSc programme in Actuarial Science at UCC in respect of their first 8 Core Technical subjects. Students may be recommended for exemption from the Institute’s own professional examinations in up to 7 of these Core Technical subjects by performing sufficiently well in the corresponding examinations of the MSc programme. UCC is one of the very few universities in Ireland which can offer students the potential to receive this level of exemptions from the professional actuarial examinations.

Course detail

This is exciting course allows you to kick-start your career in actuary. It has similar core technical coverage to UCC’s very successful undergraduate course, which, over the last number of years, has achieved close to 100% employment. Graduates of this course are expected to also have no difficulty in gaining employment.

Format

The teaching methods used will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, computer practicals and directed study. You can expect to have approximately 22 hours per week of lectures, tutorials and directed study in semesters 1 and 2 and about 10 hours per week of directed study in semester 3.

Part-time students take modules ST6001, ST6003 and PA6007 in Year 1 and the remaining modules, including electives where appropriate, in Year 2.

Assessment

All taught modules in this course are assessed via a combination of end-of-module examination and submission of a portfolio of research and directed study.

For actuarial exemption purposes, the appointed actuarial independent examiner will base their recommendations for an exemption in the corresponding CT subject, on a student's performance in the final examination

For the research module (ST6009), you will study a number of problems, specific to the insurance and financial sector, and use the methodologies developed in the earlier modules to analyse such problems and produce oral and written reports on your work.

An actuarial qualification gives an excellent grounding in subjects like economics, finance, mathematics, and statistics, as well as the more actuarial subjects. This makes actuarial graduates suitable for a range of careers, not just actuarial work.

Data analytics/science is the science of extracting insight from large amounts of raw data in order to enable better understanding of the processes that created it and so help in analysis, theory exploration and decision making. These techniques can be applied in the natural science, social science and business domains.
The Higher Diploma in Data Analytics is a new, purpose designed course which has been carefully designed to address industry needs. The course is a collaboration between the Departments of Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science and the National Centre for Geocomputation.
The modules are designed to give students the knowledge and skills to collect, process, analyse and visualise data in order to extract useful information, explore statistical patterns, test hypotheses, and explore the implications of models.

Course Structure

Students will gain skills in programming, statistics and databases, followed by an advanced module on statistical machine learning. The course includes material on the social and ethical consequences of the use of data and the implications for business and government. Applications from many industry sectors will be explored in our Case studies module. In the Project module, students will put these technical skills in to practice. They will also gain experience in report writing, presentations and teamwork. Our Workplace preparation module will help students transfer these skills to the workplace.

The Data Analytics jobs market is expanding in Ireland. Jobs are available in any industry or sector that collects data, ranging from IT, to Healthcare, Finance, Food science and Travel.

Currently students without sufficient statistical background knowledge can attain Masters level proficiency by first completing the Higher Diploma in Statistics followed by the MSc in Statistics, which together takes 2 years. The MA in Statistics provides an alternative pathway in 16 months. There is no comparable programme in Ireland or the UK.

Career Options

The MLitt acts as a gateway to the PhD (Arts) which is the main entry degree for careers in research and third level teaching. However, many postgraduate research graduates take up employment in areas such as Industry, Commerce, Banking and Finance, Insurance, Software Development, Process Engineering or Education.

A 2009 study in the US found that the best three jobs in terms of income, work environment, and other factors were Mathematician, Actuary, and Statistician, all jobs suited to Mathematics and Statistics graduates.
