Overview

Given the wider development of Citizen GIS and an increased public awareness and knowledge of the power and value of spatial data, vastly increased amounts of such data from different sources are now available to researchers. However, in order to turn these data into useful information, they must be efficiently managed, processed and analysed before being displayed in a comprehensible format. Geographical Information Systems and the associated field of Remote Sensing greatly aid us in such tasks. The course is equally split between both parts - GIS and Remote Sensing - with four core module introducing the theory and practice of both subject at an introductory and advanced level. Geographical Information Systems or GIS as they are better known, are widely used in a wide variety of subject fields across the physical and social sciences and even in the humanities, with applicability in everything from archaeology and astronomy to geomorphology and globalisation to soil science and social planning. Remote Sensing – the analysis and interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery – has transformed the manner in which we view the Earth. The synoptic view of the Earth that it has given us has greatly improved our understanding of atmospheric and oceanic processes, sustained environmental management and the interaction of humans with the natural world. It is now a standard research tool in many fields such as geology, geography, pollution control, agriculture and climatology. Additional optional modules in Programming, Spatial Databases and Remote Sensing of the Subsurface are also available to students who want to develop the technical side more fully, though the course has a strong applied flavour throughout. In addition, all students complete a work placement in the Summer months which allows them to gain valuable practical experience to test and develop the skills learnt across the course.

Aims of the Course

- To provide highly qualified, motivated graduates who have been trained in Geographical Information Systems, Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing and who can apply the information technology skills they obtain.

- To produce marketable graduates who will make significant contributions to GIS and RS application areas including; industry, government, academia, the community and voluntary sector and other public and private bodies.

- To provide an understanding of Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing, the technology involved and its applications for specific investigations.

The MSc Management Information and Managerial Accounting Systems (MSc MIMAS) is a full-time degree running for 15 months from the date of first registration. Course Detail

The course introduces you to the foundational concepts of GIS, RS and cartography in the first teaching period, with lectures and practical classes which explore the underlying principles of the subjects. These skills are developed in the second teaching period with more advanced digital image processing, spatial analysis and computer programming, again taught through lectures and practical classes.

Running throughout both teaching periods are modules which develop your research skills and explore the applications, technologies and systems of geoinformatics. These modules are taught through a variety of methods which include workshops, seminars, fieldtrips, conferences, site visits, group projects and independent study.

Leading national and international geoinformatics practitioners are invited to lead seminars highlighting industrial, commercial and governmental applications and, where applicable, to demonstrate different equipment used in the discipline. You are encouraged to explore your own interests in geoinformatics through self-directed studies, oral presentations, networking with professional researchers and attending the annual national GIS and RS conferences held each autumn.

One of the highlights of the teaching period is the weekend field trip which allows students to gain hands-on experience with a variety of different instruments and to experience the complete data acquisition, processing, evaluation and presentation chain.

When you complete the taught modules you are eligible to undertake the research project in an area of your own choice within the geoinformatics discipline over a four month period from May to September. This research may be undertaken in the university or with the support of a commercial placement organised by you and culminates in a 15,000 word thesis. All students have a dedicated computer in the masters’ lab in the Department of Geography and are provided with student copies of relevant software as well as access to departmental equipment as necessary for research projects.

Format

During the two teaching periods, there are daily classes that typically consist of one to two hours of morning lectures followed by two to three hours of afternoon practical sessions in the computer lab. For every hour of taught classes, students are expected to spend two to three hours on self-directed study. An overnight stay may be required for attendance at the national conferences, depending on their location, but the weekend field trip is within easy travelling distance of Cork. Students are made aware of the dates of these events at the earliest opportunity and they are a compulsory part of the course.

Placement and Study Abroad Information

While there are no compulsory placement requirements as part of the course, you are actively encouraged to seek opportunities to develop your skills in a commercial environment as part of the independent research project. Several successful partnerships have been developed in this way, resulting in students having access to data and knowledge not available in-house and enabling them to undertake novel and innovative research that directly supports the work of a commercial or government enterprise.

Assessment

Because of the very practical nature of the subject, there is a large element of coursework with some of the taught modules assessed entirely through computer-based exercises, written reports, projects and practical activities. Some modules are also assessed through a combination of coursework and examination at the end of each of the two teaching periods. Students are assessed on valuable transferable skills that include written, mathematical, problem-solving and oral assignments, many of which are completed individually or in small groups.

Careers

You will gain a wide variety of technical skills on this programme, including computer-based activities and use of field instruments. You are also made aware of the importance of theoretical concepts, policy initiatives and commercial constraints and limitations which impact on the use of geoinformatics in the workplace. Many transferable skills are also fostered through different learning approaches, including critical thinking, problem-solving, report writing, oral presentations, statistical analysis, independent research and time management.

Spatial eHumanities is a truly interdisciplinary programme combining geocomputation, cultural heritage, design, and humanities/arts research. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to focus on spatio-temporal concepts, methods, and tools in the development of computational and visual frameworks from which to explore the past and better understand our present.

The MSc in Spatial eHumanities has been jointly designed by An Foras Feasa and the National Centre for Geocomputation to provide both a historical background and theoretical grounding to the field while providing students with solid skills in contemporary digital methods and technologies, including Geographic Information Systems and 3D computer graphics modelling. It is also excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue a computationally-enabled PhD in the arts, humanities, social science, or digital cultural heritage.

Students have opportunities to:

Learn how to use open source and proprietary geographical information systems (GIS) software such as QGIS and ArcGIS;
Become familiar with standards and methods common to digital humanities including XML, TEI, and Dublin Core;
Learn how to create virtual worlds and acquire an expertise in computer graphic design for cultural heritage;
Become actively involved in current Spatial eHumanities projects;
Learn how to encode literary and historical sources, as well as newer sources (such as social media) to identify and visualise spatial and temporal networks and patterns;
Gain practical project-based experience and project management skills by becoming an intern in a cultural heritage institution, a commercial organisation, or a digital spatial project;
Learn programming languages and apply these to spatial and temporal data in the various fields of the arts/humanities, archaeology, and geography.
The course is delivered in our state-of-the-art facilities in An Foras Feasa and National Centre for Geocomputation (Iontas Building, North Campus), which include the MakersLab for Computational Imaging and 3D Printing projects, the Digital Humanities Lab with high-end desktop computers for computer graphics and image processing, the Green Screen Studio for audio-visual recording, and the GIS Lab

Course Structure

90 ECTS are needed to complete the Masters. The course is comprised of the following elements:

Required Taught Modules: 40 ECTS*

Elective Taught Modules: 20 ECTS

Project and Dissertation: 30 ECTS

*Required modules include 1) Mapping and Modelling Space and Time; 2) Intro to Geographical Information Science; 3) Digital Heritage: Theories, Methods and Challenges; 4) Digital Humanities Practicum (10 ECTS each). All modules are integral to the building of practical and theoretical knowledge of the discipline, its development and its intersection with public projects. The Digital Humanities Practicum module guarantees students a work placement at a cultural heritage institution or on a Digital Humanities project.

Part-time students are advised to register for ‘Mapping and Modelling Space and Time’ in the first semester, while working for the ‘Digital Humanities Practicum’ in the second year of the course.

Applicants with little previous programming experience, are advised to register for ‘Structured Programming’, an intensive 3-week 90-hour pre-semester laboratory-based programming course.

Elective Modules in the second semester provide students with specialised skills either on geocomputation or 3D modelling. Students who don’t register for the pre-semester structured programming module can register for both geocomputation and 3D modelling-related modules therefore getting a much broader specialisation in the field of Spatial eHumanities.

The project and dissertation will be undertaken over the last semester of the course and will be individually supervised or co-supervised by an academic from one or both of the contributing departments.

For students who wish not to write a final thesis, this course is also offered as a postgraduate diploma in Spatial eHumanities.

This course would be attractive to professionals in the cultural heritage and library sectors to update existing skills to work specifically with spatial data. It would also be attractive to computer scientists wishing to work with new datasets being created by the cultural heritage sector as well as organisations such as Google (e.g. Google Books, Google Cultural Institute, and Google Maps). It takes an interdisciplinary approach to focus on spatio-temporal concepts, methods, and tools in the development of computational and visual frameworks from which to explore the past and better understand our present.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Spatial eHumanities has been jointly designed by An Foras Feasa and the National Centre for Geocomputation to provide both a historical background and theoretical grounding to the field while providing students with solid skills in contemporary digital methods and technologies, including Geographic Information Systems and 3D computer graphics modelling. It is also excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue a computationally-enabled PhD in the arts, humanities, social science, or digital cultural heritage.

Students have opportunities to:

Learn how to use open source and proprietary geographical information systems (GIS) software such as QGIS and ArcGIS;
Become familiar with standards and methods common to digital humanities including XML, TEI, and Dublin Core;
Learn how to create virtual worlds and acquire an expertise in computer graphic design for cultural heritage;
Become actively involved in current Spatial eHumanities projects;
Learn how to encode literary and historical sources, as well as newer sources (such as social media) to identify and visualise spatial and temporal networks and patterns;
Gain practical project-based experience and project management skills by becoming an intern in a cultural heritage institution, a commercial organisation, or a digital spatial project;
Learn programming languages and apply these to spatial and temporal data in the various fields of the arts/humanities, archaeology, and geography.
The course is delivered in our state-of-the-art facilities in An Foras Feasa and National Centre for Geocomputation (Iontas Building, North Campus), which include the MakersLab for Computational Imaging and 3D Printing projects, the Digital Humanities Lab with high-end desktop computers for computer graphics and image processing, the Green Screen Studio for audio-visual recording, and the GIS Lab.

Course Structure

60 ECTS are needed to complete the Diploma. The course is comprised of the following elements:

Required Taught Modules: 40 ECTS*

Elective Taught Modules: 20 ECTS

*Required modules include 1) Mapping and Modelling Space and Time; 2) Intro to Geographical Information Science; 3) Digital Heritage: Theories, Methods and Challenges; 4) Digital Humanities Practicum (10 ECTS each). All modules are integral to the building of practical and theoretical knowledge of the discipline, its development and its intersection with public projects. The Digital Humanities Practicum module guarantees students a work placement at a cultural heritage institution or on a Digital Humanities project.

Applicants with little previous programming experience, are advised to register for ‘Structured Programming’, an intensive 3-week 90-hour pre-semester laboratory-based programming course which takes place in late August running into early September.

Elective Modules in the second semester provide students with specialised skills either on geocomputation or 3D modelling. Students who don’t register for the pre-semester structured programming module can register for both geocomputation and 3D modelling-related modules therefore getting a much broader specialisation in the field of Spatial eHumanities.

Career Options

This course would be attractive to professionals in the cultural heritage and library sectors to update existing skills to work specifically with spatial data. It would also be attractive to computer scientists wishing to work with new datasets being created by the cultural heritage sector as well as organisations such as Google (e.g. Google Books, Google Cultural Institute, and Google Maps). This MSc would also be attractive to students wishing to go into fields such as GIS and spatial consultancy, government departments that work with spatial data (e.g. Office of Public Works). Potential graduates would also be skilled in areas of content and data analysis and recommender systems in organisations such as TripAdvisor and Amazon.

This M.Sc. course provides a foundation in the technologies and media relevant to the digital media sector. The course runs full-time over a twelve-month period. Formal teaching is divided into two twelve-week semesters.

Each student selects and commences a research project, which must be submitted in the form of a dissertation of 12,000 words by mid March. Students will also complete a final project, which can be a collaborative development with a number of students from the class . There is significant emphasis on theory rather than on media or software applications. A special laboratory is provided for the class where students can become familiar with software applications.

The course aims to meet the needs of 21st century learners, teachers, instructors and researchers in the context of the emerging Knowledge Society, by providing its students with the opportunity to participate in a research led Masters programme exploring the integration of learning and technology. The focus for the students is on technology mediated transformative learning experiences. The course addresses areas such as creativity, critical reflection, collaboration and meta-cognition through the active design, construction, use and evaluation of a range of learning technologies. Course learning activities and themes are research led and are closely aligned with the ongoing research activities of the Centre for Research in IT in Education.

This degree was launched in 1999 with the aim of producing a cohort of people who would be able to play a leadership role in the development and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in all aspects of learning. To date graduates have been equally divided between those working in the formal educational system, teachers or lecturers, and those involved in a variety of roles in the workplace ranging from instructional designers to training.

On the educational side, graduates of the course gain a deep understanding of the theories of learning that are relevant to the use of ICT and will have a realistic view of the real enhancements to learning that ICT can facilitate. On the technical side, graduates of the course gain a good knowledge of the principles of web design, multimedia authoring, digital video and computer operation. Although aspects of computer programming are by necessity touched upon it is not an aim of the degree to produce people who can program. In the second year of the course students carry out a substantial piece of research which typically involves the design, implementation and evaluation of a learning experience in which ICT plays a key role.

The course is run on a part-time basis. In the first year there are formal classes on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The second year is devoted to the completion of a research dissertation.
