Overview

Typically, a MSc takes two years to complete (three years if taken part-time); at the end of the first year the student may have the option to transfer to the PhD register if they so wish subject to satisfactory progress.

The aim of the Structured MSc in Computer Science is to provide the student with an opportunity to carry out a significant body of research work with support from the teaching component of the programme. The programme will offer academic subjects to enhance their knowledge as well as transferable and generic skills that will add significantly to the MSc experience by broadening the skill base of the candidate.

The first step is to identify a potential supervisor. This involves deciding on a general research area that you are interested in and to contact a member of the department’s staff that is working in that area. The best approach is to look through the staff web pages and the list of Research Groups/Projects in the department.

Research postgraduates are typically (though not exclusively) funded during their research. Support varies depending on the source, but at best, funding can include payment of fees, a salary and travel expenses. Note that all funding programmes are highly competitive, and most are contingent on the applicant securing high marks in their primary degree.

Potential MSc students should decide on a general research area that they’re interested in, and then contact a member of the department’s staff that’s working in that area. On completing an MSc in Computer Science the graduate has a number of options open to them. They can continue to build their career as a researcher in academia or pursue a career in the technology industry.

Other possibilities include working in scientific research administration or a hightech start-up environment. The experience and discipline gained from completing an MSc in Computer Science also can open other avenues outside of Computer Science where these skills are prized.

The MSc in Computer Science (Applied) offers students with degrees that include three years of Computer Science a personalised programme of advanced CS modules to enhance their knowledge and fit their strengths. Furthermore, students deepen their research and practical skills through a project and dissertation plus an industrial work placement meaning they will get the opportunity to apply the skills from the lecture hall and the research laboratory in a real industrial environment. This will be a key part of their training and enhance their employment prospects following their graduation.

Course Structure

The course lasts two years. In year one, students will do 12 taught modules selected to complement their previous experience and knowledge. In year 2, semester 1 consists of an advanced module in programming plus a choice of optional modules. In addition, student undertake a major individual software project and preparation for work placement. In semester 2, students are placed within software companies to gain at least six months of relevant work experience.

Graduates of the MSc in Computer Science (Applied) will be well placed to obtain positions in the software industry as programmers, designers and developers. In addition they will have an all-round qualification in computer science that makes them eligible for a wide range of computer-related positions.

2. Programme objectives & purpose

This is an advanced programme that provides Computing graduates with advanced knowledge and skills in the emerging growth area of Data Analytics. It includes advanced topics such as Large-Scale Data Analytics, Information Retrieval, Advanced Topics in Machine Learning and Data Mining, Natural Language Processing, Data Visualisation and Web-Mining. It also includes foundational modules in topics such as Statistics, Regression Analysis and Programming for Data Analytics. Students on the programme further deepen their knowledge of Data Analytics by working on a project either in conjunction with a research group or with an industry partner.

Graduates will be excellently qualified to pursue careers in national and multinational industries in a wide range of areas. The Master of Science in Software Engineering degree at Maynooth University exposes graduates in Computer Science and related disciplines to the many facets of this complex area – the technical, the methodological, the organizational – so that successful participants will subsequently be able to lead major projects in software engineering in many industrial and commercial sectors.

Course Structure

Each module is delivered as a series of intensive lectures. Each module also has associated practical work. Topics include software testing, software process, object-orientated programming, internet solutions, etc.

Participants submit a dissertation based on a Software Engineering topic. They also complete a work placement in industry (normally with a salary) organised by the University Placement Office.

Course Duration: 2 years overall (1 year full-time taught modules. 6 months dissertation. 6 months work placement)

Career Options

Students are qualified for many jobs in the software industry. Many students gain full-time employment with the company who sponsor their work placement. Past graduates in the Masters programme have been accepted for membership of the IEI. Associate membership (AIEI) has been granted to those graduates with less than 2 years work experience, with Ordinary membership (MIEI) granted after a minimum of 2 full years work experience.

Students who pass each of the taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be conferred with a Postgraduate Diploma in Data Science and Analytics.

This programme aims to prepare students to manage, analyse and interpret large heterogeneous data sources. Graduates will design, compare and select appropriate data analytic techniques, using software tools for data storage/management and analysis, machine learning, as well as probabilistic and statistical methods. The Masters in Digital Humanities at Maynooth University is designed as an introduction to this new and dynamic research area for students from across the disciplines. Course Structure

90 ECTS are needed to complete the Masters. The course is comprised of the following elements:

- Required Taught Modules: 20 ECTS*

- Project and Dissertation: 30 ECTS

Elective Taught Modules: 40 ECTS

*This does not include the 10 ECTS allocated to Structured Programming which runs in late August through to early September each year before classes begin and is highly recommended for students who do not have substantial technical experience. If Structured Programming is not taken, another technology module is substituted

Required modules include Digital Humanities Theory and Practice and Digital Humanities Practicum. Both modules are integral to the building of practical and theoretical knowledge of the discipline, its development and its intersection with public projects. The Digital Humanities Practicum module guarantees students a work placement at a cultural institution or DH project.

Available electives include modules from across Media Studies and Computer Science ensuring that students build their digital skills to prepare them for the planning, building and implementing of DH projects and for the close analysis of data within the context of the arts and humanities.

The course is delivered in our state of the art facility in An Foras Feasa through face-to-face teaching and blended learning. It runs over one year for full time students and two years for part-time students. Assessment includes a substantial element of continuous assessment. A thesis, submitted in August at the end of the course, can include a significant practical element or may focus on Digital Humanities theory.

Overview

Maynooth University (MU) in Ireland; the University of St. Andrews (UStA) in Scotland; and Université de Lorraine (UL) in France are offering a two-year Master Programme in Dependable Software Systems (DESEM).

Our objective is to provide students with the knowledge, skill and in-depth technical understanding of the key concepts required to design and build dependable software systems. This will be achieved by bringing together the theory and practice of software development and, in particular, through the transfer of knowledge from the classroom via research driven and commercially relevant projects.

The double-degree will be achieved over two years, through the allocation of 120 ECTS. Students will study in two of the three partner universities, achieving a diploma supplement from each university in which they accomplish 60 ECTS.

Courses are taught in English and are structured according to the ECTS. Students will be integrated into the culture of the country where they study through language and cultural courses provided by the Universities which they attend.

Course Structure

A student will achieve the European Double MSc in Dependable Software Systems, through studying at two European universities, providing them with the unique opportunity of specialising in two of the following subject areas:

· Rigorous Software Development at Maynooth University in Ireland

· Knowledge based Systems, Distributed Systems, or Software Systems at University of St. Andrews in Scotland

· Formal Reasoning at Université de Lorraine in France

To complete the degree a student must achieve 120 ECTS (60 ECTS at each university) over two years. These ECTS must include 40 ECTS from taught modules and 20 ECTS from project work in each year. Graduates are qualified to work in a wide range of jobs in the software industry. This structured research programme in Geocomputation aims to:
• Build capacity for independent research.
• Enhance advanced specialist knowledge in Geocomputation alongside transferable and generic skills.
• Enable students to disseminate their research.

In addition to the modules associated with this particular course, this structured programme offers postgraduate researchers the opportunity to select from modules taught on the MSc in Geocomputation and professional skills training modules offered by different faculties or modules offered by other Departments which are of particular interest, for example research commercialisation.

Students must take a minimum of 10 credits in taught modules (at least 5 in generic/transferable modules and at least 5 in subject specific/advanced specialist modules) from the Structured PhD programme.


There is an international shortage of highly skilled researchers able to handle large and complex datasets. Thus far our graduates have continued with research in academic environments but there are opportunities in public and private sector research and development, with environmental concerns and policy organisations: much depends on the substantive area of the thesis topic. This might focus on the innovative collection and processing of new datasets, on visualising complex datasets in multiple dimensions, on machine learning or on algorithms for the spatial analysis of data in a particular application area, for example health and retailing.

The Higher Diploma in Science (Software Development) is a one-year programme for graduates with degrees in ANY subject giving them a practical introduction to software development including programming, software design and testing, team project work. It is designed to give students practical skills for use in the software industry as programmers, software designers and testers and to bring students to the standard for industrial accreditation as programmers.

Teaching and learning will be through lectures, practical lab sessions, and directed reading as required for the different subjects. Module delivery is not just a scheduled series of topics, but rather balanced to meet the needs and progression rates of the students. The course places a balance between learning the fundamentals of the subject, and applying them in practice.

Assessment is handled in a similar manner, with most modules having a combination of practical assessment during the delivery of the module, and an examination at the end of the semester. Typically module material is also made available through eLearning tools (primarily Moodle) allowing students to revise at their own pace. Additional tutorials are used, where required, to assist students who may have problems with particular aspects of a module.

The course is designed to give students practical skills for use in the software industry as programmers, software designers and testers and to bring students to the standard for industrial accreditation as programmers.

The cross disciplinary collaboratioin between the Kemmy Business School and the Faculty of Science & Engineering will leverage the expertise in both computing and entrepreneurship disciplines to ensure students obtrain a more enrished and holistic industry ready educational experience. Students will attend modules which are core to the topics of Software Engineering and Entrepreneurship, and will then be given options to take electives from both streams. A key emphasis in the delivery of the entrepreneurship and innovation modules is on action and experiential learning which includes a combination of interactive presentations, case studies, team work, individual assignments and entrepreneurship and small business-related projects which stimulate innovative thinking and more effectively develop participants' entrepreneurial potential. The focus for students taking the MSc in Software Engineering and Entrepreneurship will be on Software Engineering problems.

Innovative teaching techniques may be used such as Problem-Based Learning and Case Study development. Additionally, students will attend Research SEminars which will give insight into current Software Engineering Research.
