Overview

This is a one year full time programme designed for honours graduates who may not have taken major accounting specialisms in their undergraduate studies, but who wish to pursue a professional accounting qualification. The programme modules are being designed so as to mirror in terms of standard and complexity the syllabi of the CAP 1 examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. One of the principal objectives of the programme is that graduates will, on successful completion of the programme, have entitlement to CAP 1 exemptions and equivalent exemptions from other professional accountancy bodies. Course co-ordinators will work closely with the professional accountancy bodies to ensure that the content and direction of all course modules also help prepare students for the final stages of the professional accounting examinations.

Course Structure

On completion of the programme graduates will be able to:
- Understand the principles of financial accounting and the main business and accounting structures
- Understand and be able to apply the principles of double entry book–keeping

This is a one year full-time programme. The course provides an accelerated route to the equivalent of an honours degree in Economics. A performance of 60% or better in the diploma guarantees a place on our Master’s programmes.

Course Structure

The programme covers Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and a range of applied courses such as Labour Economics, International Trade, Economics of Sport and Finance.

Students take five compulsory modules and seven optional modules. All modules are 5 credits each. The compulsory modules are the same every year.

The optional modules taken vary greatly, depending on the background and interest of the individual student. Students discuss which modules would be best for them with the course co-ordinator at the start of the year, and are helped to devise the optimal programme of study for themselves.

The list of modules available varies slightly from year to year. Students who wish to take a module from another department may do so, subject to the permission of that department. Not all combinations of modules may be available, due to timetable considerations.
