Inverness is a small city in the Scottish Highlands, on the country’s north-east coast. Situated close to Loch Ness, Inverness is known as the Capital of the Highlands – it’s the region’s largest settlement and its a cultural and economic centre. The University of the Highlands and Islands has an executive office in Inverness, as well as campuses across Scotland.
The area around Inverness has been inhabited for thousands of years, although it didn’t become a chartered town until the 12th century. The Middle Ages were rather violent and eventful for Inverness, which was the site of several bloody clashes and sieges. Later on, in 1746, the Battle of Culloden took place nearby, involving the slaughter of around 2,000 Jacobites – the final pitched battle to take place in Britain.
Thankfully, modern-day Inverness is a peaceful and friendly city that combines urban amenities with easy access to stunning countryside. Loch Ness is only 20 minutes away by car, so you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Nessie (or a seal) in the UK’s largest freshwater lake by volume. As the most northernmost city in the UK, Inverness enjoys much longer summer days than the rest of the country, comparable to parts of Scandinavia.
Venturing south-east of Inverness, you can reach the Cairngorms National Park in around 40 minutes. This is the UK’s largest national park, encompassing 4,528 square kilometres and many mountainous peaks (including Ben Macdui, the second highest in the UK).
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery explores the culture and history of the Highlands, with exhibits on geology, archaeology and much more. Meanwhile, the Inverness Botanic Gardens and its tropical house offers a welcome respite from the chilly Inverness winters.
On-campus student accommodation is available in Inverness, as are private lets across the city.
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) is a unique institution that offers both further and higher education programmes, with 13 independent colleges and research centres located around the region. Many of its postgraduate courses are online, although others can be studied on campus.
UHI’s executive office is based in Inverness. Inverness College UHI is one of the largest constituent institutions of the UHI system, with around 6,500 students.
Inverness has a vibrant, modern economy and is a major hub for life sciences. LifeScan Scotland is based in Inverness, which is also home to the Centre for Health Science. Tourism also plays an important role in the city and the surrounding area.
