UBFC - Graduate School EIPHI

The University of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté provides an international integrated MSc/PhD program called EIPHI standing for “Engineering and Innovation through Physical Sciences, High-technologies, and cross-dIsciplinary research”. The outstanding students in this graduate school will acquire a solid background in various topics, ranging from fundamental to applied sciences, allowing them to build a successful career in R&D sectors.

The Graduate School is founded on seven top ranking international research laboratories, FEMTO-ST, ICB, IMB, UTINAM, ICMUB, IMVIA and LMB. The program is designed to include hands-on laboratory experience during the Master years in order to strengthen the student’s capability to learn actively, think independently, and work in team. Through the existing close ties to industry, the students will also be exposed to the latest developments in industrial R&D through courses given by industrial partners and internships.

EIPHI proposes five research domains in sciences to students and aims at promoting:

  • Mind opening as required in any scientific or technological innovations in our modern world, through access to the latest scientific knowledge, and through several travel opportunities within a broad international academic network;
  • Inter-disciplinary abilities for answering to the challenges of transversal and complex projects of your future professional activities;
  • A strong complementary training in both theory and applications, through immersion in world class academic research groups, access to several high-tech academic platforms, and connections with several technology-based industries;

All EIPHI master program are taught in English and provide courses in both disciplinary and crossdisciplinary knowledge as well as broad digital, societal, cultural, environmental, and entrepreneurial skills.

An individual supervision all along the curriculum will be offered to EIPHI students, combining:

  • a personal project/thesis advisor in close connection with a specific research group
    and
  • a mentor, integrating you in his professional industrial or research network.

The five domain of training and research are :

  1. Physics, Mathematics and Applications
    The program aims to train students in fundamental, both theoretical and experimental, physics and in mathematics for physics providing knowledge and lab expertise in photonics, non-linear physics, time & frequency metrology, micro/nano- and quantum technologies.
  2. Energy
    The program is focused on the integration of thermal, electrical and hydrogen-based systems in stationary and transportation applications, with the final aims of increased efficiency and of sustainable development. The students are strongly involved in experimental activities thanks to two unique platforms: FCLAB and EcoCampus. The program is organized in parallel with a joint degree with UFC and the final year of the engineering school UTBM.
  3. Computer Science
    The program is dedicated to research aspects of network applications (web, distributed, mobile, the Internet of Things) and Artificial Intelligence.
  4. EIPHI program in Smart Systems and Structures
    Smart Systems and Structures merges four domains of studies namely:
    • Electronics
    • Mechanics
    • Control
    • Robotics
    It is aimed to develop the smart systems and structures of the future.
  5. Material Science
    Material science merges several domains of studies such as:
    • Chemistry of materials
    • Molecular chemistry
    • Physical Chemistry
    • Inorganic chemistry
