The Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development is an academic unit of the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Leeds. For over 30 years, the Centre has been a major international resource for education, research and technical assistance in health and development.
We have a strong pro-equity base and our mission is to develop the capacity of health systems in lower-income countries, particularly in the public sector. Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS) is dedicated to understanding the physical and chemical processes that govern the behaviour of Earth's atmosphere. Atmospheric processes are investigated using numerical models and field and laboratory experiments from the Earth's surface to the stratosphere.
Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics (IGT) is dedicated to understanding the structure and evolution of the Earth and neighbouring planets. Detection and measurement of resources in the crustal layer and understanding of geological hazard; measurement of gravity, magnetism, seismic waves and electrical properties, theoretical and computer modelling, and surface structural mapping.
Institute of Earth Surface Science Institute (ESSI) researches the physical, biological and geochemical processes to understand controls on the modern environment (both land and sea) and how man is affecting that system.
The School of Food Science and Nutrition has always been a leader in the teaching of food science. It has built up a reputation over more than forty years as one of the world's leading institutions at which to study this subject.
In the RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) no similar school in the UK can match our performance over 3 cycles of review. We continue to collaborate with major food producers and other academic institutions - a sign of both the high quality research we undertake, and the relevance of our degrees for the needs of today's food industry.

Ranked in the top six geography departments in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and awarded an 'Excellent' grading by HEFCE for the quality of our teaching, we disseminate cutting edge knowledge and research on topics as diverse as tropical ecology, social inclusion and city futures. The School of Healthcare is a large multidisciplinary school within the Faculty of Medicine and Health and one of the largest in the UK. We are in the top five for Nursing and Audiological Studies in the Independent Complete University guide, and first for Social Work in the Guardian league tables.
The School of Healthcare takes pride in being at the forefront of advancing the healthcare agenda, driving positive change and developments in healthcare policy, practice, research and education. We have a broad ranging team of highly trained staff and award winning researchers contributing to the professional areas of Audiology, Cardiology, Counselling, Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Radiography and Social Work
The school offers courses of study at undergraduate and continuing professional development and post graduate study. This incorporates programmes with professional registration, as well as multi professional programmes for qualified staff. Research degrees including MPhil and PhD are offered.
The nursing staff within the school work closely with NHS colleagues to provide education and research to enhance practice. The Academic and Clinical Unit for Musculoskeletal Nursing (ACUMeN) is a joint unit between the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust and the University which aims to integrate education and research with practice. The Palium Group is a collaboration between the School and clinicians at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and St Gemma's Hospice, Leeds.
The School of Mathematics warmly welcomes applications for postgraduate study. We take pride in the calibre of our staff, in the breadth of our postgraduate programmes, and in the successes of our postgraduates as they develop their careers within a stimulating and supportive academic environment.
The School comprises four departments: Applied Mathematucs, Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Financial Mathematics. Together they form one of the largest research school of mathematicians in the UK, with around 73 academic staff, 72 research PhD students and 32 taught MSc students. The Mathematics building lies at the centre of one of the UK's major university campuses, where we work together in developing the healthy, interactive research atmosphere which feeds and influences our undergraduate and MSc teaching programmes.
The School of Mathematics has a strong research track record – we were placed in the top ten mathematics departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) for research power, a measure which combines both the quality and volume of research, helping the University of Leeds to 14th place for research quality.
