The Department for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.
In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.
The Dept’s aims are:
To develop a research portfolio that is both of the highest academic standard and has applications in the real world
To build on external links with the public services and other bodies concerned with health and society
To innovate design and delivery of healthcare services
To change corporate approaches to healthy organisations
To support government reform of health and social care provision
To identify and facilitate opportunities for academic collaboration and new developments.
The Dept's postgraduate taught programmes combine academic excellence with flexible and innovative design and delivery; our postgraduate portfolio is distinguished by the provision of a number of Professional Masters and a Professional Doctorate programme designed to be studied part-time by learners working in a wide range of healthcare roles from all around the world. All our postgraduate courses are taught online and this has proved to be one of our unique selling points, with students able to continue within their practice area or working environment whilst gaining a further qualification.
The Dept is renowned for its exemplary attention to educational design, integrating knowledge with research evidence and resulting in programmes which are highly relevant to contemporary practice; in addition, the Dept boasts some of the most innovative and successful approaches to online and part-time education, recognised through a number of awards.
At all levels, learning and teaching in the Dept provides a strong focus on high quality education for real world situations and produces graduates with skills and knowledge relevant to professional roles and in high demand from employers.

The Dept has an established research training skills programme for all research students. The taught programmes enable students to extend their health and social care career pathways and to build important networks for further professional opportunities.
Welcome to our joint Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering. We are at the forefront of teaching, research and consultancy in the field of the modern built environment. Whether you are looking for architecture and civil engineering education in our renowned Department, research opportunities in the built environment or merely a glimpse into our philosophy, we hope your visit to our web pages is successful.
The Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering can trace its uniquely joint nature back to 1965, when Ken Panter and Howard Hufford introduced the ethos that if architects and civil engineers are to work together, they should be educated together. In 1976, when Sir Ted Happold moved to Bath to set up Buro Happold, he became Professor of Building Engineering in the Department, and with the new Professor of Architecture, Michael Brawne, the Department embarked on its provision of internationally-leading teaching and research in the built environment. Since those early days, the Department has seen extraordinary growth in student and staff numbers. The Department now has nearly 600 undergraduate students, about 100 MSc students, over 50 research students and staff, and around 35 teaching and research academics to lead all activity.
The Department draws on various strengths in achieving its educational aims, namely being part of the research-intensive University of Bath, its location in a World Heritage City, its exceptional links with industry and its reputation for producing holistically-thinking graduates who are able to lead projects. Sustainability within the built environment is core to our teaching and research, and this is reflected strongly across our Degree Programmes and Research Centres. We are immensely proud of our reputation and our enthusiasm for holistic design of infrastructure is encapsulated in everything we represent.
Developing strong Departments of Chemical Engineering in UK Universities is essential for the health and prosperity of business and industry. Bath is in the forefront of this drive with its strong multidisciplinary research base and highly reputable undergraduate and MSc degree programmes.
The Department is friendly and close-knit, and specialist research groups frequently work together and exchange ideas and information. The proximity of other Departments on campus facilitates collaborative research, and multi-disciplinary initiatives have evolved naturally over the years.
Our research activities are grouped broadly into three main areas: Catalysis and Reaction Engineering, Biochemical and Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Materials & Porous Solids. Most of our projects within these groups tackle complex problems underpinning Sustainable Development, Clean Technologies, Green Chemistry and developments in Health and Medicine.
Our new state-of-the-art research facilities are housed in a purpose-built building, opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on the 8th of March 2002. Research projects in the Department are funded from various sources, including industry, European Union, Charities, UK Research Councils and Government.
We actively promote translation of our research into our undergraduate teaching, with all students in the 3rd year of MEng degree programmes undertaking a 3-month full-time individual research project. More substantial research projects are undertaken by students on taught MSc programmes. Such short projects on MEng and MSc programmes are ideal for testing novel ideas and solving well-structured problems. Some of these projects are undertaken in collaboration with industry.
The Department of Education is a thriving academic community with a strong national and international reputation for research. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2000), we once again maintained our Grade 5 status in recognition of the quality of the research carried out by our staff.
Postgraduate taught provision ranges from teacher training programmes at both Honours and Masters levels to high quality Masters courses, aimed at qualified and experienced teachers, lecturers, trainers, educational managers and administrators who wish to engage in advanced study in education; we offer specialisms as diverse as educational leadership and management, environmental education, international education, sports coaching. Alternatives include the MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and new for 2008, an MA in Coach Education and Sports Development.
If you are interested in developing your research methodologies and refining your ideas before embarking on either an MPhil/PhD or a Professional Doctorate (EdD) with us, we offer a Master of research (MRes) programme as a stepping stone.
The Department prides itself upon the quality of its teaching and provision for students and this was officially recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) which in a recent external inspection awarded the Department an 'excellent' score of 23/24.
We host approximately 40 academic and research staff and over 100 students on doctoral programmes (MRes, MPhil, PhD, EdD) studying full-time and part-time both here on campus and throughout the world.
Electronic and Electrical Engineering
MSc in Digital Communications MSc in Wireless Systems
MSc in Mechatronics
MSc in Electrical Power Systems
MSc in Electrical Power Systems by Distance Learning
The Department is in the vanguard of progress in a fast-moving discipline and its Postgraduate School is one of the largest in the University with over 150 students divided between research work, several full-time MSc programmes and a unique Distance Learning Modular MSc programme.
The Department has very strong links with British Industry, Europe and Overseas Institutions. Its internationally renowned expertise in many areas is strongly reflected in substantial levels of research income and journal publications, and it offers outstanding opportunities in postgraduate research.
The postgraduate laboratories are wellequipped with state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation. Postgraduate facilities include PCs/powerful workstations which also give direct and ready access to the University's central computer system and worldwide web, in addition to realtime digital simulation facilities at the cutting edge of technology.
At postgraduate level, six established taught MA programmes exemplify the Department’s traditional excellence and commitment to innovation, while a seventh in International Security commenced in September 2009.
The Department owes much of its early reputation to the success of the highly-regarded MA in Interpreting and Translating, which in its earliest form was established more than thirty years ago and has provided (and continues to provide) many of the professional linguists working in major European and international institutions. The addition in recent years of Chinese and Japanese streams has further enhanced the programme’s reputation and appeal. It was complemented in 2003 by the MA in Translation and Professional Language Skills.
The popular and highly original Euromasters programme, which focuses on in-depth study of European Politics, Policy and Society, is coordinated in Bath and taught collaboratively with universities in Berlin, Madrid, Paris, Prague and Siena. Offering the opportunity to study in a fully integrated European environment, the Euromasters programme in September 2009 will move to a two-year schedule. The programme is complemented by Euromasters with Trans-Atlantic Track, offering an integrated period of study in the USA.
Two successful Bath-only taught politics MA programmes, the MA in Contemporary European Politics (MACEP) and the MA in international Politics (MAIP) will be complemented by the new MA in international Security (MAIS) from 2009 onwards (subject to final approval).
Since 2001, the MA in European Cinema Studies makes an important and innovative contribution to the Department’s taught postgraduate programmes, focusing on the specificities of European (as opposed to strictly national) cinema and combining both theoretical and practical stances.
Serving the University community as a whole, the English Language Centre provides language services for the international student population, as well as a variety of specialised courses. The Foreign Languages Centre provides courses in a wide range of languages at all levels for students throughout the University who wish to complement their own degree programmes with proficiency in a foreign language. This opportunity also exists, of course, for students in our own Department who wish to gain or maintain proficiency in a language other than those they are studying as part of their degree.
The rapidly expanding Department of Psychology has a distinctive research profile and a cutting edge approach to theory, methodology and application. We came into formal existence in 1997 when the University was re-organised into faculties (prior to that we had a flourishing undergraduate and postgraduate programme within the School of Social Sciences). Psychology is currently part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Our Master in Research is part of a faculty-wide programme, with core units and departmental specialisms and we currently have 30 students undertaking postgraduate research (MPhil/PhD).
All academic staff in the Department are actively engaged in research and publication. We have a strong tradition of interdisciplinary work and collaborate with other departments in the University of Bath, local and national institutions, and international networks. Seventeen academic staff are augmented by staff in our research units and centres, and by several Visiting Fellows.
In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), over half our staff were affiliated with research areas ranked in the top five across the country, namely Management, Pharmacy and Social Policy. Other staff were linked to Biology, Computer Science and Education, all of which performed well.
