Glasgow Caledonian University - The University for the Common Good

Glasgow Caledonian University

Glasgow Caledonian University is a vibrant multi-cultural modern university in the centre of Glasgow. Our welcoming community of 20,000 students from more than 100 countries enjoys a wide range of award-winning support services and state of the art facilities. Combined with our commitment to the Common Good, platinum-award winning eco-friendly campus (Ecocampus, 2015) and wide range of accreditations and industry links, it is no surprise that 97% of GCU graduates are in employment or further study within 6 months of graduation (HESA 2017). As the first Changemaker Campus in Scotland (Ashoka U, 2015), GCU is also a leader in widening access and is ranked 1st for research power in Scotland within modern universities (REF, 2014).

GCU is home to four prestigious academic schools. Our School of Engineering and Built Environment is one of the leading schools for programmes in building and surveying in the UK. The school also carries out extensive research in partnership with industry, commerce and other academic institutions in the UK and overseas. The Glasgow School for Business and Society integrates the areas of business, law and social sciences to ensure that they are well placed to meet the needs of business and society. The School has an international outlook and is committed to developing partnerships across the world. Our School of Health and Life Sciences is committed to the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and knowledge transfer across the disciplines of health, nursing and social care, biological and biomedical sciences, psychology and vision sciences. Lastly, our fourth school, focusing on a suite of professional postgraduate courses, is GCU London, which is located in an ultra-modern environment in the heart of Spitalfields, one of London’s most attractive locations. The School regularly hosts master classes with industry leaders, having established a vast network of experienced thought leaders.

The University for the Common Good

As the University for the Common Good, GCU provides students with the confidence, knowledge and skills to contribute to solving global challenges, such as climate change, poverty, social injustice and health inequalities. Our students benefit from the strong working relationships we have established with thought leaders including Dr Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and founder of the Mary Robinson Foundation for Climate Justice. Our other honorary graduates include Kofi Annan, who served as the 7th Secretary- General of the United Nations, Lily Cole, actress and social entrepreneur, and Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, to name but a few.

A growing number of GCU students travel the world to deliver projects that have a real impact on a range of communities, many of them supported by university scholarships and awards.

Voted the world’s friendliest city (Rough Guides, 2016), Glasgow is consistently named as a top destination. It is a UNESCO City of Music, part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and in the world top ten SportBusiness Ultimate Sports Cities. Glasgow is geared towards its student population – with over 64,000 students in higher education (almost 11% of the city’s population), you’ll enjoy a warm welcome and a great experience. Despite being Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow is compact and simple to navigate and explore, particularly from GCU’s city centre campus. It has excellent transport options and links further afield too, with easy access to three international airports, two mainline rail stations and a national bus station.
