Chemical Engineering at Strathclyde was rated the best in Scotland in the last Scottish Higher Education Funding Council Teaching Quality Assessment and is amongst the best in the UK and we are amongst the few departments in the UK to offer Institution of Chemical Engineers accredited courses at BEng, MEng and post graduate MSc level.
Civil Engineering has been taught at the University of Strathclyde since 1887 and is one of the oldest courses in the United Kingdom. The Department is currently ranked in the Top 200 Universities in the World (QS WUR by Subject, 2013).
Our multidisciplinary Department has a large international student population and a global research profile, with almost two-thirds of our research output rated as ‘world-leading or internationally excellent’ in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008).
All our courses are accredited by professional bodies: the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers.

The Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) is an internationally leading department delivering multi-disciplinary learning which is both innovative and industry focused within the Faculty of Engineering; one of the best equipped engineering faculties in the UK and the largest in Scotland. We have a portfolio of courses across our design, manufacture and engineering management themes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, along with a number of research opportunities. We are the only department in the UK combining end-to end multidisciplinary expertise which ensures our students are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to embark on a successful career. For those already working professionally, we have a range of continuing professional development courses in order for you to maintain and develop your skills to keep up to date with a fast-moving industry.
Our department is well equipped with state-of-the-art tools to help design, prototype, manufacture and perform research on a broad range of items. Our skills and equipment are utilised on a number of student, commercial and research projects. We have various workshops to assist us in this work, which include Rapid Prototyping, Virtual Prototyping, Reverse Engineering and Mechatronics labs.
We have one of the UK’s only digital design suites to combine virtual and physical design and prototyping.
The department itself was refurbished in 2014 and offers modern teaching, studying and research facilities featuring a broad range of IT facilities, group study areas and studio space.

Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management students enjoy broad based education with the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from different departments across the Faculty of Engineering and the University, as well as with our industry partners and international partners.
The Department has an international reputation for teaching and research excellence across the broad spectrum of electronic and electrical engineering. Considered one of the premier departments of our kind, our expertise spans electrical power engineering & renewable energy, telecommunications & signal processing, ultrasonics, microsystems, photonics, and control systems. Research activities are driven by six strategically focused groups, which reflect the Department’s scale, diversity and vision, and underpin its teaching programmes. The latest UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) affirmed our status for “world-leading and internationally excellent” research, rating us top in Scotland – by a long way – and 3rd in the UK.
Research-led, we are recognised for innovation in electronic & electrical engineering education and are home to several unique and internationally-leading facilities. These include Europe’s first research centre dedicated to the development of ‘smart’ technologies, Europe’s only GSE Power Station Control Room Simulator, and the UK’s only Wind Energy Systems Doctoral Training Centre. Our strong partnerships with government, industry and a variety of global research agencies have resulted in a large scholarship programme, an outstanding record of entrepreneurship and the commercial adoption of our research results and innovations across key industrial sectors. Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Strathclyde is one of the largest departments of its type in the UK, with around 500 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate students. It has around 100 academic, research, administrative and technical staff. It is by far the largest of its type in Scotland. It has the highest independently assessed standing in its discipline in Scotland for both teaching and research.
The Psychology Department was established when the University of Strathclyde received its Charter in 1964, and is situated in the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences.
The staff of the department include 20 full-time members of academic staff, 11 research staff, two computing officers, and a Departmental Administrator, as well as 2 technical and 5 secretarial staff.
The department is situated in refurbished premises on the 5th and 6th floors of the Graham Hills Building on the John Anderson Campus in Glasgow City Centre. Accommodation includes several new laboratories, seminar rooms and a common room. All postgraduates have some office/lab space. Research facilities include observation rooms equipped with one-way vision screens, cubicles linked by audio-visual communication systems, light-proof and sound-proof laboratories, and a neuropsychological lab. Students have access to computers networked for statistical packages and a range of other software facilities.
Psychology is a popular subject in the B.A. Degree at Strathclyde, and because of the progressive speicalisation in the structure of this degree, we have over 675 students in first year, 140 in second year, 120 in third year and 72 fourth year honours students. Our postgraduate students include those doing the M.Sc Courses in Research Methods in Psychology, in Educational Psychology, in Occupational Psychology, and those doing Ph.Ds over the full range of psychology.
Departmental Research Areas:
The Department, which is recognised by the ESRC for training purposes, offers facilities for postgraduate study and research in a number of fields, focused on the following main areas:
Interactive Learning – Research in this area concerns the learning that occurs when individuals advance their knowledge or understanding through dialogue, either by working with each other, or interacting with a teacher, peer tutor or computer. The main objective is to specify the conditions which optimise learning under different circumstances and at different ages, the processes involved, and the implications for the design of instructional provision. Contexts in which this work has been conducted include: primary school science, road safety education, critical thinking skills amongst further education students, and the use of communication and information technology in higher education.
Developmental and Educational Psychology – The Department has a long-established tradition of research concerned with children’s development and education. Fields of expertise include: children’s language acquisition; language impairment; the development of perspective-taking and communicative skills; the role of parents in pre-school education; bullying and pro-social behaviour; children’s skills as witnesses; and conceptual knowledge in childhood and adolescence.
Road User Behaviour – The Department is recognised by the UK Government as a centre of excellence for its research on the perceptual, cognitive and social factors underlying child pedestrian accidents, the implications for intervention programmes, and the development of appropriate educational resources. As well as playing a lead role in national and international initiatives in this field, members of the Department are currently engaged in research on elderly drivers and pedestrians, and interactions between different groups of road user.
Applied Social Psychology – Members of this group undertake strategic and policy-oriented research into: the use and misuse of illicit drugs; problems of alcohol use in society; AIDS and other aspects of sexual health; suicide and attempted suicide; and human factors and safety issues. One large-scale project (CIRAS) investigates human error on the railways in a number of rail and rail infrastructure companies throughout the UK. Another project concerned with root cause coding in the nuclear industry has produced a system which is being trialled in ten nuclear plants.
Cognitive Neuropsychology – Much of the research conducted in this area focuses on the role of the frontal lobes in the regulation of behaviour and psychological function, including changes in functioning associated with depression, closed head injury and ageing. There is additional research on cholinergic and noradrenergic psychopharmacology, on perception, orientation and movement control, and on rehabilitation following brain injury.
The School of Government and Public Policy combines internationally acclaimed research in political science and public policy with excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Established in 2010, the School of Government and Public Policy integrates the Department of Government with three research centres - the European Policies Research Centre, the Centre for the Study of Public Policy and the Centre for Elections and Representation Studies.
The guiding ethos of the School is to develop research that is both academically excellent and of practical use. We focus on public policy, governance and representation - three areas where systematic insights are in great demand from policymakers and the wider public. The quality of our research is recognised internationally with, for example, the German Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) listing our School as part of an ‘Excellence Group’ in political science.
The School is an ideal place to study politics. Located on the University's city-centre campus, we offer an exciting range of Masters courses in research methods, public policy and international politics. In all successive National Student Surveys, our politics students have recorded an overall satisfaction of over 90 per cent. In the most recent survey, we were ranked top of the student satisfaction table in politics in Scotland and in the top ten for the UK.
The School of Humanities is a community of researchers, teachers, students, and support staff working together on some of the most interesting and exciting issues in historical and contemporary culture. Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses cover a wide range of areas, from the teaching of high-level skills in languages through advanced practical study in creative writing and journalism, to research-led courses at the cutting edge of their academic disciplines in the study of history, literature, language, and culture.

In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, 29% of our publications were graded at the highest level (4*) as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour. In the REF 2014 all 22 of our historians were submitted for assessment. This made us one of only eight institutions in Britain able to do this. The depth and breadth of our research culture ensures that all our staff are active investigators generating new knowledge that's often world-leading in their areas of expertise.

Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences is a leading centre for research and training focussed on the discovery, development and delivery of better medicines.

We offer an accredited 4 year MPharm degree as well as a range of undergraduate and integrated Masters courses in the Biomedical Sciences.
