What’s it like to study a Masters in Hull?

Kingston upon Hull was originally founded as a trading centre by monks associated with the historical Meaux Abbey. It continued to expand and became a major British whaling and passenger shipping port in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today the city continues to function as a commercial port, but is also an important site of investment in chemical and health science research.

Postgraduate students in Hull live and study in a vibrant city, situated in a particularly attractive part of the north of England. Hull is home to a range of landmarks and attractions, both historical and contemporary, ranging from the popular Hull Marina and The Deep (a large aquarium, built substantially underwater) to Wilberforce House, a Georgian building housing a museum dedicated to the life of its famous resident: the anti-slavery campaigner, William Wilberforce. In 2017, Hull was named the UK City of Culture, which gave its arts scene a huge boost and helped regenerate Hull’s waterfront and Old Town.

Beyond the city lies the opportunity to visit the picturesque north Yorkshire coast and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. There are also daily ferries to the Netherlands and Belgium that depart from Hull.

Universities in Hull

The largest university in Hull is the University of Hull, originally founded as a university college in 1927, but gaining full university status in 1954. One of the UK’s most popular poets, Philip Larkin, was the University of Hull’s librarian for 30 years. The university is usually ranked in or around the top 50 institutions nationally and, in addition to its local campus, also maintains a site in the seaside resort town of Scarborough (around 37 miles to the north of Hull itself).

Hull is also home to a campus of the University of Lincoln (formerly based in Hull) and the Hull York Medical School (established through a partnership between the University of Hull and the University of York).
