Programme Aims

This pre-registration nursing programme prepares Master entry-level Registered Nurses. The admitted students are Bachelor's degree holders in any discipline. The programme prepares students for registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as Registered Nurses and to acquire the attributes to become future leaders in the profession.

  1. To equip students for holistic care that encompasses safe, ethical, legal, culturally sensitive nursing therapeutics provided to clients of all ages and their families in various healthcare settings.
  2. To prepare students to acquire the attributes of future nurse leaders through appraisal and translation of new knowledge in advancing nursing practice.

Programme Characteristics

This is a collaborative programme of the School of Nursing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital.

  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the first university in Hong Kong to offer a pre-registration degree programme in nursing for graduates from other disciplines.
  • The School of Nursing at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital was established in 1927, it is the only private hospital in Hong Kong with a school offering a curriculum for registered nurses.
  • The motto of the School of Nursing (SN) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is "To Excel in Nursing for the Well-being of Mankind", whilst that of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital is "Quality in Service and Excellence in Care".
  • The collaboration of the two institutions ensures the quality preparation of future registered nurses and will raise the profile of the nursing profession in Hong Kong.
  • The programme combines basic preparation for professional qualification with advanced preparation to enable students to become competent reflective practitioners in the nursing profession.

Professional Recognition

The programme is accreditated by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (NCHK) and graduates are eligible to apply for registration as Registered Nurses general.

Programme Structure

This programme embraces all of the theoretical components required for registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong. These include the introductory and applied subjects, plus subjects on biology, social sciences, professional studies and humanities that develop students' broad understanding of the biological and psychosocial dimensions of the human condition and health care.

The structure runs from simple to complex, covering child and adult care, maternal care, mental health nursing, community nursing, gerontological nursing and nursing research. Students are required to complete a clinical research project in the final year to consolidate their knowledge in research in a clinical nursing focus. Supervised field practice is organized throughout the study to integrate theory into practice.

This programme provides participants with the opportunity to develop and expand knowledge, understanding and judgment in theoretical and practical disaster management and humanitarian action.

Programme Characteristics

  • Designed to equip students with advanced knowledge, and to continue their personal development in disaster risk management and humanitarianism;
  • Underpinned by a multidisciplinary approach that enables graduates to conduct theoretical and practical analysis, as well as evaluation to support disaster management and humanitarian action in global health contexts;
  • Conducted by experienced disaster teaching team members who are trainers for continuing education courses and postgraduate programmes in disaster management;
  • Collaborates with the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute at The University of Manchester, a leading global centre for the study of humanitarianism and international disaster management;
  • Provides students with hands-on field placement experience to support their future career development; and

This programme aims to offer experienced registered nurses the opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge, understanding and competencies for advanced practice roles.

Programme Characteristics

Registered nurses with Bachelor's degrees in nursing gain a clinical edge while studying at PolyU. Graduates are able to:

  • Become Advanced Practising Nurses;
  • Meet the demands of healthcare reform in Hong Kong;
  • Critically analyse and evaluate ongoing professional practices;
  • Establish innovative projects to facilitate preventive, curative, and rehabilitative client care; and
  • Choose a clinical option and/or a research dissertation.

This programme provides advanced theory, knowledge and clinical skills for rehabilitation professionals. It also prepares graduates to assume leadership positions in clinical research and professional practice, offering a flexible programme of study for both specialist training and professional training.

Aims

  • The aims of the programme are:
  • To equip the students with a broadened and deepened knowledge based and skills, and enable them to meet the changing clients’ needs and contribute to the development of occupational therapy practices; and
  • To equip the students with a lifelong ability to critically analyze and evaluate ongoing professional pactices so that the quality of practice can be ensured and enhanced.

Characteristics

This programme is designed in response to demand from members of occupational therapy profession to keep abreast of contemporary practices and issues. It aims to equip students with a range of advanced clinical and research skills. The main focus will be using modern clinical applications and research-driven teaching. Specific examples include innovative computer technology and psychometrics to enhance your specialisation in such areas as vocational, geriatric, cognitive, psychiatric and community rehabilitation. This programme does not confer eligibility for registration with the Occupational Therapists Board of Hong Kong.

Structure

  • The programme is operated in both full-time and part time mode and it takes a normal duration 1 year to complete in full-time mode or 2.5 years to complete in part-time mode.
  • Students must complete 2 Compulsory Subjects - Research Methods & Data Analysis and Project Study, 5 Core Subjects and 2 Elective Subjects.
