Hatfield is a town in the south of England, a short distance from the edge of the Greater London area. As well as being conveniently located for the capital's many important higher education institutions, there is also one local university in Hatfield, with around 25,000 students.
Though there has been a settlement at Hatfield since the Saxon period, the modern town expanded significantly during the twentieth century. This was partly the result of planned urban development in the region surrounding London and partly due to population growth following the establishment of various aerospace works in the region.
Aircraft manufacture became a significant component of the town's identity and is still celebrated in a number of local civic decorations and street names.
Postgraduate students in Hatfield live and study in a town that combines modern features deriving from twentieth-century planning with much older historical buildings and heritage sites. Despite its small size, the town features a range of galleries, museums and music venues.
Hatfield's local university, the University of Hertfordshire, was first founded in 1952 and became a university in 1992. It is usually ranked within the top 100 world universities under 50 years old and within the top 80 British universities.
The town's close proximity to London also makes it an excellent base from which to visit attractions in the national capital, or access its many prestigious universities.
